How to Renew Your Oklahoma Concealed Carry Permit Online

You can renew your Oklahoma concealed carry permit online through the OSBI Self-Service Portal, starting up to 90 days before your current Self-Defense Act (SDA) license expires. The renewal fee is $85 for a five-year term or $170 for a ten-year term, paid by credit or debit card. Oklahoma law gives you a 30-day grace period after expiration to renew; miss that window and you have to start over as a new applicant.

When You Can Renew and the 30-Day Grace Period

The renewal window opens 90 days before the expiration date printed on your license. OSBI may email a reminder to the address on file, but the deadline is yours to track.1Justia. Oklahoma Code 21-1290.5v2 – Term of License and Renewal

If the expiration date passes before you file, you have exactly 30 days to submit a renewal application. During those 30 days your license is expired and you have no SDA carry authority, but you can still renew without starting from scratch, and there is no statutory late fee.1Justia. Oklahoma Code 21-1290.5v2 – Term of License and Renewal

Once that 30-day window closes, renewal is off the table. You would have to apply as a new applicant, which means completing a firearms safety course again, visiting your county sheriff’s office in person for fingerprinting, and paying the higher $100 initial application fee instead of the $85 renewal rate.2Oklahoma Legal. What to Have Ready Before You Log In

Gather everything before you open the portal. OSBI automatically deletes incomplete applications after seven days, so starting without your documents can mean beginning again.3Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. Oklahoma Self-Defense Act Licensing On-Line Application System

  • A valid email address, where OSBI will send your confirmation and any follow-up correspondence.
  • Your current license number and Social Security number, used to verify your identity against existing records.
  • A digital color photograph taken within the last 30 days. Use a light-colored background, face the camera directly without tilting your head, and remove glasses and any head coverings. Religious or medical head coverings are allowed as long as they don’t obscure any part of your face. Make sure your hair doesn’t blend into the background, and leave room around your head for cropping.4Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. Handgun Licensing FAQs
  • Digital copies of supporting documents for any name or address change since your last license was issued, such as a marriage certificate or updated state-issued ID.

Save the photo and any documents in common formats like JPEG or PDF. Confirm your mailing address is current, because the physical card ships to whatever address you enter.

Submitting the Application and Paying

The portal walks you through the renewal in sequence. After logging in and verifying your identity, you complete the renewal form, upload your photo and any supporting documents, and move to payment.

Fees depend on the term you choose:

  • Five-year renewal: $85
  • Ten-year renewal: $170

Online payments must go through credit or debit card: Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover. If you want to pay by cashier’s check or money order, you have to use the paper renewal form instead.5Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. Once you confirm payment and submit, you’ll receive an automated confirmation email. Save it. If a question comes up later about whether you filed on time, that email is your proof.

Processing Time and Checking Status

OSBI asks that you allow 60 to 90 days for processing a complete application.5Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. Handgun Licensing – Application Instructions During that time the agency runs a background check against criminal history databases. Renewal applicants skip the fingerprint-based state and FBI searches that new applicants must complete, which can shorten the wait.1Justia. Oklahoma Code 21-1290.5v2 – Term of License and Renewal

You can check progress at the OSBI License Application Status page using your Social Security number, date of birth, and last name.6Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. Things That Can Block Your Renewal

Renewal is not automatic. OSBI runs a fresh background check every time, and several conditions will trigger a denial even if you’ve held a license for years. Mandatory preclusions under Oklahoma law include:

  • Any felony conviction under Oklahoma law, federal law, or the law of another state.
  • Certain misdemeanor convictions: assault and battery causing serious injury (or any second assault and battery conviction), aggravated assault and battery, stalking, violation of a protective order, drug possession or use offenses, and domestic abuse offenses. Drug-related misdemeanor disqualifications run for ten years from the date you complete your sentence, including probation or parole.
  • Adjudication of mental incompetency under Oklahoma or another state’s mental health laws, unless relief has been granted.
  • False or misleading statements on the renewal form, which are grounds for denial and can bring a perjury charge.

Those are the state-law preclusions.7Justia. Oklahoma Code 21-1290.10 – Mandatory Preclusions Federal disqualifiers apply on top of them, including convictions for misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence as defined under federal law, which can differ from Oklahoma’s definitions.

Medical Marijuana Cardholders Cannot Renew

This is where many Oklahoma residents run into trouble. Marijuana remains a Schedule I controlled substance under federal law, and federal law prohibits any unlawful user of a controlled substance from possessing a firearm. The state’s medical marijuana program does not override that federal prohibition.

OSBI’s guidance is explicit: if you hold an Oklahoma medical marijuana patient license, you are expected to answer “yes” to the application question about controlled substance use, and that answer will result in denial. If you already hold an SDA license and later obtain a medical marijuana card, OSBI expects you to surrender your handgun license voluntarily. Licensees later identified as cardholders will have their SDA license revoked.8Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. Oklahoma Self-Defense Act Handgun Licenses and Medical Marijuana

Lying about marijuana use on the application is a separate problem. OSBI treats false statements as perjury under Oklahoma law, and the agency can cross-reference the medical marijuana patient database.

Why the License Still Matters Under Permitless Carry

Oklahoma adopted permitless carry in 2019, so you can carry a handgun inside the state without any license as long as you are at least 21 and legally allowed to possess a firearm. But that right stops at the state line. If you travel into a state that requires a permit, you need a credential that state recognizes.9Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. A valid SDA license also serves as an alternative to the federal NICS background check at the point of sale under the Brady Act, letting a licensed dealer skip that check when you buy a firearm.11Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
