To renew a Delaware business license, sign into the state’s One Stop portal at onestop.delaware.gov before December 31, confirm your business details, and pay the renewal fee — $75 per location for most businesses. You can also renew by mailing back the paper renewal notice the Division of Revenue sends each year. Online renewal takes about ten minutes and lets you print a temporary license on the spot.
What to Have Ready
Pull these together before you log in:
- Your Delaware business license number, printed on your current license and visible inside your One Stop account.
- Your Federal Employer Identification Number. Sole proprietors without employees can use their Social Security Number instead.
- Your business activity code. Delaware categorizes businesses by activity, and each category has its own fee schedule set by Title 30, Chapter 23 of the Delaware Code.
- Your current physical and mailing addresses. If either has changed, update them during renewal, because the Division of Revenue uses this address for future tax notices.

Renewing Online
Two portals lead to the same renewal:
- Delaware One Stop at onestop.delaware.gov is the state’s recommended route. Sign into your existing account or create one, then follow the prompts.2Delaware One Stop. Renew Your Business Licenses in Delaware
- The Division of Revenue’s online renewal at tax.delaware.gov connects directly to Revenue’s system.3Delaware Division of Revenue. Business Licenses FAQs
Either portal walks you through the same steps: confirm your business details, verify your activity code, and choose a one-year or three-year term. The system calculates your total based on your business type and term length. At the final screen you’ll provide an electronic signature and pay through the state’s secure payment gateway.
Renewing by Mail
Before the December 31 expiration, the Division of Revenue mails a paper renewal notice to each licensed business. Complete the notice and mail it back with your fee.4Delaware One Stop. Frequently Asked Questions If yours never arrived or went to an old address, call the Division of Revenue’s Public Service Office at (302) 577-8200 to request a replacement.
Mail takes longer to process, and it doesn’t give you an instant temporary license, so most businesses are better off online.
What It Costs
The base annual fee for most Delaware business licenses is $75 per location.5Delaware Division of Revenue. Requirements for Delaware Businesses The exact amount depends on your business category — contractors, professional service providers, wholesalers, and retailers can pay different rates. A separate license is required for each distinct business activity, so a company running two different types of businesses at the same address pays two fees.
Delaware also offers an optional three-year renewal. You pay three times the annual fee upfront and stay valid through December 31 of the third year. There’s no discount, but it spares you two rounds of paperwork.6Justia. Delaware Code 30-2102 – Term of Licenses Add a new location or a separately licensable activity mid-cycle, and the fee is pro-rated to match your existing expiration date.
Lost or stolen license certificates can be replaced for the unexpired term by paying a $15 fee to the Department of Finance.6Justia. Delaware Code 30-2102 – Term of Licenses
Deadline and Penalties for Operating Without a Current License
Every Delaware business license issued under Title 30 expires on December 31.6Justia. Delaware Code 30-2102 – Term of Licenses You need to renew before that date to stay in continuous good standing. The Division of Revenue sends renewal notices in advance, but filing on time is your responsibility whether or not the notice arrives.
Operating past December 31 without renewing carries real consequences. Delaware law makes it illegal to carry on any business requiring a license without a current one. Anyone doing so is liable for the unpaid license fees and faces a fine of up to $3,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both.7Delaware Code Online. After You Submit
Renew online and you can print a temporary license on the last screen. Post it at your place of business until the permanent one arrives. Delaware law requires every licensed business to keep its license in a conspicuous place, and the temporary version satisfies that rule in the meantime.3Delaware Division of Revenue. Note: State License Is Not a Professional License
A Delaware business license from the Division of Revenue is not the same as a professional license from the Division of Professional Regulation. Most businesses that require professional credentials — contractors, engineers, cosmetologists, healthcare providers — need both to operate legally, on separate schedules and through separate processes.8Division of Professional Regulation. Applying for a Professional License Renewing one does not renew the other.
Contractors also fall under Title 30, Chapter 25, which imposes additional rules — the contractor license costs $75 and must be obtained before executing a contract, and for competitively bid contracts over $50,000 the application must be initiated before you submit the bid. Civil penalties for noncompliance run up to $10,000 per occurrence.9Delaware Code Online. Delaware Code Title 30 Chapter 25
