To renew your driver’s license in El Paso, you have three options: online through Texas.gov, by phone, or in person at one of the city’s two DPS driver license offices. A standard renewal costs $33 and gives adults aged 18 through 84 an eight-year license.1Department of Public Safety. If your current card does not have a gold star in the upper right, renewing is also when you upgrade to a REAL ID, now required by TSA for domestic flights since May 7, 2025.2Transportation Security Administration. Can You Renew Online or by Phone?
Texas allows remote renewal, but only if every one of the following is true:3Texas.gov. Online Services Eligibility for Texas Driver License and ID Cards
- You are 78 or younger.
- You hold a Class C, M, or CM license, or a CDL without a hazardous materials endorsement.
- Your last renewal was done in person at a DPS office.
- You are a U.S. citizen with a Social Security number already on file.
- Your license expires within two years or has been expired less than two years.
Miss any one and you must go in person. A few other things will also force you into the office: an outstanding failure-to-appear or failure-to-pay hold from an unpaid traffic citation will block the online renewal until the court clears it,4Department of Public Safety. Failure to Appear/Failure to Pay Program and anyone needing a name change, a vision update, or a new photo because their appearance has changed significantly also has to show up in person.
Drivers 79 and older must renew in person every time. A vision exam is given at the counter. There is no automatic road test based on age, but a specialist can request a skills evaluation or medical records from your doctor if there is reason for concern.5Texas Department of Public Safety. Senior Drivers – Age 65 or Older
Online renewals pull your existing information from DPS records, so you generally need only your license number and the last four digits of your Social Security number. Payment is by credit or debit card.

Documents to Bring
Gather everything before your visit. A missing paper means a second trip.
Proof of U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Presence
One document: an unexpired U.S. passport, an original or certified birth certificate from a state vital statistics office, or a valid Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551) for lawful permanent residents.9Department of Public Safety. U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Presence Requirement If DPS already verified your citizenship on a previous visit, you may not need to show it again.
Social Security Number
You must list your Social Security number on the application. DPS verifies it electronically with the Social Security Administration.10Texas Department of Public Safety. Social Security Number (SSN) The physical card is not required, but bringing it or a W-2 helps if the system flags a mismatch.
Two Proofs of Texas Residency
Both documents must show your name and Texas address. At least one must show you have lived in Texas for 30 days or more. Utility bills (electric, water, gas, internet, or cell phone) count if dated within 180 days. A current mortgage statement, deed, or residential lease also works.11Department of Public Safety. Name Change Documents
If your legal name changed since your last license through marriage, divorce, or court order, bring the original or a certified copy of the marriage license, divorce decree, amended birth certificate, or court order. Photocopies and laminated versions are not accepted.12Texas Department of Public Safety. Driver License/Identification Card and REAL ID Checklist

Getting the REAL ID Gold Star
A REAL ID-compliant Texas license has a gold star in the top right corner. Without that star (or a passport or other acceptable federal ID), you cannot board a domestic commercial flight or enter certain federal facilities.14Texas.gov. Texas REAL ID Renewal is when to fix this. Bring the same identity and residency documents listed above, especially a birth certificate or passport along with proof of your Social Security number, and DPS will issue the renewed card with the star added.13Texas Department of Public Safety. Renewal Fees
Fees are the same whether you renew online or in person:1Department of Public Safety. Driver License Fees
- Standard license, ages 18 through 84: $33 for eight years
- Standard license, age 85 and older: $9 for two years
- Commercial driver license, ages 18 through 84: $97 for eight years
- Commercial driver license, age 85 and older: $26 for two years
Online payments go through credit or debit. In-person offices generally take cards, checks, and money orders.
If Your License Is Already Expired
Texas does not offer a grace period, but you still have renewal options for a while. If your license has been expired for less than two years and you otherwise qualify, you can still renew online. Past two years, you cannot renew at all. Administrative rules treat you as a new applicant: you have to retake the knowledge test and possibly the driving test, and produce the full set of identity, citizenship, and residency documents from scratch.15Cornell Law Institute. 37 Texas Admin Code 15.35 – Renewal of a Texas Driver License Expired over Two Years
Driving in the meantime is a separate problem. Transportation Code Section 521.457 makes it an offense to drive while your license is invalid:16State of Texas. Texas Code Transportation Code 521.457 – Driving While License Invalid
- First offense with no aggravating factors: Class C misdemeanor, fine up to $500.17State of Texas. Texas Code Penal Code 12.23 – Class C Misdemeanor
- Prior conviction or driving without insurance: Class B misdemeanor, up to 180 days in jail and a $2,000 fine.
- No insurance plus a collision causing serious injury or death: Class A misdemeanor.
An expired license can also give an auto insurer a reason to push back on a claim after a crash, even though it does not by itself bar recovery under Texas law.
Military Members and Their Families
Active-duty service members stationed outside Texas can renew electronically no matter when the license expires, and the usual rule that your last renewal had to be in person is waived. The same exception covers their spouse and dependent children.18State of Texas.
