You can renew your driver’s license online in Washington through the Department of Licensing website if you’re under 70, didn’t renew online last time, and don’t need a new photo or vision screening. The process takes a few minutes, costs $61 for six years or $81 for eight, and produces a temporary printable license while the physical card is mailed to the address on file. One thing to know up front: a standard Washington license is not REAL ID compliant, so renewing online will not give you an ID that gets you through airport security for a domestic flight.
Whether You Qualify to Renew Online
The DOL opens online renewal one year before your license expires and keeps it open for up to eight years after the expiration date. You can go through a License eXpress account or renew without logging in.
Four situations send you to a licensing office instead:
- You’re 70 or older.
- You renewed online last time. Washington doesn’t allow two online renewals in a row.
- You need a new photo.
- You need to take the vision screening.
Enhanced Driver’s License holders can generally renew online under the same rules. Commercial Driver’s License holders have to appear in person if they carry a hazardous materials endorsement, are upgrading class, or are adding or removing endorsements.
What to Have Ready
Confirm your current home address is on file with the DOL before you start. That’s where the new card gets mailed, and the DOL won’t forward it from an old address. Washington gives you 10 days after a move to update your address, so if yours is stale, fix it with the DOL first.
Then have three things at hand: your driver’s license number, your date of birth, and a credit or debit card for the fee.
The Online Steps
Go to the DOL website. Log into your License eXpress account, or pick the option to renew without an account. Enter your details, confirm everything is accurate, and move to payment by credit or debit card. Once the payment clears, the system returns a confirmation. Somewhere in the flow you may also be offered the chance to update your organ donor designation.
What It Costs
A standard license is $10 per year plus a $1 technology fee built into the total. That comes to $61 for six years or $81 for eight. A few things push the price up:
- Endorsements, such as a motorcycle endorsement, add to the fee.
- An Enhanced Driver’s License costs more than a standard renewal.
- If your license has been expired more than 60 days, the DOL adds a $10 late penalty.

After You Submit
Your confirmation may include a temporary printable license, which lets you keep driving legally while the card is in the mail. If nothing arrives within 30 days, call the DOL at 360-902-3900 (TTY: 711).2Washington State Department of Licensing. Renew Driver License
Renewing After Your License Has Expired
You can still renew online after expiration, as long as the license expired within the last eight years. Renew inside the first 60 days and there’s no DOL late fee, though an officer can still ticket you for driving on an expired license during that window. After eight years, online renewal is off the table. You’ll start over as a new driver, with proof of identity and the required tests.3Washington State Department of Licensing. Renew Enhanced Driver License (EDL)
Driving on an expired license is technically a misdemeanor in Washington, but the statute exempts people who have the expired card in their possession at the stop. An Online Renewal Won’t Make Your License REAL ID
Washington’s standard license carries “Federal Limits Apply” on the front. Since May 7, 2025, it’s no longer accepted for boarding domestic flights or entering certain federal facilities.5Washington State Department of Licensing. REAL ID Washington’s compliant option is the Enhanced Driver’s License, marked with a U.S. flag rather than a star. The EDL meets the federal requirement and also serves as proof of citizenship for land and sea crossings into Canada and Mexico. Renewing your standard license online does not upgrade it to an EDL. That’s a separate process with additional documentation.
Active-Duty Military
If you’re on active military duty, your Washington license stays valid for the length of your service and for 90 days after discharge, regardless of the printed expiration. Carry your military ID with your DOL authorization card as proof. If You Can’t Renew Online
Three alternatives exist if you don’t qualify or would rather not use the website:
- In person at any DOL driver licensing office. Required for anyone 70 or older, anyone who renewed online last time, anyone needing a new photo, and anyone who needs the vision screening. - By mail, but only if your renewal notice specifically offers that option. Return the enclosed form with payment.
- By phone at 360-902-3900, available if you’re under 70 and your last renewal was done in person. Have a credit or debit card ready.
