How to Renew Your Illinois Department of Insurance License

To renew your Illinois insurance producer license, finish 24 hours of approved continuing education (including 3 hours of ethics taught live), then submit a renewal application through the National Insurance Producer Registry during the 90-day window before your license expires on the last day of your birth month. The state fee is $215, plus a NIPR processing charge, and the license runs on a two-year cycle.1Illinois General Assembly. 215 ILCS 5/500-135 – License Fees2National Insurance Producer Registry. When Your License Expires

Illinois producer licenses expire on the last day of your birth month every two years. Born in October? Your license lapses on October 31. The renewal portal opens 90 days before that date.2National Insurance Producer Registry. Illinois Resident Renewal Individual

The expiration date is not your real deadline. Your continuing education credits have to be posted to the state system at least 10 business days before you can renew. Education providers themselves have up to 10 days from the Saturday after you finish a course to report that credit. Stack those two windows and the Department’s own guidance makes sense: finish your coursework at least a month before your license expires.3Illinois Department of Insurance. Continuing Education You Have to Complete First

Each two-year cycle requires 24 hours of CE. Three of those hours must cover ethics, and the ethics portion has to be taken in a live format, either a physical classroom or a webinar. Self-study will not satisfy the ethics requirement.4Illinois General Assembly. 215 ILCS 5/500-35 – License The other 21 hours can come from classroom, seminar, webinar, or self-study courses.3Illinois Department of Insurance. Every course must come from a provider the Department of Insurance has approved. A course from an unapproved source will not count no matter how relevant the content. After you finish, the provider submits your completion to the state’s tracking system; you do not file it yourself. Each approved course carries a unique tracking number, so you can match submissions against your own records.

Carrying Credits Over

If you complete more than 24 hours in a cycle, up to 12 excess hours carry forward to the next renewal period. Ethics hours do not carry over. You will complete a fresh 3-hour ethics course every two years regardless of any surplus.

Check Your Transcript Before You Renew

Pull your education transcript on the State Based Systems site before you start the renewal application. The lookup is open to producers without an account and uses your name, the last four digits of your Social Security number, and your license or National Producer Number.5State Based Systems. Education Transcript A missing course on your transcript will block the renewal from going through, and the provider, not the Department, controls the fix. Contact the provider directly if a credit you earned is not showing up.

What to Have Ready Before You Open the NIPR Application

  • Your National Producer Number. If you do not have it on hand, the NIPR site lets you look it up by name and state.6National Insurance Producer Registry. Look Up a National Producer Number
  • Payment for the $215 state renewal fee plus the NIPR processing fee, by credit card or electronic check.1Illinois General Assembly. 215 ILCS 5/500-135 – License Fees
  • Current contact information, including address, phone, and email.
  • Honest answers to the background questions. The application asks about criminal charges, administrative actions, and disciplinary proceedings since your last renewal. The Department cross-references your answers against national databases, and false statements can lead to revocation.

Submitting the Application

Go to the NIPR resident renewal portal and choose to renew an existing license. The system verifies your eligibility against your CE transcript and expiration date, then walks you through screens to update your contact information and answer the background disclosures. The last step before payment is an electronic signature attesting that the application is truthful. Payment runs through a gateway at the end of the flow.

When the transaction clears, you will see a confirmation page with a transaction number. Save or print it. This is your proof that you filed before the statutory deadline, which matters if any timing dispute comes up later.

After You Submit

Illinois does not mail paper licenses. Once the Department processes your application, you download and print the updated credential from SBS or NIPR. Processing typically takes two to five business days while the Department reconciles your CE records and background answers. During that window your status is visible through the Department’s public license search tool, which carriers, employers, and consumers all use to verify producers.7Illinois Department of Insurance. If You Miss the Deadline

There is no grace period that lets you keep selling insurance after your license lapses. Any insurance activity on an expired license exposes you to Department discipline. The reinstatement rules then depend on how long you have been expired.

  • Within 12 months of expiration, you can reinstate without retaking the licensing exam, but you owe double the unpaid renewal fee: $430 instead of $215, plus NIPR charges. Your CE has to be fully current before the reinstatement application will be accepted.4Illinois General Assembly. 215 ILCS 5/500-35 – License
  • More than 12 months past expiration, you have to retake pre-licensing courses and pass the applicable exams again, essentially starting over.8Illinois Department of Insurance. Reinstate a Producer License

Reinstatements inside the first year run through NIPR like a standard renewal, with all penalty fees due at the time of application.

A Note on Criminal History Disclosures

The background section covers more than state issues. Federal law, 18 U.S.C. ยง 1033, independently bars anyone convicted of a felony involving dishonesty or breach of trust from engaging in the insurance business without written consent from a state insurance regulator. Violating that bar is a federal crime carrying up to five years in prison.9Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 18 USC 1033 – Crimes by or Affecting Persons Engaged in the Business of Insurance Whose Activities Affect Interstate Commerce Qualifying offenses include fraud, embezzlement, and forgery. If you have a conviction that may trigger this bar, you need a written 1033 waiver from the Illinois Department of Insurance before you continue working, and you must disclose the conviction on the renewal application. The Department checks national criminal databases, and an undisclosed conviction is grounds for revocation.

If You Hold Licenses in Other States

Nonresident licenses you hold in other states depend on your Illinois resident license staying active. Most states follow the NAIC Producer Licensing Model Act, which conditions nonresident eligibility on an in-good-standing home-state license. Let your Illinois license lapse and your out-of-state credentials can be suspended or terminated as a direct result. Keeping the Illinois renewal on schedule protects every license you hold.
