How to Renew Your Oregon Driver’s License: Online, In Person, and Fees

To renew your Oregon driver’s license, you can go online or visit a DMV office anytime in the 12 months before your expiration date, or up to two years after. A standard Class C renewal costs $54, and the renewed license is valid for eight years from the previous expiration date.1Oregon State Legislature. Can You Renew Online

Online is the fastest route, but Oregon DMV limits it to drivers who meet every one of these conditions:2Oregon Driver & Motor Vehicle Services. Get a Driver License – Over 18

  • Your photo on file is less than nine years old, and you’re willing to keep your current photo, height, and weight.
  • You aren’t switching to a REAL ID for the first time. Renewing an existing REAL ID online is fine.
  • You don’t hold a limited-term license or have a farm or hazmat endorsement.
  • You aren’t suspended, canceled, or revoked in any state.
  • You are under 65.
  • You can pay with a debit or credit card.

Anyone 65 or older has to renew in person so DMV can screen their vision. The same goes for adding or removing endorsements or restrictions. If you qualify online, you won’t need to submit any physical documents.

Renewing at a DMV Office

Book an appointment through the DMV website before you go. Walk-in standby service exists at most offices, but appointment holders are seen first and the wait without one can be long. Bring your current license, proof of your physical address, and a payment method. You’ll give your Social Security number verbally, and DMV verifies it electronically with the Social Security Administration, so you don’t need to bring the card itself.3Oregon Department of Transportation. Proof of Identity and Address Requirements

At the counter, a DMV employee verifies your paperwork, takes a new photo, and processes payment. Drivers 65 and older complete a vision screening on the spot. You’ll leave with a temporary paper permit that acts as your legal proof of driving privileges. The plastic card arrives by mail in about 20 days.4Oregon Driver & Motor Vehicle Services. What It Costs

A standard Class C renewal is $54.5Oregon Driver & Motor Vehicle Services. Driver Licensing and ID Card Fees Add $30 for REAL ID, bringing that total to $84. DMV offices accept debit cards, credit cards, checks, and cash. Online renewals require a debit or credit card.

If your license has been expired more than two years, you skip the renewal fee entirely and pay the higher original-issue fee, because at that point you’re applying as a new driver.2Oregon Driver & Motor Vehicle Services. Get a Driver License – Over 18

Standard License or REAL ID

Decide before you start whether you want a standard Oregon license or a REAL ID. A standard license works for everyday driving, age verification, and most state-level purposes. A REAL ID looks nearly identical but carries a star in the upper corner and meets federal security standards. Since May 2025, a REAL ID or an equivalent federal document such as a passport has been required to board domestic flights and enter certain federal buildings.6Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID

Renewing a REAL ID you already have follows the standard renewal path with the extra fee tacked on. Upgrading to a REAL ID for the first time is different: you must appear in person and bring original or certified documents in three categories — one proof of identity (such as an unexpired U.S. passport, U.S. birth certificate, certificate of citizenship or naturalization, permanent resident card, or employment authorization card), two proofs of Oregon physical address from different sources, and verbal proof of your Social Security number.3Oregon Department of Transportation. Proof of Identity and Address Requirements If your current legal name doesn’t match your identity document, bring a connecting document such as a marriage certificate, court-ordered name change, or divorce decree. Phone photos of documents aren’t accepted.7Oregon Secretary of State. Oregon Administrative Rule 735-062-0031 – Proof of Residence Address for Real ID

Vision Tests and Other Exams

Oregon doesn’t require every renewing driver to take a vision test. The screening is mandatory only for drivers 65 and older, who either have their eyes checked at the DMV office or submit a Certificate of Vision completed by an ophthalmologist or optometrist within the previous six months.8Legal Information Institute. Oregon Administrative Code 735-062-0060 – Periodic Check of Drivers Eyesight Drivers under 65 aren’t routinely tested at renewal unless DMV has a specific concern about their ability to drive.

Knowledge and road tests aren’t part of a standard renewal within the two-year window. They only come back into play if your license has been expired more than two years, when you’re treated as a new applicant.2Oregon Driver & Motor Vehicle Services. Get a Driver License – Over 18

If Your License Has Already Expired

An expired Oregon license grants no driving privileges and isn’t valid evidence that you’re authorized to drive.9Oregon State Legislature. Oregon Code 807130 – Expiration Get pulled over and you can be cited. You have up to two years past your expiration date to renew without extra testing, but the window is for paperwork only. It doesn’t authorize you to drive during that time. Miss the two-year cutoff and the renewal option ends entirely: you start over as a new applicant with the knowledge test, the road skills test, and the higher original-issue fee.

Military and Living Out of State

Active-duty military personnel stationed outside Oregon can renew a standard, non-REAL ID license through the online portal, and military dependents over 18 have the same option.10Military OneSource. Oregon Military Legislation and Policies Civilians temporarily out of state can also renew online if they meet the standard eligibility rules. A first-time REAL ID is the exception in every case: there’s no remote path, so plan a trip to an Oregon DMV office if that’s what you need.
