You can renew your Florida concealed carry permit online through the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) licensing portal. The license runs for seven years, and FDACS mails a renewal notice roughly 95 days before your expiration date, so most holders have time to complete the whole process from home with a photo, a card payment, and the license number from that notice.1Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. When to Renew
A Florida concealed weapon or firearm license is valid for seven years from the date of issuance.2Florida Senate. Florida Code Title XLVI Chapter 790 Section 790.06 Renew on or before the expiration date printed on the card to avoid any gap in your authority to carry.
If the date slips past you, there is a 180-day grace period during which you can still renew, but with a $15 late fee added on top of the standard renewal fee. After 180 days, the license is permanently expired. You cannot renew it at all at that point, and getting back into compliance means starting over as a new applicant: the full initial application fee (up to $55 for residents), new fingerprints, a fresh background check, and a new firearms training certificate.3Online Sunshine. Florida Statutes Section 790.06
What to Have Ready
Renewal is much lighter than the original application. Florida residents do not need to retake a training course or submit fresh fingerprints. Out-of-state residents renewing a Florida license do have to submit a complete set of fingerprints and pay the fingerprint processing fee.3Online Sunshine. Florida Statutes Section 790.06
Before you open the portal, gather:
- Your renewal notice or license number. The mailed notice contains both.
- A recent color photograph in digital form to upload. A scan of your driver’s license or passport photo will not work.
- A credit or debit card. The resident renewal fee is up to $45, plus the $15 late fee if you are past your expiration date.3Online Sunshine. Florida Statutes Section 790.06

Renewing Through the FDACS Portal
Open the online renewal page on the FDACS site. You will enter your personal information and license details, upload the digital color photograph along with any supporting documents (name-change paperwork, court dispositions), and pay by credit or debit card.5Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. One rule catches people out. Once you submit payment or begin the renewal online, you cannot switch tracks and finish at a regional office or a tax collector’s office instead.5Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. After you submit, you will get a confirmation on screen. The renewed license is mailed to the address on file once processing is complete.
Confirming You Still Qualify
The renewal form contains an affidavit you sign under oath confirming that you still meet the same eligibility criteria that applied when your license was originally issued under Florida Statute 790.06.3Online Sunshine. Florida Statutes Section 790.06 The core requirements:
- You are at least 21 and either a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident alien.
- You have no disqualifying felony conviction, unless your civil and firearm rights have been fully restored.
- You have not had adjudication withheld or sentencing suspended for a violent misdemeanor within the last three years (measured from completion of probation or all court conditions), unless the record has been sealed or expunged.
- You have no controlled substance conviction within the three years before your renewal application.
- You have not been involuntarily committed under Florida’s Baker Act (Chapter 394) or a similar law in another state, unless you have been granted relief from firearms disabilities.2Florida Senate. Florida Code Title XLVI Chapter 790 Section 790.06
Federal Disqualifiers That Override State Eligibility
Meeting every Florida requirement is not enough on its own. Federal law can independently prohibit you from possessing a firearm, and signing the renewal affidavit while federally disqualified is a serious problem.
Under 18 U.S.C. ยง 922(g)(9), a misdemeanor domestic violence conviction is a permanent federal firearm bar when the offense involved physical force or a deadly weapon and the victim was a spouse, cohabitant, or co-parent.6United States Department of Justice Archives. Restrictions on the Possession of Firearms by Individuals Convicted of a Misdemeanor Crime of Domestic Violence Florida’s three-year waiting period for certain misdemeanors does not override that federal lifetime ban.
Federal law also prohibits any “unlawful user of or addicted to” a controlled substance from possessing firearms.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 18 U.S. Code 922 – Unlawful Acts Because marijuana remains a Schedule I substance under federal law, medical marijuana cardholders face a federal disqualifier regardless of Florida’s state program. That is one of the more common surprises at renewal time.
Active-Duty Military Extension
If military orders take you more than 35 miles from your residence, your license does not expire while you are serving under those orders. You get an additional 180 days after returning home to complete the renewal, and FDACS cannot charge late fees or extra costs during that extension. You do need to provide a copy of your military orders or a written verification from your commanding officer before the 180-day window closes.3Online Sunshine. Florida Statutes Section 790.06
After You Submit
The statute does not set a specific processing deadline for renewals the way it does for initial applications. Section 790.06(11) states that the license “shall be renewed upon receipt of the completed renewal form, color photograph, appropriate payment of fees, and, if applicable, fingerprints,” which suggests fairly quick turnaround once FDACS has everything it needs.3Online Sunshine. Florida Statutes Section 790.06 In practice, timelines vary with application volume and whether the agency needs additional documentation from you. You can check status through the FDACS website or by calling the Division of Licensing.
You Cannot Carry on an Expired License
The moment your license expires, you lose the legal authority to carry concealed, even if your renewal application is already sitting in a processing queue. Florida does not treat a pending renewal as a temporary permit. If your license expires during processing, do not carry until the renewed card arrives. Submitting well before the expiration date is the only reliable way to keep continuous coverage.
If Your Renewal Is Denied
A denial arrives as a written letter explaining the reason and enclosing an Election of Rights form. That form lets you request a formal or informal hearing under Florida’s Administrative Procedure Act (Chapter 120).8Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Concealed Weapon License Denial FAQ A formal hearing is appropriate when you dispute the facts behind the denial. An informal hearing fits when you accept the facts but believe FDACS applied the law incorrectly.
The Election of Rights form has a deadline. Failing to respond typically waives your right to challenge the decision, so do not set the letter aside. If the administrative process does not resolve things, judicial review through the courts may be available, and talking to a Florida attorney at that point is worthwhile.
