How to Renew Your NYC DOB Superintendent License

To complete an NYC DOB superintendent license renewal, file your application through the DOB NOW: Licensing portal between 30 and 90 days before your current registration expires, pay the $50 fee, and upload a signed LIC62 physical examination form plus an 8-hour site safety course certificate completed within the past year.¹² Everything else in the process flows from those three anchors: the window, the fee, and the supporting documents.

When to File and What It Costs

NYC Administrative Code Section 28-401.12 sets the renewal window at no earlier than 90 days and no later than 30 days before expiration.¹ Filing on the earlier side gives you room to fix any document the Department rejects without slipping past your expiration date.

The renewal fee is $50, paid online when you submit. File within the final 30 days before expiration and the Department treats it as late: a $50 late fee is added, bringing the total to $100.²

Documents to Gather Before You Log In

Assemble every required document before opening the portal, then scan each one to PDF with signatures and notary stamps clearly legible.

LIC62 Physical Examination Form, signed by a physician, with the exam performed within 90 days of your submission.²
8-hour site safety course certificate from a DOB-approved provider, completed within one year of submission. A certificate that was valid for your last renewal will not qualify if it is now more than a year old.³
Child Support Certification, required for every renewal regardless of whether you have children.⁴
Business change letter if your employer has changed since your last renewal: notarized, on current company letterhead, stating your title, duties, and start date.
Address or phone change proof if either has changed: a notarized letter requesting the update along with a utility bill, bank statement, lease, or deed.²

The LIC2 License Application is the core form. It collects your personal information, current license number, and asks whether you have been convicted of an offense or owe penalties to the City since your last renewal.⁵ If you answer yes to either question, complete and attach the LIC34 Licensing Supplemental Affidavit, which addresses legal and financial disclosures.⁶

Filing in DOB NOW: Licensing

Renewals go through the DOB NOW: Licensing portal at nyc.gov/dobnow.⁷ Sign in with your NYC.ID credentials and select the renewal option for your registration type. The portal presents labeled upload slots so each document lands in the right place for the reviewer.⁸

After the uploads, you sign electronic affirmations confirming that the information is truthful, then pay by credit card or electronic check. The system generates a confirmation receipt and a tracking number. Save both. The tracking number lets you check status, and the receipt is your proof of the filing date if the Department later questions timing.

After You Submit

Review takes several weeks. Track your application through the DOB NOW public portal or the Licensing Search tool. If the Department finds a problem, it typically flags the deficiency and gives you a window to fix it rather than denying outright. Fix flagged issues immediately, because time spent correcting documents can push your effective filing past expiration and into the late-fee tier.

Once approved, the updated registration card is mailed to the address on file, which is another reason to submit any address change with your renewal rather than after. NYC Administrative Code requires you to keep your credentials available on the job site whenever you act in a superintendent capacity.

If Your Registration Has Already Expired

You still have options after expiration, but they get more expensive the longer you wait.

Within one year of expiration, you can apply for late renewal without retaking any examination. You pay the late renewal fee and demonstrate continued fitness to perform the work.⁹

Between one and five years after expiration, reinstatement is possible only if you satisfy the Commissioner that you have maintained competence in the trade and met any continuing education requirements. Fees stack: the renewal fee plus $100 for each year, or partial year, that the registration was lapsed.⁹

After five years lapsed, reinstatement is no longer available. Your only path back is applying from scratch as a new applicant.

Training Credentials That Affect Your Work

The 8-hour site safety course is the credential tied directly to renewal. Separately, Local Law 196 requires Construction Superintendents working on projects that need a Site Safety Plan to hold a 62-hour SST Supervisor card. The supervisor card is not the 40-hour card issued to general construction workers; the 62-hour training is specifically for Site Safety Managers, Site Safety Coordinators, and Construction Superintendents.¹⁰ If you supervise on covered sites and do not hold this card, treat it as a separate task from renewal rather than something the renewal process resolves.

The One-Job Rule Starting in 2026

A renewed registration in 2026 does not carry the same practical scope it did in earlier years. Under Local Law 149 of 2021, beginning January 1, 2026, a Construction Superintendent may serve as the primary superintendent on only one job at a time, whether the project is a major or non-major building.¹¹

A narrow transition applies. If you were already assigned to multiple non-major building jobs as of December 31, 2025, you may continue those existing assignments into 2026, but you cannot take any new primary assignments while holding multiples. That exception ends on January 1, 2027, after which every superintendent must comply with the one-job limit regardless of prior assignments.¹¹ Plan job commitments around this before you renew, because a new assignment cannot land on a superintendent already locked into another primary designation.
