How to Renew Your Driver’s License in Kansas

To renew your driver’s license in Kansas, bring your current license and one piece of mail showing your name and address to a driver’s license exam station, pass a quick vision screening, and pay the renewal fee. If you qualify, you can skip the office entirely and renew online through the state’s iKan portal in a few minutes. You can renew up to one year before your expiration date.

Pick How You’ll Renew

Kansas offers three paths, and the one you can use depends on your situation.

Online through iKan. The fastest option. Go to ikan.ks.gov.1iKan. iKan – Kansas Online Services You qualify if you’re between 21 and 64, hold a standard non-commercial license, aren’t changing your name or address, and either already have a REAL ID-compliant card or don’t need one. You’ll confirm your information, answer vision questions, and pay. The new card arrives by mail.

In person at an exam station. Required if you’re upgrading to a REAL ID for the first time, changing your name, renewing a CDL, or outside the online age window. The Department of Revenue recommends scheduling an appointment through ksrevenue.gov before you go; walk-ins may be taken, but appointments get priority and some rural offices run limited hours.2Kansas Department of Revenue. Find Your Nearest Driver License Exam Station At the counter, an examiner checks your documents, runs a vision screening, takes a new photo, and collects the fee. You leave with a temporary paper license. The permanent card usually arrives in 14 to 20 days, though it can take up to 45.3Kansas Department of Revenue. Driver’s License Frequently Asked Questions

By mail. Limited to active-duty military members and their dependents stationed outside Kansas. They can also request a replacement or a six-month extension. If your license expires while you’re out of state for any reason, it stays valid for up to six months past expiration or 10 days after you return, whichever comes first.4Kansas Legislature. What To Bring for a Standard Renewal

If your name hasn’t changed and you’re not upgrading to REAL ID, the list is short: your current Kansas driver’s license and one piece of mail showing your name and current residential address.5Kansas Department of Revenue. Required Documents and Appointment Scheduling A utility bill, bank statement, or pay stub satisfies the address requirement.

If your legal name is different from the one on your current license, bring a government-issued marriage certificate, a divorce decree restoring your prior name, or a court order of legal name change.6Kansas Department of Revenue. Driver’s License Proof of Identity

At the office, you’ll need to pass a vision screening of at least 20/40 in one eye. If you don’t pass, the examiner gives you a form to take to an eye doctor, who can clear you with corrected vision of 20/60 or better in one eye.7Justia Law. What To Bring if You’re Upgrading to REAL ID

Since May 7, 2025, federal agencies including the TSA require a REAL ID-compliant license or a passport to board domestic flights and enter certain federal facilities.8Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID Check your current card: if there’s no gold star in the upper-right corner, you don’t have one yet, and renewal is the easiest time to upgrade.

You’ll need originals or certified copies in three categories:

  • Identity and lawful presence: an original or certified U.S. birth certificate, valid U.S. passport, or Permanent Resident Card.
  • Social Security number: an unlaminated Social Security card showing your current legal name, a current W-2 or 1099, or a current pay stub with your Social Security number printed on it.
  • Kansas residency: a deed, mortgage statement, lease agreement, utility bill, or bank statement.

Photocopies are not accepted, even notarized ones, and laminated Social Security cards are rejected.9Kansas Department of Revenue. Real ID Frequently Asked Questions If the names on your documents don’t match, bring a name-change document from the list above.

Fees

What you pay depends on your license class and age. For the common Class C passenger license:

  • Ages 21–64: $26
  • Age 65 and older: $20

Class A and B licenses run $32 for ages 21–64 and $24 at 65 and older. A motorcycle endorsement added to a Class C costs $38.50 for ages 21–64. Renewing after your expiration date adds a $1 late fee.10Kansas Department of Revenue. Driver’s License Fee Chart

When To Renew and What Happens if You Miss It

Kansas issues standard licenses for six years to drivers between 21 and 64. At 65, the term shortens to four years. Licenses issued to drivers under 21 expire on the holder’s 21st birthday, with a 45-day grace period to renew without penalty.4Kansas Legislature. Kansas Statutes 8-247 – Expiration of Licenses The expiration date is on the front of your card, and you can renew any time within the year before it.

Outside of that 45-day window for drivers turning 21 and the six-month extension for people out of state, Kansas does not offer a general grace period. Your license becomes invalid on the expiration date. Driving on an expired license can bring a traffic citation and insurance complications if you’re pulled over or in an accident. If your license has been expired for an extended period, you may be required to retake the written and driving exams rather than simply renewing.

Special Situations

CDL Holders

A Kansas commercial driver’s license expires every five years.4Kansas Legislature. Kansas Statutes 8-247 – Expiration of Licenses Along with your current CDL and proof of address, bring your DOT medical examiner’s certificate if your self-certification category requires one.5Kansas Department of Revenue. Required Documents and Appointment Scheduling A hazardous materials endorsement adds steps: you must present a lawful-presence document and have completed TSA fingerprinting before renewing. Some CDL transactions can be done through iKan, but address changes require an in-person visit.

Non-U.S. Citizens

Kansas requires immigration documents at every license issuance, including renewals.5Kansas Department of Revenue. Required Documents and Appointment Scheduling Bring your current documentation, such as a Permanent Resident Card, Employment Authorization Document, or valid foreign passport with I-94, along with the standard renewal documents. The state verifies status through a federal database, and your license cannot be issued until that verification clears.

Adding a Veteran Designation

Kansas prints a “Veteran” designation on the license at no extra charge. To add it during renewal, bring a DD-214 showing honorable discharge or discharge under honorable conditions, an NGB-22 with the same discharge status, a VA card, or a retired military ID.5Kansas Department of Revenue.
