To renew your driver’s license in Virginia, you can go online, mail in your renewal notice, or visit a DMV customer service center any time within the year before your card expires. A standard eight-year renewal costs $32, and first-time REAL ID upgrades add a one-time $10 fee. Virginia requires an in-person visit every other cycle, so whether you can renew remotely depends on how you renewed last time.
When to Renew
Most Virginia licenses expire on your birthday eight years after they were issued. If you’re 75 or older, or if you’re required to register as a sex offender, the license runs five years instead.1Virginia Code Commission. You can start the renewal up to one year before the expiration date printed on your card. Renewing early doesn’t shorten your next cycle; the new license still expires on your birthday eight years out. Standard License or REAL ID
Before you renew, decide whether you want a standard Virginia license or a REAL ID. A REAL ID carries a star in the upper corner and meets the federal standard for boarding domestic flights and entering certain federal buildings. REAL ID enforcement began on May 7, 2025, so a standard Virginia license without the star will no longer clear airport security by itself.3Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID
If you’d rather keep the standard license, you can still fly using a U.S. passport, passport card, or a DHS trusted traveler card such as Global Entry or NEXUS.
The choice matters at renewal because a first-time REAL ID upgrade has to happen in person, requires extra documents, and adds the $10 surcharge on top of the standard fee.4Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. DMV Fees A straight standard renewal with no changes needs minimal paperwork.
Documents You’ll Need
Every renewal uses the Driver’s License and Identification Card Application, Form DL 1P. The form asks for your legal name, address, date of birth, Social Security number, and physical descriptors like height, eye color, and hair color. If nothing has changed since your last renewal and you’re not moving to REAL ID, the form itself is usually all you need for an online or mail renewal.
First-Time REAL ID Documents
Upgrading to REAL ID for the first time means proving three things: legal presence, your Social Security number, and Virginia residency. Bring one legal-presence document (such as a U.S. passport or certified birth certificate), one document showing your Social Security number, and two proofs of Virginia residency.6Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Residency proofs can include a deed or mortgage statement, a utility bill no more than two months old (cell phone bills don’t count), or a residential lease. If Your Name Has Changed
Update your Social Security record before you try to renew. The Social Security Administration issues a replacement card by mail within five to ten business days.8Social Security Administration. Change Name with Social Security The DMV verifies your name against the SSA database, and any mismatch holds up the renewal.
Renewing Online
Online is the fastest route when you’re eligible. Virginia requires an in-person renewal every other cycle, so if you renewed in person last time, you’re generally eligible to renew remotely this time.2Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. You can’t renew online if it’s your in-person cycle, if you need a vision screening, or if you’re upgrading to REAL ID for the first time. Renewing by Mail
Mail renewal works when the DMV sends you a paper reminder and the notice says you’re eligible to renew remotely. Sign and date the form and mail it with a check or money order to:

Don’t send cash. The DMV won’t accept credit card numbers by mail or email. Make the check or money order payable to the DMV.
Renewing In Person
You’ll need to visit a customer service center if it’s your in-person cycle, if a vision screening is required, or if you’re upgrading to REAL ID. Bring your completed Form DL 1P, your current license, and any REAL ID or name-change documents. A representative verifies your paperwork, updates your record, and takes a new photo. You’ll leave with a temporary paper document while the plastic card is manufactured and mailed. Keep the temporary document with you when you drive until the card arrives.
Vision Screening
Virginia requires a vision exam at every in-person renewal. Because most drivers alternate between in-person and remote cycles, that works out to a vision check roughly every 16 years for a typical driver. The standard is 20/40 or better in at least one eye, with or without corrective lenses.11Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Vision Requirements Overview You can take the screening at the DMV, or bring a Vision Screening Report (Form MED 4) completed by an ophthalmologist or optometrist within the previous 90 days.12Virginia Code Commission. Commercial Driver’s Licenses
CDL renewals follow a different process with federal requirements attached. If you drive in interstate commerce, keep a valid medical examiner’s certificate on file with the DMV. Letting it lapse triggers an automatic downgrade of your commercial driving privileges.13FMCSA. Medical
A hazardous materials endorsement also requires a TSA security threat assessment with fingerprinting and a background check. TSA suggests starting at least 60 days before you need the determination. The renewal fee for the threat assessment is $85.25, with a reduced rate of $41 for drivers who already hold a valid TWIC card.14Transportation Security Administration. HAZMAT Endorsement
Active-Duty Military
Active-duty servicemembers stationed away from Virginia, along with their spouses and dependent children aged 16 and older, don’t need a Virginia license to drive in the Commonwealth as long as they hold a valid license from another state or country.15Virginia Code Commission. Virginia also offers a one-time extension for active-duty personnel. It runs until 180 days after you return to the state or three years from the license’s original expiration date, whichever comes first. The license must have been valid when you entered service, and you’ll need to carry proof of active-duty status with it.
What Happens If Your License Has Expired
Driving on an expired license in Virginia is a Class 2 misdemeanor, carrying up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.16Virginia Code Commission. Virginia Code 18.2-11 – Punishment for Conviction of Misdemeanor A second or later offense becomes a Class 1 misdemeanor, with up to 12 months in jail and a $2,500 fine. This is a criminal charge, not a traffic infraction.
Virginia has no formal grace period. The misdemeanor applies whether the card expired last week or last year, so the safe move is to renew before your birthday. If your license has already expired, you can still use the same renewal process, but avoid driving until it’s complete. The longer you wait past expiration, the more likely the DMV is to require a full re-examination rather than a simple renewal.
