How to Renew Your Florida Driver’s License Online

You can renew your Florida driver’s license online through the state’s MyDMV Portal if you hold a standard Class E license, it’s REAL ID compliant, it’s in good standing, and you didn’t renew online (or by mail or phone) at your last cycle. The total is $50, including a $2 convenience fee, and the transaction takes about five minutes. Your new card arrives by mail in two to three weeks.

Who Qualifies for Online Renewal

Florida treats online renewal as a convenience service and allows it only every other cycle. If your last renewal happened online, by mail, or by phone, this one has to be done in person.¹

You also have to visit an office if any of these apply:

You hold a commercial driver license. CDLs can’t be renewed online.
Your license isn’t REAL ID compliant (no gold star in the upper right corner).
Your license is marked “TEMPORARY.”
You need a name change from marriage, divorce, or court order.
You want a new photo or need to add or remove a designation.
Your license is suspended, revoked, or canceled.

These restrictions are set by the FLHSMV directly.²

The REAL ID Gold Star

Since January 2020, MyDMV Portal has blocked renewals and replacements for anyone whose license isn’t REAL ID compliant.³ Check the upper right corner of your current card. If there’s no gold star, your first upgrade must happen in person, with identity documents: typically a birth certificate or passport, proof of your Social Security number, and two proofs of Florida residency. After that visit, future renewals become available online.

There’s a second reason to handle this now. As of May 7, 2025, the TSA requires a REAL ID-compliant license or another accepted document like a passport to board domestic flights and enter certain federal facilities.⁴

What It Costs

A standard Class E renewal is $48 by statute, which already includes a driver education surcharge.⁵ Online renewals add a non-refundable $2 convenience fee, so you’ll pay $50 total.⁶

If your license has already expired, a $15 delinquent fee applies for any renewal within 12 months of the expiration date, pushing the online total to $65.⁵

Step-by-Step Through the MyDMV Portal

Go to mydmvportal.flhsmv.gov. You’ll verify your identity with your driver’s license number, date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security number. The system cross-checks that number with the Social Security Administration, so your records need to match at both agencies.²

Once you’re in, the portal walks you through screens to confirm your personal information and mailing address. You can update your address here if it’s changed, and Florida law gives you only 30 days after a move to do so.² Enter a credit or debit card to pay the $50 and submit.

The portal then displays an on-screen confirmation. You can also select to have a receipt emailed. Save or print it. Your existing license stays valid until the new one arrives by mail in two to three weeks.² If it doesn’t show up in three weeks, check status through MyDMV Portal or contact FLHSMV.

Extra Step for Drivers 80 and Older

Online renewal is still available at 80 and above, but Florida requires a vision test at every renewal after age 79. Your physician or optometrist must submit the results to the FLHSMV electronically before you start the online process.¹ The form the doctor uses is the Mature Driver Vision Test (HSMV 72119), on the FLHSMV website.⁷

The test result is valid for one year from the exam date.⁸ If your visual acuity is worse than 20/50 in either eye or there’s an indication of eye disease, the doctor uses a different form (HSMV 72010) and an in-person evaluation may be required. Renewed licenses at 80 and older are valid for six years, rather than the standard eight.¹

Renewing Early or Late

You can renew up to 18 months before the expiration date printed on your card.⁹ Renewing early doesn’t cost you time; the new eight-year clock runs from your old expiration date, not the day you submit.

After your license expires, you have a 12-month window to renew with the $15 late fee. Past 12 months, renewal is no longer available. You’re treated as a new applicant and will need to retake the written exam and possibly the driving exam.¹ Driving on an expired license is also a citable offense.

How Long Your Renewed License Lasts

For drivers under 80, the renewed license is good for eight years from your current expiration date. For 80 and older, six years.¹ The new expiration lands on your birthday within that window. And because online renewal is capped at every other cycle, your next renewal will be an in-person visit.

A Note for Military Members

Active-duty members stationed outside Florida who can’t use online renewal can request a military extension card that keeps driving privileges valid until 90 days after discharge, return to Florida, or getting a license in another state.⁹ The 18-month early renewal window also helps if you can renew before deployment.
