To renew your driver’s license in Chicago, watch for the renewal notice the Illinois Secretary of State mails about 90 days before your license expires, then either renew online if your notice says you qualify or book a “Skip the Line” appointment at a Driver Services facility. Standard Illinois licenses run on a four-year cycle, and the notice includes a PIN you’ll need for online renewal.1Illinois Secretary of State. Driver’s License/Identification Card Renewal Don’t let the date slip: driving on an expired license in Illinois is a criminal offense, and a lapse of more than a year can be charged as a Class B misdemeanor.2FindLaw. When Your License Expires and When the Notice Arrives
A standard Illinois driver’s license is valid for four years from the date it was issued.3FindLaw. Illinois Code 625 ILCS 5/6-118 – Fees Some drivers qualify for an eight-year license, but four years is what most Chicago residents will see on their card. The Secretary of State mails a renewal notice roughly 90 days before the expiration date printed on your license. That notice tells you whether you can renew remotely and provides the PIN required to do so.
If the notice doesn’t arrive, you can still renew. Check your address on file first; if you’ve moved, that’s the likely reason.
Can You Renew Online
Illinois’s remote option is called Safe Driver Renewal. Eligible drivers can complete the whole process by internet, mail, or phone with no facility visit and no tests.4Illinois General Assembly. Illinois Administrative Code 92-1030.25 – Safe Driver License Renewals and Remote Renewals To qualify, you need a clean driving record with no convictions, no accidents on file, and no license withdrawals. You must be between 21 and 78, and your license cannot have been expired for more than a year.
The rule that trips people up: your last two consecutive renewals can’t both have been remote. Illinois requires an in-person visit at least every third cycle to refresh your photo and run a vision screening. One remote renewal last time is fine; two in a row means you’re going in person this time.
Other disqualifiers include holding a commercial driver’s license, needing a medical or vision specialist report, holding a school bus driver permit, or being under 26 without having met Selective Service obligations. Drivers with traffic convictions can still renew online during cycles where a written test isn’t required, since that test is only mandated every other renewal for those with violations.
If your notice confirms eligibility, go to the Secretary of State’s online renewal portal, enter the PIN, and pay. It takes a few minutes.
What to Bring to an In-Person Renewal
The documents you need depend on what you’re renewing and whether anything on your card is changing. For a straightforward renewal of a current standard license, or a current REAL ID without changes, the requirement is lighter than most people expect: one item from Group A, which verifies a written signature. Acceptable Group A documents include your current Illinois driver’s license, a major credit or debit card, a Social Security card, or a current U.S. passport.5Illinois Secretary of State. Document Requirements to Obtain a Driver’s License/State ID Card
If you’re changing your address at a standard renewal, add one residency document. A REAL ID renewal with an address change requires two residency documents. A bank statement, utility bill, mortgage document, or insurance policy works, as long as each is dated within 90 days of your application.6Illinois General Assembly. Illinois Administrative Code 92-1030-Appendix D – Acceptable Identification Documents for Real ID
If your name has changed since your last renewal through marriage, divorce, or a court order, bring the legal document that proves it. A marriage certificate or court decree is enough. The facility will not process your renewal until the name on your paperwork matches the name you want on the card.
Adding a REAL ID While You’re There
Upgrading from a standard license to a REAL ID during renewal takes more paperwork. You need one item from each of four groups:
- Group A, written signature: a credit card, your current Illinois license, a Social Security card, or a U.S. passport.
- Group B, date of birth: a certified birth certificate, U.S. passport, naturalization certificate, or consular report of birth abroad.
- Group C, Social Security number: a Social Security card, W-2, pay stub showing your SSN, or SSA-1099. If your SSN was already verified through the state’s online system from a prior transaction, that may satisfy the requirement.
- Group D, residency: two documents showing your full residential address, such as utility bills, bank statements, or a lease, each dated within 90 days.
All documents must be originals or certified copies. One missing item means a return trip, so check twice before you leave the house.
Whether to bother with the upgrade comes down to how you fly. REAL ID enforcement at airport security began on May 7, 2025.7Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID An Illinois license without the gold star in the upper-right corner is no longer accepted by TSA at domestic checkpoints. You can still fly with a valid U.S. passport, passport card, or military ID.8USAGov. How to Get a REAL ID and Use It for Travel TSA has also introduced a fallback called ConfirmID, starting February 1, 2026, that lets travelers without acceptable identification attempt online identity verification for a $45 fee, though verification isn’t guaranteed. There is no extra Secretary of State charge for choosing a REAL ID over a standard license at renewal, so if you fly at all and your license is up anyway, it’s a convenient time.

Vision Screening and the Written Test
Every in-person renewal includes a vision screening. You need to read at least 20/40 with both eyes open, with or without corrective lenses.11Legal Information Institute. Illinois Administrative Code tit. 92, 1030.70 – Driver’s License Testing/Vision Screening Bring your glasses or contacts if you wear them. Failing the screening means getting a vision specialist report before the renewal can be processed.
The written knowledge test isn’t required at every renewal. A clean record skips it. Drivers with traffic convictions must pass the written test at least once every eight years.12Illinois Secretary of State. Illinois Secretary of State – FAQs It covers road signs and rules of the road, 35 questions in total.
Road Test Rules for Older Drivers
Under the current statute, drivers age 79 and older must renew in person, and drivers age 87 and older must complete a behind-the-wheel driving demonstration at each renewal.13Illinois General Assembly. 625 ILCS 5/6-109 – Examination of Applicants
That changes on July 1, 2026. HB 1226, signed in August 2025, raises the mandatory road-test age to 87. Once it takes effect, drivers between 79 and 86 will no longer face an automatic road test at renewal. Drivers 87 and older will still demonstrate behind the wheel at every cycle. The Secretary of State keeps authority, at any age, to require a road test for any driver whose record raises safety concerns.
Booking a Chicago Facility Appointment
All Chicago and suburban facilities run on the Secretary of State’s “Skip the Line” appointment system. You schedule online before you go; walk-ins are not accepted at these locations.14Illinois Secretary of State. Skip the Line The program covers 44 of the state’s busiest offices, and every Chicago-area location is on that list.
Downtown, the Flagship DMV at 125 W. Monroe handles the full range of services. The Secretary of State also runs satellite locations inside Mariano’s, Jewel-Osco, and Tony’s Fresh Market stores across the city and near suburbs.15Illinois Secretary of State. DMV Facility Finder The grocery-store facilities tend to run less crowded.
At the appointment, a clerk checks your documents, takes payment, runs the vision screening, and administers the written test if your record requires it. You get a digital photo for the new card. Once everything clears, you walk out with a temporary paper license valid for up to 90 days.16Legal Information Institute. Illinois Administrative Code tit. 92, 1030.89 – Temporary Driver’s Licenses and Temporary Instruction Permits That paper is your legal license and valid ID until the permanent card arrives.
After Your Visit
The permanent card is mailed to the address on file through the U.S. Postal Service. The Secretary of State estimates delivery within 15 business days.17Illinois Secretary of State. Driver’s License and State ID Card Information Confirm your address at the counter, apartment or unit number included. A misdelivered card goes back to the state, and sorting it out adds weeks.
If you move after the renewal, Illinois law gives you 10 days to notify the Secretary of State. You can update your address online without visiting a facility.18Illinois Secretary of State. Address Change
Voter Registration at Renewal
Your renewal transaction doubles as a voter registration step. The National Voter Registration Act requires every license application and renewal to serve as a simultaneous voter registration opportunity unless you decline.19Department of Justice. The National Voter Registration Act of 1993 Illinois uses a front-end opt-out: the registration step appears during your transaction, and you’re registered unless you choose not to be. Address changes at renewal update your voter registration as well, unless you opt out of that too.
