How to Renew Your NC Driver’s License Online: REAL ID and Fees

You can renew a North Carolina driver’s license online at payments.ncdot.gov if you hold a valid Class C license, aren’t suspended, don’t owe the NCDMV money, and meet a short list of other conditions. The fee is $6.50 per year of coverage, the transaction takes about ten minutes, and your new card arrives by mail within 20 business days. A 60-day temporary certificate covers you in between.

Who Can Renew Online

North Carolina’s remote renewal is authorized by N.C. General Statute § 20-7(f)(6), and every condition on the list has to be met. You need a valid Class C driver license with no restrictions other than corrective lenses. Your license cannot be suspended, and you cannot have outstanding debt with the NCDMV. Commercial driver license holders, Class A and B holders, limited provisional license holders, and learner permit holders cannot use the online portal.1North Carolina Department of Transportation. The consecutive-renewal rule catches people. For a non-REAL ID license, you can renew online twice in a row before the state requires an in-person visit for a new photo and vision test. A REAL ID license can also be renewed online a second consecutive time, but only if you had an in-person transaction with a new photo since your last renewal.1North Carolina Department of Transportation. License and ID Renewal The statute permits a second consecutive online REAL ID renewal if you convert to a non-REAL ID license in the process, which most people won’t want to do.2North Carolina General Assembly. If you have a U.S. government document indicating legal presence, the DMV also requires you to renew in person. The website lists this without further detail, so contact the DMV before starting the online process if you’re unsure whether it applies to you.1North Carolina Department of Transportation. REAL ID Changes the Picture

Federal REAL ID enforcement began on May 7, 2025. A REAL ID-compliant license or another accepted document (such as a passport) is now required to board domestic flights and enter certain federal facilities.3Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID

Your first North Carolina REAL ID cannot be obtained online. Federal law requires the DMV to scan and permanently store your identity documents, so that initial REAL ID has to be issued at a driver license office.4North Carolina Department of Transportation. N.C. REAL ID If you currently hold a non-REAL ID license and want to upgrade, that upgrade requires an office visit even when your license is due for renewal anyway.

If you already hold a REAL ID, you can renew it online under the consecutive-renewal rules above. Getting a REAL ID during the renewal window costs the same as a standard renewal. Getting one outside the renewal window costs the same as a duplicate license and requires a new photo but no tests.4North Carolina Department of Transportation. N.C. REAL ID

What to Have Ready

The document list is short. You need your current license or ID card (or at least the license number) and your Social Security number.1North Carolina Department of Transportation. License and ID Renewal Payment must be a credit or debit card; the portal does not accept cash, checks, or money orders.5North Carolina Department of Transportation. Payment Methods

Check that your mailing address on file with the DMV is right before you start, because the card ships to whatever the state has on record. In many cases you can update an address online or at a self-service kiosk. Do that first rather than hoping the renewal flow will prompt you.

Step-by-Step

Open the NCDMV license renewal page at ncdot.gov and click “Renew Now.” That takes you to the myNCDMV payment portal, which is run by PayIt. Enter your license number, Social Security number, and other identifying details so the system can pull up your record.1North Carolina Department of Transportation. License and ID Renewal

You’ll confirm your residential address and attest that you still live there, that your name hasn’t changed, and that the information you’ve entered is truthful. The statute treats this attestation as a formal requirement.2North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina Code 20-7 – Issuance and Renewal of Drivers Licenses If your name has changed or your address is out of date, stop and handle those changes first. Pushing through with wrong information creates problems that are harder to fix after submission.

Review the fees, enter your card, and submit. A successful transaction updates your record in the state’s system immediately.

What It Costs

A Class C renewal costs $6.50 per year of the license’s duration.6North Carolina Department of Transportation. Licenses and Fees For drivers under 66, that duration is eight years, so the base cost is $52. Drivers 66 and older get a five-year license, making the base $32.50.2North Carolina General Assembly. The portal adds two surcharges: a $3 PayIt transaction fee and a 1.85 percent card processing fee. Neither goes to the state.7North Carolina Department of Transportation. Vehicle Title and Registration Fees A $52 renewal comes out to roughly $56 after both. Renewing in person with a card carries a lower card processing fee at 1.22 percent, and you can avoid that fee entirely by paying with cash or check at the office.5North Carolina Department of Transportation. After You Submit

Once payment goes through, the system issues a temporary driving certificate valid for 60 days.2North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina Code 20-7 – Issuance and Renewal of Drivers Licenses That certificate is your legal proof of driving privileges until the physical card arrives. Keep a copy on your phone or printed out when you drive. Officers can verify your status electronically, but having the certificate handy avoids friction during a stop.

The permanent card arrives by mail within 20 business days, which works out to roughly four weeks on the calendar.1North Carolina Department of Transportation. License and ID Renewal If it hasn’t shown up by the end of that window, call the NCDMV to check on mailing status. Don’t let the temporary certificate lapse without following up.

If Your License Has Already Expired

The NCDMV renewal page indicates that state IDs can be renewed up to two years after expiration. If your license expired recently and you meet the other eligibility rules, the online portal is still available. The longer you wait, the more likely something changes and forces an office visit.

Once a license has been expired for more than two years, expect to visit an office and possibly retake the vision test. The state treats a long-lapsed license differently from one that just slipped past its date.

Driving on an expired license is an infraction under N.C. General Statute § 20-35. You have a defense if you renew within 30 days of expiration and could not have been charged with driving without a license at all had you held the renewed license at the time.8North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina Code 20-35 – Penalties for Violations Treat that 30-day window as a safe harbor, not a reason to delay.

Deployed Military Members

Active-duty service members deployed when their license expires have a separate defense under N.C. General Statute § 20-35(d). You cannot be found responsible for driving on an expired license if you provide verifiable written proof of deployment and renew within 30 days of returning.8North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina Code 20-35 – Penalties for Violations

Late fees on vehicle registration are also waived if you were deployed when the registration expired and you renew within 30 days of your deployment ending. Full provisional license holders who are deployed out of state can convert to a full license remotely.2North Carolina General Assembly. Voter Registration in the Same Session

Under the National Voter Registration Act, any state that offers remote driver license renewal must offer a voter registration opportunity through the same channel.9U.S. Department of Justice. The National Voter Registration Act Of 1993 North Carolina’s State Board of Elections lets you complete registration online through the DMV system. If you’re already registered, an address change submitted with your renewal also serves as a change-of-address notification for voter registration unless you opt out. The registration piece is separate from the license transaction and carries no additional fee.
