How to Renew Your NJ Driver’s License Online

If you hold a standard basic driver license, a motorcycle license, or an existing REAL ID, you can renew your NJ driver’s license online through the Motor Vehicle Commission’s portal at nj.gov/mvc. The transaction takes under ten minutes, costs $24 for a four-year basic license, and produces a printable temporary receipt that covers you until your new card arrives in the mail within two to four weeks.¹

Who Qualifies to Renew Online

Online renewal is open to holders of a standard basic driver license, a motorcycle license, or a REAL ID that was originally issued in person. If your card is already a REAL ID, the portal will renew it without another trip to a licensing center.²

You cannot use the online system if you have a Commercial Driver License, a Graduated Driver License, an active suspension, an ignition interlock requirement, or a temporary visa restriction on your record. Drivers the MVC needs a new photo from are also routed to an in-person appointment.¹

There is a photo cap for younger drivers. If you are 64 or under, the MVC can reuse your stored photo for two consecutive four-year cycles, but the same photo cannot cover more than 12 years. After that, you’ll need to appear in person for a new one. Drivers 65 and older face no cap and can keep renewing remotely with the photo on file.

What You Need Before You Start

The portal verifies you against records the MVC already has, so three pieces of information must match exactly:

Your New Jersey driver license number, which is 15 characters — one letter followed by 14 digits.³
Your Social Security number. The MVC checks your name, date of birth, and SSN against Social Security Administration records.⁴
The ZIP code the MVC has on file. If you’ve moved and haven’t updated your address, complete the online change of address first; it’s a separate transaction that has to happen before you can renew.⁵

Any mismatch will block the renewal, so pull these details together before you open the portal. You’ll also need a credit or debit card. Cash and checks are only accepted at licensing centers.

Step by Step Through the Portal

Start at nj.gov/mvc and go to the online services section, where there’s a dedicated link for license renewal. The site walks you through identity verification, then moves to payment. During the flow you’ll be asked to confirm your organ donor designation, which the MVC requires each renewal.⁶

Enter your card information and submit. The system processes the payment and generates a confirmation page with a unique reference number. Save it or print it right away, because that page doubles as your temporary driving credential.

Fees

The base fee for a four-year basic license renewal is $24. Renewing a REAL ID adds an $11 REAL ID fee on top of the base.⁷ The MVC also applies a small online convenience fee of roughly $1.50 for processing the digital transaction.

Drivers 70 and older can choose a two-year renewal instead of a four-year one, with the fee prorated to match.⁸

Your Temporary Receipt and the Card in the Mail

Once the transaction goes through, print the temporary receipt and keep it in your vehicle. Your driving record updates immediately, so law enforcement databases will show the new expiration date right away.¹

The physical card usually arrives within two to four weeks in a plain envelope from the MVC. It looks like junk mail, so watch for it. If nothing has come after four weeks, call MVC customer support with your confirmation number to check the status.

One thing the temporary receipt does not do: it is not accepted at TSA airport checkpoints. If you need to fly domestically before the physical card arrives, use a passport or another form of federally accepted ID.⁹

REAL ID at Renewal

Federal REAL ID enforcement for domestic air travel began on May 7, 2025. Without a REAL ID-compliant license or another acceptable federal ID, you’ll be charged a $45 TSA ConfirmID fee when boarding a domestic flight.¹⁰

If your current license is already a REAL ID, online renewal keeps that status. If you have a standard license and want to upgrade, you’ll need to visit a licensing center in person for the first REAL ID; the MVC cannot handle that initial upgrade online.² The REAL ID surcharge is $11 in addition to the $24 renewal fee.⁷

If you carry a U.S. passport or don’t fly domestically, a standard license still works. REAL ID applies to boarding flights and entering certain federal facilities. It has no effect on your driving privileges.

When You Can’t Renew Online

Some situations require an in-person visit no matter what:

First-time REAL ID upgrades, which require you to present 6-point identity documents in person.²
Commercial Driver License renewals.¹
Renewals where the MVC has flagged your stored photo as due for replacement.
Drivers with an expiring visa, who must bring updated immigration documents.
Active suspensions or interlock requirements, which must be resolved before any renewal.

In-person appointments are booked through telegov.njportal.com, and you can schedule a renewal starting about three months before your license expires. Bring 6-point identity documents, proof of address, and payment. The $24 fee is the same at the counter, and licensing centers accept cash, check, money order, or card.¹¹

Why Not to Let It Lapse

Driving on an expired New Jersey license can bring a fine of up to $500, up to 60 days in county jail, or both. If you’ve never held a valid license in any state, the minimum fine is $200 and the court can bar you from obtaining a license for at least 180 days.¹² An expired license can also affect insurance rates and complicate any traffic stop. The online renewal covers you the moment the payment clears, so there is little upside to waiting.
