How to Renew Your Ohio Driver’s License: Documents, Fees, and Options

To renew an Ohio driver’s license, decide whether you want a Standard card or a REAL ID-compliant card, gather your documents, and then renew online (Standard cards only) or in person at any deputy registrar office. The fee is $30.25 for a four-year license or $59.40 for eight years, and you can renew any time before your current license expires.

Pick Your Card Type First

Ohio issues two versions of the driver’s license, and the choice changes what you have to bring and whether you can renew from home.

A Standard card is fine for driving and everyday identification, but it will not get you through a TSA airport checkpoint on its own. TSA began full REAL ID enforcement on May 7, 2025, so if you show up to fly with a Standard Ohio license and no passport or other federally accepted ID, you can be pulled aside for additional screening or denied boarding.¹

A Compliant (REAL ID) card works everywhere the Standard card does, plus at airport security and federal facilities.² The tradeoff: it requires more identity documents and cannot be renewed online. You have to visit a deputy registrar in person.

Documents You Need

Standard Card

If you already hold an Ohio license and are renewing as a Standard card, you don’t need to bring extra identity documents. Your current license is enough.² That’s why online renewal is available for this card type. If your name has changed since your last license was issued, you’ll still need to bring proof of the name change.

Compliant (REAL ID) Card

A Compliant card requires the full identity packet every time you renew. You must present originals or certified copies; the BMV will not accept photocopies or notarized copies.³ You need proof of:

Full legal name and date of birth — a certified birth certificate, valid U.S. passport, or Department of Homeland Security document.
Social Security number — your Social Security card, a W-2, or an SSA-1099. If your SSN is already on file with the BMV, a completed Form BMV 5745 can substitute.
Ohio street address — two documents from different sources, such as utility bills, bank statements, or mortgage papers.
Any name change linking your current name to the one on your birth certificate or passport — an original or certified marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order.

Non-U.S. Citizens

Non-citizens must also prove lawful presence, with the specific documents depending on immigration status. Permanent residents need a valid green card and proof of a Social Security number; students, workers, refugees, asylees, and conditional permanent residents each have different acceptable combinations.⁴ Licenses issued to non-permanent residents are limited-term, non-renewable, and non-transferable, so you’ll need current USCIS documents for each new license.

How to Renew

Online

Online renewal is open to Standard card holders whose license is current or has been expired less than six months.⁵ You can use a guest login or sign in with an OH|ID account.⁶ You verify your information, answer a short questionnaire, upload images of your current license, and pay. The new card is mailed to the address on file. Online renewal is not available if you want a Compliant card.

In Person

Walk into any deputy registrar license agency with your documents. You’ll have a new photo taken, pass a vision screening, and pay the fee.⁵ In-person renewal is required if you want a Compliant card, if your license has been expired more than six months, or if you’re otherwise ineligible to renew online.

By Mail

Ohio residents temporarily out of state — including military members, Peace Corps, and AmeriCorps VISTA participants — who aren’t eligible to renew online can request a mail-in renewal packet by contacting the BMV with their license number and mailing address.⁵ Military members and their spouses or dependents may also be exempt from knowledge and driving tests even if their license has been expired more than six months.

Fees and License Term

Fees for a standard operator license, deputy registrar service fee included:

Four-year renewal: $30.25
Eight-year renewal: $59.40⁷

Veterans with a 100% documented disability rating pay nothing to renew. Deputy registrars accept credit and debit cards, cash, checks, and money orders.

Not every driver can choose the eight-year term. Drivers 65 and older are limited to the four-year license, and drivers under 21 receive a license that expires on their 21st birthday regardless of the term requested.⁸

Vision Screening

Every in-person renewal includes a vision screening.⁹ With vision in both eyes, combined acuity of 20/40 or better earns an unrestricted license, 20/40 to 20/70 results in a daytime-only restriction, and worse than 20/70 leads to denial. With vision in one eye, the equivalent cutoffs are 20/30 and 20/60.¹⁰ Corrective lenses count. If you pass with glasses or contacts, your license will carry a corrective-lens restriction.

Failing the screening at the counter isn’t the end of it. You can get an exam from a licensed optometrist or ophthalmologist and bring the results back to the BMV, as long as the exam was completed within 90 days before you apply.⁹

When You Can Renew

You can renew any time before your license expires; there’s no waiting window.⁸ The maximum license term is eight years and 90 days from the date of issuance, so renewing very early doesn’t extend anything. The new term runs from the issue date, not from your old expiration.

If you’re between 16 and 20, your license expires on your 21st birthday no matter when it was issued. Apply within 30 days before that birthday and you’ll get the adult card design with either a four-year or eight-year term.⁸ Online renewal isn’t available more than 30 days before your 21st birthday.⁵

If Your License Has Already Expired

Ohio gives you a six-month grace window after expiration to renew without retesting. Within that window, you can renew online or at a deputy registrar the same way you would with a current license.⁵ Driving on the expired card during that window is still illegal, though. An expired license is not a valid license.

Past six months, the process resets. You’ll need a temporary permit and must pass both the written knowledge exam and the behind-the-wheel driving test, effectively starting over.⁵

Driving on an expired license is a minor misdemeanor on a first offense, carrying a fine of up to $150 and no jail. Two or more offenses within three years bumps it to a first-degree misdemeanor, which can mean up to 180 days in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.¹¹

Commercial Driver’s License

CDL renewal follows the same general path but costs more: $49.25 for four years, $97.40 for eight.⁷ CDL holders also have to keep a valid medical examiner’s certificate (Form MCSA-5875) on file with the Ohio BMV. If it lapses, you’ll need a new exam and a new certificate before your CDL stays active.¹² A hazardous materials endorsement adds a federal TSA security threat assessment with new fingerprints, generally required every five years; TSA recommends starting the process at least 60 days before you need the endorsement.¹³
