How to Renew Your Illinois Driver’s License: Methods, REAL ID, and Fees

To renew your Illinois driver’s license, you have three options: online through the Secretary of State’s Safe Driver Renewal program, by mail, or in person at any Driver Services facility. Which one is open to you depends on your age, your driving record, and whether you want a REAL ID-compliant card. You can start up to one year before your license expires, and standard fees range from free to $30 based on age.

When to Renew

A standard Illinois license is valid for four years and expires on your birthday.¹ You can renew up to one year before a four-year or two-year license expires, or six months before a one-year license expires.² The Secretary of State mails a renewal notice roughly 60 to 90 days before expiration, and it contains the PIN or Renewal Authorization Number you’ll need for online or mail renewal.

Renewal cycles shorten with age. Drivers 81 through 86 get a two-year license, and drivers 87 and older get a one-year license.¹ If you move, you have 10 days to update your address with the Secretary of State, otherwise your renewal notice goes to the wrong place.³

Which Method Can You Use

Online and mail renewal both run through the Safe Driver Renewal program, and the eligibility rules are the same for both. You qualify only if all of the following apply:⁴

You have no traffic convictions or offenses that would trigger a mandatory revocation.
You are between 21 and 78 years old.
Your last two renewals were not both completed remotely; three in a row is not allowed.
You are not upgrading to a REAL ID for the first time.⁵
You have no outstanding medical or vision requirements.

Your renewal notice tells you whether you qualify. If it includes a PIN or Renewal Authorization Number, you can renew remotely; if it does not, you need to visit a facility. Everyone else, including drivers under 21, drivers 79 and older, and anyone with a recent conviction on their record, has to renew in person.

Renewing Online

Enter your PIN or Renewal Authorization Number at the Secretary of State’s renewal portal and pay with a credit card, debit card, or e-check.⁵ You get a digital receipt as temporary proof while your permanent card is mailed. No vision test, no facility visit.

Renewing by Mail

Complete the form on your renewal notice, enclose a check or money order for the fee, and mail everything in the pre-addressed envelope to the Springfield address provided. Mail processing takes longer than online renewal because the office has to open and handle the paperwork by hand.

Renewing in Person

Visit any Driver Services facility. Most locations use an appointment system on the Secretary of State’s website, and booking one cuts down the wait. Bring your documents, complete a vision screening at the counter, then move to the photo station. The whole visit usually takes 30 minutes to an hour. Drivers 79 and older must also take a road test at renewal, so allow extra time to schedule that.⁶ To pass vision screening without restrictions, you need 20/40 binocular acuity; below that, expect a corrective-lens or daylight-only restriction on your license.⁷

REAL ID or Standard License

Federal REAL ID enforcement began May 7, 2025. Without a REAL ID-compliant license or another accepted document like a passport, you cannot board a domestic flight or enter certain federal buildings.⁸ Starting February 1, 2026, travelers without an acceptable ID face a $45 TSA surcharge per trip, or $90 for trips over 10 days.⁹

A REAL ID card carries a gold star in the upper-right corner. A standard license is marked “Federal Limits Apply” and remains valid for driving, but you’ll need a passport to fly. If you’re upgrading to a REAL ID for the first time, you must go to a facility in person and bring extra documentation; you cannot upgrade online or by mail.⁵ There is no separate fee for the upgrade; it costs the same as a standard renewal.

What to Bring

For a standard renewal with no address change, you need one identity document from the Secretary of State’s “Group A” list, such as a valid U.S. passport, a certified birth certificate, or your current Illinois driver’s license.¹⁰ Changing your address at the same time means bringing one proof of residency such as a utility bill, bank statement, or mortgage document.

For a first-time REAL ID upgrade, requirements are stricter: one identity document, proof of your full Social Security number, and two documents proving your current Illinois address. Bank statements dated within 90 days and utility bills for electric, water, gas, or phone service both count as residency proof. For the Social Security piece, bring your Social Security card, a W-2 showing your full number, or a recent pay stub with your full SSN on it.¹¹

Fees

Renewal fees are set by statute and depend on your age at renewal:¹²

Ages 21 through 68: $30 for a four-year license
Ages 69 through 80: $5
Ages 81 through 86: $2
Age 87 and older: free

A duplicate license, if yours is lost or stolen, costs $5, and is free if you’re 60 or older, active military or a military spouse, or if you file a police report for a stolen card.¹³ Illinois has authorized an eight-year license option at $60 that the Secretary of State must begin offering no later than July 1, 2027, so it may become available during a future renewal.¹²

If Your License Has Already Expired

Illinois gives you a practical one-year window after expiration to renew without retaking the written or road tests. Your license is expired during that window and you should not be driving on it, but the renewal itself remains straightforward.

Let it lapse for more than a year and the picture changes. Driving on a license expired more than a year is a Class B misdemeanor, carrying up to 180 days in jail and a $1,500 fine.¹⁴ You’ll also likely have to retake the written exam and possibly the road test, essentially starting over.

After You Renew

You leave the facility, or complete the online transaction, with a temporary paper document that’s legally valid for driving. Your permanent card is printed centrally and mailed to the address on file, and should arrive within 15 business days.⁵ If it hasn’t arrived after three weeks, check the online tracking tool or contact the Secretary of State’s office.

One thing that catches people out: Illinois runs your record through the National Driver Register’s Problem Driver Pointer System, a federal database of suspensions, revocations, and serious traffic convictions from other states.¹⁵ If another state has flagged you, your Illinois renewal is held until you clear it up. An unpaid ticket from a road trip years ago is exactly the kind of thing that surfaces here.
