How to Renew Your Massachusetts Driver’s License: Online or In Person

To renew your Massachusetts driver’s license, use the Registry of Motor Vehicles: either online at Mass.gov or in person at an RMV Service Center or a participating AAA location. A Class D (passenger) or Class M (motorcycle) renewal costs $50 and is good for five years. You can renew up to one year before your license expires or up to two years after.1Mass.gov. Online or In Person: Which One You Qualify For

Most drivers with an existing standard license or REAL ID can renew online. You cannot renew online if any of the following applies:

  • You are upgrading a standard license to a REAL ID.
  • You hold a limited-term driver’s license.
  • Your license is suspended or revoked, or you have unpaid parking tickets, excise tax, or E-ZPass violations.
  • You are 75 or older.
  • You do not have a Social Security number.

Any of those situations means an in-person visit to an RMV Service Center or a participating AAA branch.1Mass.gov. Renew Your REAL or Standard Passenger (Class D) or Motorcycle (Class M) Driver’s License

REAL ID or Standard License

Since May 7, 2025, the TSA has required a REAL ID-compliant license, a U.S. passport, or another federally accepted ID to board domestic flights and enter certain federal facilities.3Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID A standard Massachusetts license still works for driving but won’t get you through airport security on its own. If you already have a REAL ID, you can renew it online with no extra paperwork. If you have a standard license and want to switch to a REAL ID, you must go in person with the required documents.

What to Bring

Straight Renewal (Standard or REAL ID)

If you’re renewing online and none of your information has changed, you generally don’t need to upload or present anything: the RMV checks your existing record. You will need your current license number and a credit card or electronic check for the $50 fee.

Upgrading to a REAL ID

An upgrade requires an in-person visit with original or certified copies (no photocopies) from four categories:4Mass.gov. REAL ID in Massachusetts

  • Proof of lawful presence, such as a U.S. passport, birth certificate, or permanent resident card.
  • Social Security verification, such as your Social Security card, a W-2, or a 1099 showing your full SSN.
  • Two documents proving Massachusetts residency, such as a utility bill, lease, mortgage statement, or bank statement showing your name and current address.

These categories come from the federal REAL ID Act, which sets minimum standards for identity, lawful status, Social Security number, and principal residence.5GovInfo. REAL ID Act of 2005

Standard License With Residency Verification

If the RMV asks you to verify identity or residency for a standard license, acceptable residency documents include a utility bill, lease, insurance policy, pay stub, or a letter from a government agency showing your name and current residential address.6Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles. Renewing Online

The Mass.gov renewal flow walks you through confirming your personal information, verifying your address, and paying the $50 fee by credit card or electronic check. Your existing photo stays on file. Massachusetts reuses the same license photo for up to 14 years, but drivers under 21 and drivers 75 and older must sit for a new photo at every renewal.

Renewing in Person

Book an appointment at an RMV Service Center, or, if you’re a AAA member, at a participating AAA branch through aaa.com/reservations (up to two weeks in advance).7Mass.gov. RMV Services at AAA At the counter, staff verify any required documents, take an updated photo, and run a vision screening. You’ll fill out the Driver’s License, Learner’s Permit or ID Card Application on paper or through the RMV’s system. The $50 fee is payable by credit card, debit card, check, or money order.8Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles. Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles Fees

The Vision Screening

Everyone who renews in person takes a vision screening at the counter. To pass, you need at least 20/40 distant visual acuity in either eye (with or without corrective lenses), at least 120 degrees of combined horizontal peripheral vision, and the ability to distinguish red, green, and amber.9Mass.gov. Medical Standards for Passenger (Class D) and Motorcycle (Class M) Driver’s Licenses

If your vision falls between 20/50 and 20/70 in either eye with at least 120 degrees of peripheral vision, you may still qualify for a license restricted to daylight-only driving. Drivers with sight in only one eye can submit a Class D & M Vision Screening Certificate completed by a Massachusetts-licensed ophthalmologist or optometrist instead of taking the counter screening.2Mass.gov. RMV Forms and Applications

The application also asks you to disclose physical or mental conditions that could affect your driving, such as seizure disorders or cardiovascular issues. The RMV uses those answers to decide whether restrictions belong on your license.

Drivers 75 and Older

If you’re 75 or older, Massachusetts law requires you to renew in person every five years. There is no online option.10Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles. Massachusetts RMV Information for Older Drivers At the appointment, you must either pass the vision test given by RMV or AAA staff, or present a completed Vision Screening Certificate from a licensed ophthalmologist or optometrist that meets the RMV’s standards. A new photo is taken at every renewal for this age group.

Active Military Stationed Out of State

Active-duty service members stationed outside Massachusetts, along with spouses and dependents, can renew by mail; the RMV issues a non-photo license in these cases. Send to the Driver Licensing Department:

  • A completed Driver’s License, Learner’s Permit or ID Card Application.
  • A copy of military orders showing assignment outside Massachusetts.
  • The $50 fee by check or money order.

Mail to: Driver Licensing Department, P.O. Box 55889, Boston, MA 02205-5889. You cannot renew more than one year before expiration. If your license will expire before you can complete the renewal, you can request a temporary 60-day extension, granted once, and only mailed to an out-of-state address.

After You Renew

Your new license arrives by mail in 10 to 14 business days at the address on file. If you renewed in person, you leave with a temporary paper license to carry in the meantime. Keep that paper with you when driving, but note that a temporary license is not accepted as ID at TSA airport checkpoints.11Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint If the card doesn’t show up in the expected window, use the RMV’s “Track My Plate/License” tool for mailing status.

If Your License Has Already Expired

You can still renew within two years of expiration, but driving on that expired license during the grace period is illegal. Getting pulled over can lead to fines and higher auto insurance rates.

Past the two-year mark, renewal is no longer an option. The RMV requires you to retake both the learner’s permit written exam and the road test, starting the licensing process over. The simplest way to avoid any of this: renew early. The window opens a full year before expiration, and your new five-year term runs from the old expiration date, so you don’t lose any time by getting it done ahead of schedule.
