To renew your driver’s license in Massachusetts, most Class D (passenger) and Class M (motorcycle) holders can complete the whole thing online in a few minutes for $50, and the license is good for another five years.1Mass.gov. Renew Your REAL or Standard Passenger (Class D) or Motorcycle (Class M) Driver’s License You can renew as early as one year before the expiration date and as late as two years after. Certain situations force an in-person visit to an RMV Service Center or AAA branch.
Renewing Online
If you already hold a standard or REAL ID license and want to renew the same type, use the RMV’s Online Service Center. You’ll enter your date of birth, license number, last name, and the last four digits of your Social Security number, then pay the $50 fee.1Mass.gov. Renew Your REAL or Standard Passenger (Class D) or Motorcycle (Class M) Driver’s License The new card is mailed to the address on file within 10 to 14 business days.
Online renewal is blocked if your license is suspended or revoked, if you have unpaid parking tickets, excise taxes, or EZDriveMA toll violations, or if you don’t have a Social Security number. Limited-term license holders also must appear in person.1Mass.gov. Renew Your REAL or Standard Passenger (Class D) or Motorcycle (Class M) Driver’s License Upgrading from a standard license to a REAL ID? You can start online but have to finish at a service center or AAA location.
Clearing Blocks Before You Renew
The RMV won’t process a renewal while certain debts or legal issues sit on your record, and you can’t resolve them at the RMV counter. You have to go back to whoever reported the problem.
Unpaid motor vehicle excise taxes are one of the most common culprits. A local tax collector can notify the RMV of the unpaid bill, and once that notice is in the system, no renewal of your license or registration will go through until the collector confirms it’s settled.2General Court of Massachusetts. Massachusetts Code Chapter 60A Section 2A Contact the tax collector’s office in the city or town that issued the bill. The same mechanism applies to unpaid parking tickets and EZDriveMA tolls, resolved with the issuing municipality or MassDOT.
Child support arrears cause a bigger problem. Under M.G.L. Chapter 90, Section 22(g), the RMV will suspend your license indefinitely if the Department of Revenue’s Child Support Services Division reports you’ve fallen behind.3Mass.gov. Non-Motor Vehicle Suspensions That’s a full suspension, not just a renewal hold, and you’ll need a payment arrangement with DOR before it lifts. Outstanding warrants can trigger similar holds. In every case the clearance has to be transmitted electronically to the RMV before the renewal will go through, so leave a few days for processing.
When You Have to Renew in Person
If online renewal isn’t available to you, schedule an appointment at an RMV Service Center through mass.gov. Walk-ins aren’t the norm and booking ahead saves real time. The clerk reviews your documents, takes a new photo, and processes payment.
AAA members have another option. Participating AAA branches across Massachusetts handle license renewals and several other RMV transactions.4Mass.gov. RMV Services at AAA Reservations go through aaa.com/reservations up to two weeks in advance, and wait times are often shorter than at busier RMV offices.
Documents for a REAL ID
Since May 7, 2025, federal law requires a REAL ID-compliant license or a passport to board domestic flights and enter federal facilities.5Mass.gov. Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles Urges Residents to Act Now and Plan Ahead for REAL ID Compliance Upgrading for the first time means an in-person visit with:
- Proof of lawful presence, such as a U.S. passport, birth certificate, or permanent resident card.
- Social Security verification, such as your Social Security card, a W-2, or a pay stub showing your full SSN.
- Two proofs of Massachusetts residency, such as a lease, mortgage statement, or utility bill.
These requirements come from the REAL ID Act’s minimum issuance standards, which every state has to follow.6U.S. Department of Homeland Security. REAL ID Act of 2005 If you already have a Massachusetts REAL ID and nothing about your name or address is changing, you can usually renew online without presenting the documents again.7Mass.gov. Drivers Age 75 and Older
Massachusetts law requires drivers 75 or older to renew in person. There is no online option.8Mass.gov. Massachusetts RMV Information for Older Drivers You’ll need to pass a vision screening at the appointment, given by RMV or AAA staff. If you’d rather use your own eye doctor, bring a completed vision screening certificate from an optometrist or ophthalmologist confirming you meet the RMV’s vision standards.9Mass.gov. Medical Standards for Passenger (Class D) and Motorcycle (Class M) Driver’s Licenses Drivers with monovision (distance vision in only one eye) need a certificate from an ophthalmologist or optometrist rather than the computerized screening at the counter.
Active-Duty Military
If you’re on active duty, Massachusetts does not require you to renew during your service. If you’re stationed outside the state and can’t return before the expiration date, you can request a temporary license from the RMV valid for up to 60 days past that date. The extension can only be granted once, and it won’t be issued if your license is in non-renewal status for other reasons. The temporary card is mailed to your out-of-state address.
After an honorable discharge, you have 60 days to return to Massachusetts and renew. Spouses and dependents stationed out of state with a service member can also request the 60-day temporary extension, but the post-discharge 60-day renewal window applies only to the service member.
Fees
A five-year Class D or Class M license renewal costs $50. A motorcycle endorsement added to an existing Class D license costs $15, prorated at $3 per year. Non-citizens whose authorized stay is shorter than five years pay a prorated fee of $10 per year for the length of the license.10Mass.gov. RMV Schedule of Fees
If Your License Already Expired
You can still renew a Massachusetts license up to two years after it expires, using the same process and paying the same $50 fee.1Mass.gov. Renew Your REAL or Standard Passenger (Class D) or Motorcycle (Class M) Driver’s License Once it’s been expired more than two years, a simple renewal is no longer available. You’ll have to retake the learner’s permit written exam and the road test, starting the process over.
Driving on an expired license is illegal in the meantime. Fines typically run $100 to $500, and the stop creates a record that can raise your insurance rates. If the license has been expired long enough that an officer treats the incident as unlicensed operation rather than a lapse, the consequences get significantly worse.
Address Changes and Voter Registration
If you’ve moved, Massachusetts law requires notifying the RMV within 30 days.11Mass.gov. Change Your Address With the RMV Renewal is a natural time to handle it, because the new card is mailed to whatever address the RMV has on file. Update the address through the RMV’s online portal before you renew, or the card could go to your old home.
Since January 1, 2023, Massachusetts automatically transmits information from qualifying license transactions to the Secretary of the Commonwealth for voter registration under the VOTES Act. The RMV application no longer includes an option to decline. To opt out of voter registration, contact your city or town clerk directly after the transaction.12Mass.gov. Automatic Voter Registration
After You Renew
Once payment goes through, the RMV mails the new license to the address on file, and delivery takes 10 to 14 business days.1Mass.gov. Renew Your REAL or Standard Passenger (Class D) or Motorcycle (Class M) Driver’s License If 30 days pass without the card arriving, contact the RMV to verify your mailing information and request a replacement. Your renewal confirmation serves as proof that the license is current if you’re pulled over in the meantime.
