To renew your Illinois driver’s license, wait for the renewal notice the Secretary of State mails about 90 days before your birthday, check which methods it says you qualify for, and complete the renewal online, by mail, or at a Driver Services facility before your license expires. Most drivers between 21 and 80 renew every four years for $30, but your path depends on your age, your driving record, whether you renewed remotely last time, and whether you want a REAL ID.
When to Renew
Illinois licenses expire on your birthday. You can renew up to one year before a four-year or two-year license expires, and up to six months before a one-year license expires.1Illinois Secretary of State. Drivers License and State ID Card Information
How often you renew depends on your age:
- Ages 21 through 80: every four years
- Ages 81 through 86: every two years
- Age 87 and older: every year

Credit card payments carry an additional processing fee.
Which Method You Can Use
Your renewal notice tells you whether you qualify for the Safe Driver Renewal program, which allows online or mail-in renewal. To be eligible, you must be between 21 and 78, have no traffic convictions on your record, and have no suspensions or revocations.4Illinois General Assembly. One rule catches people off guard: if you renewed remotely last time, you must renew in person this time. The state alternates cycles so it can update your photo and check your vision. You also have to renew in person if you’re 79 or older, upgrading to a REAL ID for the first time, or changing your name or address.
Renewing Online
If your renewal notice says you qualify, go to the Safe Driver Renewal portal on the Secretary of State’s website and enter the PIN or Renewal Authorization Number printed on the notice.5Illinois Secretary of State. When you finish, you can print a temporary digital license to use until your permanent card arrives by mail.
Renewing by Mail
Mail-in renewal uses the same eligibility rules as online renewal. Your renewal notice will include a form and instructions if you qualify. Complete the form and mail it with payment to the Secretary of State’s office.
Mail renewal does not include a temporary paper license, so send your application at least 30 days before your expiration date. If your birthday is closer than that, use the online or in-person option instead.
Renewing in Person
In-person renewal happens at an Illinois Secretary of State Driver Services facility. You can schedule an appointment on the Secretary of State’s website; some locations accept walk-ins, and there are dedicated walk-in facilities for seniors.6Illinois Secretary of State. Appointments
What to Bring
For a straight renewal with no changes, bring your current Illinois driver’s license and one document proving your signature (a credit or debit card, U.S. passport, or Social Security card works). If your address has changed, also bring one proof of Illinois residency dated within 90 days, such as a utility bill, bank statement, or piece of government mail.7Illinois Secretary of State. Tests You May Face
Every in-person renewal includes a vision screening. The Secretary of State also examines every driver at least once every eight years, so you may be given a written knowledge test depending on when you last took one, and drivers with recent traffic convictions are more likely to be required to test.8Illinois General Assembly. A behind-the-wheel driving test is required at renewal for drivers 87 and older. Commercial license holders 75 or older must also complete a driving demonstration. Other drivers generally don’t take a road test at renewal unless the Secretary of State specifically requires one.
At the Counter
You’ll fill out an application, take the vision screening, have a new photo taken, and pay by credit or debit card, check, or cash. You’ll be asked about organ donor registration and voter registration. You leave with a temporary paper license good for 90 days, and your permanent card arrives by mail, typically within 15 business days.
Upgrading to a REAL ID
Since May 2025, boarding a domestic flight or entering certain federal facilities requires a REAL ID-compliant license (marked with a gold star) or another federally accepted ID such as a U.S. passport.9Transportation Security Administration. If you already have a REAL ID and are just renewing, the document requirements are light: one proof of signature, plus two proofs of Illinois residency if your address changed. If you’re upgrading for the first time, you’ll need one document from each of four groups: signature, date of birth, Social Security number, and two proofs of residency. If your name has changed since your birth document was issued, bring the marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order that documents each change.7Illinois Secretary of State. Document Requirements to Obtain a Drivers License/State ID Card Pulling those documents together is the slowest part of a first-time REAL ID upgrade, so start well before your renewal date.
If Your License Has Already Expired
Driving on a license that expired less than a year ago is a petty offense with a fine of up to $500.10Illinois General Assembly. Illinois Compiled Statutes 625 ILCS 5/6-601 – Penalties Within that first year, you can still renew normally at a Driver Services facility without retaking all your tests.
Once your license has been expired for more than a year, driving on it becomes a Class B misdemeanor, punishable by up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $1,500.11Illinois General Assembly. You’ll have to apply as a new driver and pass the vision screening, the written knowledge test, and a behind-the-wheel driving exam.
Deployed or Stationed Outside Illinois
If you’re on active military duty stationed outside Illinois, the Secretary of State can defer your license expiration for the length of your service plus 120 days after you return or are discharged. The same deferral covers your spouse and dependent children living with you, and a similar provision applies to civilians employed by the U.S. Armed Forces or Department of Defense who are stationed outside the state.2Illinois General Assembly.
