To renew your New Hampshire driver’s license, you have three options: online through the DMV’s renewal portal, by mail, or in person at any DMV office by appointment. The renewal window opens 60 days before your birthday and closes 60 days after it, and the fee runs $50 for a standard license or $60 for a REAL ID or commercial license. The DMV mails a renewal notice about two months before your expiration date, but you can start the process without waiting for it.
When Your License Expires
New Hampshire licenses are good for five years and expire on your birthday.1New Hampshire General Court. New Hampshire Code 263:10 – License Expiration The renewal notice the DMV sends roughly two months out includes a Renewal Identification Number (RIN), which you need if you want to renew online. The RIN works starting 60 days before your birthday and stays active until 60 days after.2New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles. Online Renewals
If your address isn’t current with the DMV, the notice won’t reach you, and a missing notice doesn’t push your deadline. Your license is legally expired the day after your birthday, so if you’re close to the line, finish the renewal before that date rather than after.
The Three Ways to Renew
Online
Online is the fastest route if you qualify. You’ll need the RIN from your notice, and the system has to confirm your eligibility. First-time REAL ID applicants can’t use it, and neither can anyone whose notice says they’re ineligible or who gets locked out during the attempt.2New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles. Online Renewals There’s also an every-other-cycle rule: if you renewed online last time, you have to come in person this time.1New Hampshire General Court. New Hampshire Code 263:10 – License Expiration You pay by credit card and print a temporary license at the end of the transaction.
In Person
In-person renewals require an appointment at any DMV office, booked through the DMV’s online appointment system.3New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles. Renew a Driver License/CDL/Non Driver ID Bring your completed Application for Driver License (form DSMV 450), your current license, the fee, and any REAL ID documents if you’re upgrading. The DMV takes a new photo and administers a vision test.4New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles. Driver Licensing Testing Requirements
By Mail
Mail-in renewal is open for standard renewals when nothing on your record is changing. Send the completed DSMV 450 and a check or money order payable to the State of New Hampshire to DMV headquarters. It takes longer, and there’s no immediate temporary license.
Documents You’ll Need
For a straightforward renewal, bring your current New Hampshire license and the completed DSMV 450.5New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles. Application for Driver License or Non-Driver ID Card A name change requires an in-person visit with supporting documents such as a marriage certificate or court order.6New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles. Update Personal Information
Upgrading to a REAL ID for the first time means renewing in person with documents proving three things: identity, Social Security number, and New Hampshire residency.7NH Division of Motor Vehicles. REAL ID Identity documents include an original or certified birth certificate or a valid U.S. passport, and the name on your identity document has to match your current legal name. If you’ve changed your name along the way, bring documentation for each change.
Since May 7, 2025, you need a REAL ID or another federally accepted ID (such as a passport) to board domestic flights or enter certain federal facilities.8Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID A standard New Hampshire license is still fine for driving and most everyday uses.
Fees
- Standard (non-REAL ID) operator license: $50
- REAL ID-compliant operator license: $60
- Commercial driver license: $60
The REAL ID upgrade adds $10 over a standard license and nothing else.9New Hampshire General Court. New Hampshire Code 263:42 – Drivers License Fees Online renewals take major credit cards, in-person renewals accept additional payment methods, and mail-in submissions need a check or money order.10NH Division of Motor Vehicles. Your Temporary License and When the Real One Arrives
No renewal method hands you the final card the same day. The DMV issues a paper temporary license valid for 60 days while the permanent polycarbonate card is produced and mailed.11NH Division of Motor Vehicles. Temporary Paper License Most people get the permanent card within about 45 days, and the DMV says it can take up to 60.
One thing to plan around: temporary paper licenses are not accepted at TSA checkpoints. If you have a flight during the gap between renewal and card delivery, use a passport or another TSA-accepted ID to get through security.
If Your License Has Already Expired
You can’t legally drive on an expired license, and the requirements to get a valid one back get stricter the longer you wait.3New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles. Renew a Driver License/CDL/Non Driver ID
- Less than one year expired: renew as usual at any DMV office, no extra testing.
- One to three years expired: bring identification and residency documents matching your license type (REAL ID or standard).
- Three or more years expired: pass a vision test, written knowledge test, and road test before a new license will be issued.
Driving on a license that’s been expired less than 12 months is a violation under state law, and a second offense is a class B misdemeanor.12New Hampshire General Court. New Hampshire Code 263:1 – License Required Penalty Many auto insurance policies also exclude coverage for losses that happen while a driver is operating illegally, which can leave you personally on the hook for an accident.
Military Members Stationed Out of State
Active-duty military members and their spouses who are stationed or deployed outside New Hampshire can renew by mail as many times as needed during active duty, provided the DMV already has a photo on file.13New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles. Military Personnel Contact the DMV directly for the out-of-state submission instructions.
CDL Renewals Have Extra Steps
Commercial driver license renewals use a different application (form DSMV 312) and require a valid medical certificate unless you’re exempt. If you hold a hazardous materials endorsement, you’ll need TSA fingerprinting before testing and will retake the hazmat knowledge exam.3New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles.
