How to Renew Your Driver’s License in Tennessee

To renew your driver’s license in Tennessee, you have four options: online through the Department of Safety and Homeland Security’s e-Services portal, at a self-service kiosk, in person at a Driver Services Center or participating County Clerk office, or by mail. A standard Class D renewal costs $28 and is good for eight years. Which methods you can use depends on your license type, whether you’re due for a new photo, and whether you’re upgrading to a REAL ID.1State of Tennessee, Safety & Homeland Security. When to Renew

The Department of Safety and Homeland Security mails a courtesy renewal notice roughly eight to ten weeks before your license expires. The notice tells you which renewal methods you qualify for. If it never arrived or you’ve lost it, you can still renew; the notice isn’t required.1State of Tennessee, Safety & Homeland Security. Renewing Your License

Don’t leave it to the last day. If you’re renewing by mail, send your paperwork at least 21 days before your expiration date so it can be processed and returned in time.1State of Tennessee, Safety & Homeland Security. Renewing Your License

Renewing Online

Online is the fastest route if you qualify. You can renew through the Department of Safety and Homeland Security’s e-Services portal if you hold a current Class D or Class M license and your last renewal was done in person. Tennessee requires a new photo every other renewal cycle, so if your current license used a carried-over photo, you’ll have to go in person this time.1State of Tennessee, Safety & Homeland Security. Renewing Your License

Online renewal isn’t available if you hold a commercial driver’s license (CDL) or a temporary license, or if you need to change your name, address, or other personal information.1State of Tennessee, Safety & Homeland Security. Renewing Your License

You’ll verify your license number, date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security number. After paying with Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover, you can print a confirmation page to use as a temporary license. The permanent card arrives by mail in about three weeks.1State of Tennessee, Safety & Homeland Security. Renewing Your License2TN.gov. Driver License Fees

Renewing at a Self-Service Kiosk

Self-service kiosks are placed in libraries, county clerk offices, airports, and other public buildings around the state. A kiosk takes your photo, processes the renewal, prints your new license on the spot, and accepts credit or debit cards. Some run 24 hours a day, which helps if you can’t get to a center during business hours.3TN.gov. Driver Service Locations and Appointments

Kiosks handle renewals and replacements for non-commercial licenses only. CDL holders, temporary license holders, and drivers with non-expiring licenses can’t use them, and they don’t accept cash or checks. You can look up kiosk locations on the Department of Safety’s website.3TN.gov. Driver Service Locations and Appointments

Renewing in Person

You’ll need to renew in person for your first renewal, when a new photo is due, when you’re upgrading to a REAL ID, or if you hold a CDL or temporary license.1State of Tennessee, Safety & Homeland Security. Renewing Your License There are two kinds of locations.

Driver Services Centers

Full-service Driver Services Centers handle every transaction: renewals, REAL ID upgrades, CDL renewals, knowledge and skills testing, reinstatements, and new licenses. Bring your current license, required documents, and payment. You’ll present your documents, sit for a new photo, and complete a vision screening. You leave with a temporary license, and the permanent one arrives by mail. Payment can be cash, check, money order, or a major credit card.3TN.gov. Driver Service Locations and Appointments2TN.gov. County Clerk Offices

Participating County Clerk offices process renewals and replacements for non-commercial licenses only. They cannot handle CDL transactions, testing, or reinstatements. County Clerks add a $4 administrative fee on top of the state fee, and their hours and services vary, so check before you go.3TN.gov. Driver Service Locations and Appointments2TN.gov. Renewing by Mail

Mail renewal follows the same eligibility rules as online: your last renewal must have been in person, you can’t hold a CDL or a temporary license, and no changes to your license can be pending. Send the completed application, copies of your required documents, and a check or money order to the Department of Safety and Homeland Security. Give yourself at least 21 days before expiration.1State of Tennessee, Safety & Homeland Security. Renewing Your License

Renewal Fees

Tennessee licenses are valid for eight years, and the fee covers the full period.

  • Class D (standard operator): $28 total, made up of a $26 license fee and a $2 application fee.
  • Class M (motorcycle): $29 total, made up of a $26 license fee and a $3 application fee.
  • County Clerk renewals add a $4 administrative fee.

Payment methods depend on where you renew. Driver Services Centers take cash, checks, money orders, and major credit cards. Online and kiosk renewals require a credit or debit card. Mail renewals require a check or money order.2TN.gov. Driver License Fees

Documents to Bring In Person

If you’re renewing in person for the first time or upgrading to a REAL ID, you’ll bring three categories of documents: proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency, proof of your Social Security number, and two proofs of Tennessee residency. Straightforward online, kiosk, and mail renewals with no changes generally don’t require you to present all of these again.4TN.gov. Regular Driver License

Tennessee issues licenses only to U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents. Acceptable proof of status includes an official U.S. birth certificate, a valid unexpired U.S. passport, a certificate of naturalization, or a permanent resident card (I-551). For your Social Security number, you can use your Social Security card, a W-2 or 1099 from the past 12 months, or a payroll stub that shows your full number.5TN.gov. REAL ID

The two residency documents both have to show your name and current Tennessee address, and they can’t come from the same source. “Current” generally means dated within the past four months. Common accepted proofs include:

  • A landline phone, electric, water, gas, or cable utility bill.
  • A full bank statement (not a checkbook or check register).
  • A current Tennessee motor vehicle registration or title (one, not both).
  • A Tennessee voter registration card.
  • An unexpired auto, life, or health insurance policy (wallet cards aren’t accepted).

A rental lease counts as one proof only when it’s paired with a signed letter from your landlord dated within the past 30 days confirming the lease is current, on letterhead or notarized. You still need a second proof from the approved list.6TN.gov. New Residents

REAL ID at Renewal

Federal REAL ID enforcement began on May 7, 2025. You now need a REAL ID-compliant license or another federally accepted ID (like a valid passport) to board a domestic commercial flight or enter certain federal facilities.7Transportation Security Administration. TSA Publishes Final Rule on REAL ID Enforcement If your current Tennessee license doesn’t show a gold star in the upper right corner, renewal is a natural time to upgrade.

Your first REAL ID application has to be done in person at a full-service Driver Services Center or a participating County Clerk office, with the full document set: one proof of citizenship or legal presence, one proof of your Social Security number, and two proofs of Tennessee residency. After you’ve received your first REAL ID credential, later renewals can be done online, at a kiosk, or by mail if you’re otherwise eligible.5TN.gov. REAL ID

What Happens if Your License Expires

Tennessee does not offer a grace period. Once your license expires, you’re driving without a valid license, and the penalties climb the longer you wait:

  • Expired 30 days or less: no late penalty, but renew right away.
  • Expired more than 30 days but less than 6 months: a $5 late penalty, plus any unpaid renewal fees from prior cycles.
  • Expired 6 months or more: a $10 late penalty.
  • Expired more than one full renewal cycle (8 years): you must retake all examinations, including the vision, written, and driving tests, as if applying for the first time.

Late penalties come on top of the regular renewal fee and don’t shield you from a citation for driving on an expired license in the meantime.8Justia Law. Tennessee Code 55-50-321

Military and Out-of-State Renewals

Active-duty service members stationed outside Tennessee keep a valid license the entire time they’re stationed away. Once discharged, separated, or reassigned to Tennessee, they have 60 days to renew without penalty; during that window the license is valid only when carried with the DD214 or other separation papers.9Cornell Law Institute. Tennessee Comp R and Regs 1340-01-13-.17 – Expirations and Renewals

Civilians living out of state temporarily can renew by mail by submitting notarized copies of their identification along with proof of their current out-of-state address.1State of Tennessee, Safety & Homeland Security. Renewing Your License
