How to Renew Your Louisiana CDS License Online

Louisiana CDS license renewal runs through the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy each year between November 1 and December 31, costs $25, and must be completed through the Board’s online portal or by mailed application before midnight on December 31. Miss that window and the license expires with no grace period, which means you lose prescribing authority and have to apply for reinstatement at eight times the renewal fee.1Louisiana Board of Pharmacy. The Renewal Window

Renewals open November 1 at 12:00 AM and close December 31 at 11:59 PM. Applications not received or postmarked by December 31 are returned unprocessed, and the Board then requires a reinstatement application rather than a renewal.1Louisiana Board of Pharmacy. Pharmacy Renewal and Reinstatement There is no grace period. One day late is the same as a month late in the Board’s eyes: the license has expired, and you cannot legally prescribe, dispense, or handle controlled substances until reinstatement is complete.

Submit early in November if you can. The portal opens at the start of the window, and filing before the holiday weeks avoids the risk of a last-minute technical problem bumping you past the deadline.

What to Have Ready Before You Log In

Pulling your information together before you open the portal keeps the submission moving. You will be asked for the complete street address of the location where you engage in the activity requiring the CDS license.2Legal Information Institute. Louisiana Administrative Code tit. 46, LIII-2707 – Licensing Procedures If you work at more than one site, confirm the primary address on file is still correct.

Underlying Professional License and DEA Number

Your underlying license from the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners, the Board of Nursing, or another regulatory body must be active and in good standing. An expired or suspended professional license will block the CDS renewal. Have your current DEA registration number ready; the application asks for it, and the DEA independently requires that all state licensing requirements be met as a condition of maintaining your federal registration.3Drug Enforcement Administration. Three Hours of Controlled-Substance CE

Every practitioner with prescriptive authority who holds a CDS license must complete three hours of continuing education specifically focused on controlled substance prescribing.4Justia Law. Louisiana Revised Statutes 40:978.3 – Continuing Education for Controlled Dangerous Substances The requirement has applied to every renewal since January 1, 2019.

The coursework must cover drug diversion training, best practices for prescribing controlled substances, and appropriate treatment for addiction. Physicians must also receive instruction on chronic pain treatment. You can meet the requirement with one three-hour program, three one-hour programs, or any combination totaling three hours.5Legal Information Institute. Louisiana Administrative Code tit. 46, XLV-4005 – Continuing Medical Educational Requirement for Controlled Dangerous Substances Keep your completion certificates. The Board can audit, and missing documentation can result in a denied renewal.

Submitting the Renewal

Renewals go through the Board of Pharmacy’s online services portal at secure.pharmacy.la.gov. Log in with your existing credentials and choose the renewal option from the online services menu. The system prepopulates some fields from your prior filing. Verify everything, particularly your practice address and license classification, before you submit. Mismatched addresses and outdated information are among the most common reasons for processing delays.

At the final step you provide an electronic signature attesting the information is accurate and move to the payment screen. Once payment clears, the portal generates a confirmation number. Save or print it. That is your proof of submission until the renewed certificate issues, and the system updates your status to show a pending renewal.

Paper applications are also accepted. The renewal form is available on the Board of Pharmacy’s forms page, and a mailed application must be postmarked by December 31.1Louisiana Board of Pharmacy. Pharmacy Renewal and Reinstatement

After submitting, you can verify your status at any time through the Board’s online credential verification tool. The lookup is public, so employers and insurers can check it too.6Louisiana Board of Pharmacy. Credential Verifications

Fees

The standard renewal fee is $25, which is the annual cap Louisiana law sets for CDS licensees.7Justia Law. Louisiana Revised Statutes 40:1013 – Funding Authority A delinquent renewal fee of $12.50 is added for late filings that still fall before full lapse. Once the license has fully lapsed, reinstatement costs $200.8Legal Information Institute. Louisiana Administrative Code tit. 46, LIII-115 – Fees The portal accepts major credit cards and electronic checks.

If Your License Lapses

The moment a CDS license expires, you cannot legally prescribe, dispense, or handle controlled substances in Louisiana. Writing a prescription for a scheduled drug after expiration puts you in violation of state law.

Reinstatement is a separate process from renewal. It uses its own application form, carries the $200 fee, and each expired credential requires its own reinstatement application.1Louisiana Board of Pharmacy. Pharmacy Renewal and Reinstatement You can submit a reinstatement application online by selecting “Reinstate” from the online services menu, or on paper by mail.

Address Changes Between Renewals

If your practice address changes before the next renewal, notify the Board in writing within 10 days. Updates go through the online services portal under “Address Change” and must include the full street address, city, state, zip code, and parish.9Louisiana Board of Pharmacy. Change of Address The address on your CDS license must match the location where you actually store or handle controlled substances, so a discrepancy found during an inspection creates problems that prompt reporting avoids.

Coordinating With Your DEA Registration

The Louisiana CDS license and the federal DEA registration are separate credentials with separate renewal cycles, and you need both to prescribe or dispense scheduled drugs. A valid DEA registration alone does not authorize you to handle controlled substances in Louisiana.

The two renew on different schedules. Louisiana CDS licenses renew every year in November and December; DEA registrations renew every three years on a rolling basis. Renewing one does not renew the other. Because the DEA conditions its registration on compliance with state licensing requirements, letting the state CDS license lapse can put the federal registration at risk even when the DEA registration itself has not expired.3Drug Enforcement Administration. If the Board Denies Your Renewal

A denial opens two paths. The first is administrative reconsideration: a written request with documentation showing the denial was made in error, submitted to the department within 15 calendar days of the denial notice. You can appear in person and bring counsel.10Legal Information Institute. Louisiana Administrative Code tit. 48, I-6819 – Notice and Appeal of License Denial, License Revocation and Denial of License Renewal

The second is a formal administrative appeal, filed in writing with the Division of Administrative Law within 30 days of receiving either the denial notice or the reconsideration result. A timely appeal of a renewal denial is suspensive, which means you can keep operating under your existing license until a final administrative decision issues, unless the secretary determines the violations pose an immediate threat to public safety. One limitation runs through both paths: fixing the problem that caused the denial is not itself a basis for reconsideration or appeal. You have to show the original determination was wrong, not that you have corrected the issue since.10Legal Information Institute.
