How to Renew Your Orange County Driver’s License: Steps, Fees, REAL ID

To renew your Orange County driver’s license, use Florida’s MyDMV Portal at mydmvportal.flhsmv.gov or visit one of six Orange County Tax Collector offices. The base fee is $48, and you can start as early as 18 months before the expiration date printed on your current card.¹ Since REAL ID enforcement began May 7, 2025, plan on bringing original identity documents to your next in-office renewal if you haven’t already been issued a gold-star license.²

When to Renew

Florida issues standard driver’s licenses on an eight-year cycle for drivers under 80.³ Drivers 80 and older renew every six years.⁴ You can renew any time in the 18 months before your expiration date, which gives you room to gather documents and clear up anything odd on your record.¹

If your license expires on a weekend or legal holiday, it stays valid through midnight of the next business day, and renewing that day carries no late fee. FLHSMV mails a renewal notice to your address on file at least 30 days before your birthday in the year your license expires.³

Three Ways to Renew

Online Through the MyDMV Portal

The fastest option is mydmvportal.flhsmv.gov. Florida allows online renewal every other cycle, so if you renewed online last time, you’ll need to visit an office this time. The portal tells you immediately whether you’re eligible. A $2.00 processing fee is added to the base renewal cost for online transactions.¹

Online won’t work if you need to submit REAL ID documents for the first time, since those must be presented in person. It also won’t work if FLHSMV can’t verify your Social Security number electronically.

In Person at an Orange County Tax Collector Office

Six Orange County Tax Collector locations handle driver’s license services. Appointments can be booked through octaxcol.com, and driving tests are by appointment only.⁵

Bring your documents even if you believe your REAL ID status is already on file. If the system shows a mismatch, having originals with you lets staff fix it during the visit rather than sending you back for a second appointment.

By Mail

Mail-in renewal is available when the state identifies you as eligible for a convenience renewal. The renewal notice you receive before your expiration year will spell out whether you qualify and what to send. Like online renewal, this method cannot be used for first-time REAL ID document verification.

What to Bring for REAL ID

If your current license already has a gold star in the upper corner, you have a REAL ID and the paperwork for renewal is minimal. If it doesn’t, or this is your first office visit since REAL ID enforcement began, you’ll need originals or certified copies in three categories.⁶

Proof of identity: an original birth certificate, valid U.S. passport, or naturalization papers. If your name has changed through marriage or court order, bring the documents that connect your birth name to your current name. A single marriage certificate showing both names works; if you’ve changed names more than once, bring each document in the chain.
Proof of Social Security number: an original Social Security card, W-2, or other document showing your full SSN.
Two proofs of residential address: utility bills, mortgage statements, bank statements, vehicle registrations, or insurance documents. Most must be dated within the last 60 days. A deed or lease agreement is not subject to that 60-day window.

Photocopies and digital images are not accepted for REAL ID. The FLHSMV website posts a full checklist broken down by citizenship status; checking it before your visit prevents a wasted trip.⁶

Fees

A standard Class E license renewal is $48 whether you renew online, in person, or by mail (online adds $2 in processing). A standalone motorcycle-only license renewal is also $48.⁷

Renewing after your expiration date but within 12 months adds a $15 delinquent fee to the $48. CDL endorsements are $7 each. A hazmat endorsement can run up to $100 because it includes a fingerprint-based background check.⁷

What Happens After You Submit

You leave the office (or the portal) with a temporary paper permit valid while the permanent card is manufactured. The new license arrives by mail at the address on your record within two to three weeks.¹ If the card doesn’t show up in that window, contact FLHSMV or a Tax Collector office to check the mailing address on file.

Vision Test for Drivers 80 and Older

Drivers 80 and older must pass a vision screening at every renewal, without exception. You can take the test at any driver’s license office during your renewal visit, or have a licensed ophthalmologist or optometrist administer it and submit the results electronically to FLHSMV in advance. The advance option is required if you want to renew online or by mail as a convenience renewal.⁴

If you don’t pass the in-office screening, you’ll be referred to an eye specialist to complete Form HSMV 72010. The minimum standard is 20/40 in at least one eye with corrective lenses, plus at least 130 degrees of uninterrupted horizontal visual field. Telescopic lenses do not count toward the standard. A completed form is valid for one year from the exam date.⁸

If Your License Already Expired

Within 12 months of expiration, you can still renew through the normal process by paying the $48 base fee plus the $15 delinquent fee. The state may require re-examination depending on your record.³ FLHSMV dropped the general knowledge written exam requirement for licenses expired over a year in late 2023, which makes catching up easier than it once was. If your license has been expired more than 12 months, contact a Tax Collector office before you go, because additional steps may apply.

The legal exposure grows the longer you wait. Once a license has been expired more than six months, driving becomes a criminal offense instead of a minor traffic infraction. A first conviction is a second-degree misdemeanor, a second conviction is a first-degree misdemeanor, and a third or subsequent conviction carries a mandatory minimum of 10 days in jail.⁹

One narrow relief valve: if you’re charged with driving without a valid license and you produce a license that was valid at the time of the stop, or obtain one before your court date, the clerk can dismiss the case for a $5 fee.⁹ Better than a misdemeanor on your record, but not a plan.

Active-Duty Military Stationed Out of State

Active-duty service members stationed outside Florida can request an extension that keeps a Florida license valid without renewing in person. The extension covers the service member and immediate family living with them, including a spouse and children. To qualify, submit a military affidavit and a copy of current orders to FLHSMV.¹⁰

The extension renews automatically each year and stays active until 90 days after discharge, return to Florida as a resident, or issuance of a new Florida license. When you return, you’ll need to visit an office with the standard REAL ID documents: birth certificate or passport, Social Security proof, and two items showing your Florida residential address.¹⁰
