Where to Take It, What It Costs, and What Happens If You Fail
You can take the FSC exam at any licensed firearms dealer or DOJ Certified Instructor location. You aren’t required to return to the place that issued your original certificate. The test has 30 questions: 10 true/false and 20 multiple choice. Passing takes 23 correct answers, or 75%.7California Legislative Information. If you fail, your $25 covers one free retake. You have to wait at least 24 hours and go back to the same instructor who gave you the first test. Lost Card While Still Valid vs. Expired
If your FSC is still inside its five-year window but the card is lost or damaged, you don’t need to retake anything. Once the certificate has expired, replacement isn’t available. It’s the full retest and the full $25.
After You Pass: Safe Handling and the Waiting Period
A new FSC doesn’t put a firearm in your hands the same day. Before delivery, you also have to perform a safe handling demonstration with the specific gun you’re purchasing, in front of a DOJ Certified Instructor (typically the dealer’s staff). It takes place between paperwork submission and delivery. You’ll show that you can safely load, unload, and operate the firearm’s controls, and the exact steps differ for semiautomatic pistols, double-action revolvers, and single-action revolvers. California also imposes a 10-day waiting period on every firearm purchase.
