How to Renew Your Driver’s License in North Carolina

To renew your driver’s license in North Carolina, you can go online, visit an NCDMV driver license office, or in narrow cases mail in your application. Renewal costs $6.50 per year of validity, which works out to $32.50 for a five-year license or $52 for an eight-year license.¹ Your renewal window opens 180 days before the expiration date printed on your current license,² and which method you can use depends largely on whether you have (or want) a REAL ID.

When You Can Renew and What Happens If You Wait

The 180-day window before expiration is your earliest opportunity. If your license has already expired, you can still renew it for up to two years past the expiration date.³ After two years you are no longer renewing at all: you would need to apply for a brand-new license and retake the full written and road tests.

Driving on an expired license is an infraction under state law.⁴ It won’t put you in jail, but you can be cited and fined, and things get more complicated if you’re in an accident while your license is lapsed. Insurers may also react. There is no separate late fee for renewing after expiration, but the citation risk is real the moment you drive.

Standard License or REAL ID

Since May 7, 2025, TSA requires a REAL ID-compliant license — or an acceptable alternative like a valid passport or military ID — to board a domestic commercial flight.⁵ A gold star in the upper corner of your current license means you already have one. If not, renewal is a natural time to upgrade, though upgrading to a REAL ID requires an in-person visit even if you’d otherwise qualify to renew online.⁶

A standard license still covers everyday driving if you don’t fly domestically or enter federal facilities. Method matters here too: standard license holders can renew online up to two consecutive times, while REAL ID holders must appear in person at some point during their renewal cycle.³

Documents for a REAL ID

A standard renewal at an NCDMV office generally needs only your current license. A REAL ID application, whether it’s your first or a renewal, requires you to bring all of the following:⁶

One document proving identity and date of birth — a certified birth certificate from a state vital records office, a valid U.S. passport, or a REAL ID from another compliant state.
One document showing your full name and complete Social Security number — a Social Security card, a W-2, or a 1099. Photocopies of the Social Security card are not accepted.
Two documents proving North Carolina residency, such as a utility or cable bill, a housing lease, a mortgage statement, or a property tax statement.

If your name has changed since your last license, bring proof of the legal change (marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order). Update your name with the Social Security Administration at least 36 hours before your NCDMV visit.⁷

Renewing Online

Online renewal through the myNCDMV portal is the fastest option when you qualify.⁸ You cannot renew online if any of these apply:

Your license is suspended or you owe an outstanding debt to NCDMV.
You have a restriction other than corrective lenses on your license.
You’re applying for a REAL ID for the first time.

Non-REAL ID holders can now renew online two consecutive times before an in-person visit is required, a change from the older every-other-cycle rule.³ If you renewed online last time on a standard license, you may still be eligible.

To finish the transaction you’ll need your driver’s license number, date of birth, the last four digits of your Social Security number, and a valid email address.⁸ The fee is $6.50 per year of validity plus a $3 online transaction fee and a 1.85% card processing fee.¹

Renewing In Person

In-person renewal is open to everyone and required for anyone who can’t renew online, including first-time REAL ID applicants and drivers with license restrictions.³ Book an appointment through the NCDMV website before you go; walk-ins are allowed but wait times can be unpredictable.

At the office you’ll go through two screenings before your new photo is taken.

Vision Screening

Every in-person renewal includes a vision test. You need at least 20/40 acuity in one eye, or in both eyes together, with or without corrective lenses.⁹ If you pass only with glasses or contacts, your license will carry a corrective-lenses restriction. Drivers 66 and older must complete a vision exam at every renewal cycle, regardless of method.

Fail the screening and you’ll typically be directed to an eye care professional and asked to bring back documentation that you meet the minimum standard. If your eyesight has shifted since your last renewal, see your optometrist beforehand and bring updated glasses or contacts to the appointment.

Sign Recognition Test

You’ll also identify traffic signs from their color, shape, and meaning.¹⁰ Five minutes reviewing common regulatory and warning signs before you go is worth the effort.

A full written knowledge test is not required for a routine renewal, as long as your license hasn’t been expired for more than two years and you haven’t had certain traffic violations since your last renewal.²

The in-person fee is $6.50 per year of validity, with a 1.22% card processing fee if you pay by credit or debit card.¹

Renewing by Mail

Mail renewal is available to a narrow group: North Carolina residents temporarily living outside the state for at least 30 continuous days.¹¹ You can use this option only once in your lifetime, and it is available only for standard (non-REAL ID) licenses. Active military members have a separate process below.

Download the renewal packet from the NCDMV website or ask NCDMV to send one. Complete the application, sign a vision statement from a licensed vision specialist in the state where you’re temporarily living, and sign a National Sex Offender Affidavit. Mail everything with a check or money order payable to NCDMV to:¹¹

Military Renewals

North Carolina handles military renewals differently from the standard mail track. If you’re on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces or a reserve component, you can renew in a driver license office before deployment using a military designation on your license. A license with that designation can be renewed in person without limitation as long as you provide current military or Department of Defense credentials.¹²

If you’re stationed outside North Carolina, you can renew by mail up to two times in your lifetime. Your Class C license must not be expired by more than two years, your last renewal must have been in person, and NCDMV must have a photo on file taken within the past eight years. Send a copy of your military ID (front and back), a signed vision statement, and a signed National Sex Offender Affidavit to the Military/Internet Unit at the Raleigh address above.¹²

Military spouses and dependents temporarily living out of state can also renew by mail, but only once in their lifetime. A license renewed that way expires 60 days after the holder returns to North Carolina, so plan for another renewal when you move back.¹²

If your license expires while you’re on active duty outside the state, North Carolina law treats it as valid for up to 60 days after your release date, but no more than 18 months past the printed expiration regardless of circumstances.²

After You Renew

You won’t leave the office (or close the browser) with your permanent license. North Carolina issues all driver’s licenses from a central production facility and mails them in an unmarked envelope to the address on file.¹³

At an in-person renewal you’ll receive a 60-day Temporary Driving Certificate that acts as your valid license until the permanent card arrives. Your new license should show up well within that window.¹³ If it hasn’t and your certificate is nearing expiration, call NCDMV at (919) 715-7000 or (919) 861-3555. Keep the temporary certificate with you when you drive: it carries the same information as the permanent license and is legally valid during those 60 days.
