You can start as early as 12 months before your license expires and as late as two years after, under ORS 807.150.1Oregon Public Law. When You Can Renew and What a Late Renewal Costs
The renewal window opens 12 months before your expiration date and stays open for two years after it.2Oregon Driver & Motor Vehicle Services. Get a Driver License – Over 18 Miss that two-year cutoff and you start over as a new applicant, with both the knowledge test and the driving test.
An expired license carries no driving privileges at all.3Oregon Public Law. Oregon Code 807.130 – Expiration Driving on one is a Class B traffic violation under ORS 807.010.4Oregon Public Law. Oregon Code 807.010 – Operating Vehicle Without Driving Privileges If you’re cited and then renew before your court date, the court has discretion to dismiss the charge, but the safer play is to renew before the card lapses.
Standard License or Real ID
At renewal you pick between a standard Oregon license and a Real ID-compliant one. The standard card handles everyday driving and ID. It will not get you through TSA at a domestic airport or into certain federal buildings. Real ID enforcement began May 7, 2025, so if you fly and don’t carry a passport, you want the Real ID version.5Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID
Two practical consequences follow from that choice. First, Real ID requires more paperwork: two proofs of address from two different sources and proof of lawful status in the United States, with originals or certified copies only.6Oregon Driver & Motor Vehicle Services. REAL ID Information A standard license needs just one proof of address, your Social Security number (or a certification that you don’t have one), and one identity document showing your full legal name and date of birth.7Oregon Driver & Motor Vehicle Services. Documents to Bring
For identity and date of birth, the common documents are:
- U.S. birth certificate issued by a state, territory, or the District of Columbia
- U.S. passport that has not been expired for more than five years
- Permanent resident card (Form I-551)
Other proofs are accepted; those three cover most people.9Oregon Department of Transportation. Required Identity Documentation
For proof of address, bring a utility bill, mortgage statement, property tax statement, or rental agreement. Standard license, one document. Real ID, two from different sources.6Oregon Driver & Motor Vehicle Services. REAL ID Information If your name has changed since your last license, bring the marriage certificate or court decree so DMV can update the record.
The application itself (formerly a downloadable Form 735-173) is now completed electronically at the office during your visit.10Oregon Department of Transportation. Application for Driving Privileges or Identification Card
Renewing Online
If you qualify, the DMV2U portal is the fastest route. You answer security questions, certify medical statements, upload proof of address if your address has changed in the last nine years, and pay.7Oregon Driver & Motor Vehicle Services. Driver Information
You cannot renew online if you are 65 or older, if you need a Real ID for the first time, or if the DMV has flagged your record for an in-person review.2Oregon Driver & Motor Vehicle Services. Get a Driver License – Over 18 The 65-and-older cutoff is the one that catches people, because the online system doesn’t always flag it upfront.
Renewing in Person
Book an appointment through the DMV website before you go. Walk-in waits run long and vary by office. Bring every identity, address, and legal-status document the license type requires. At the counter a clerk checks your paperwork, takes payment, snaps a new photo, and runs a vision screening. You’ll complete the electronic application at the counter, so have your legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, and current address ready and consistent with what your documents show.
What It Costs
A standard Class C renewal is $54.11Oregon Driver & Motor Vehicle Services. Vision Screening
Every in-person renewal includes a vision test. Acuity of 20/40 or better in both eyes (or one eye for monocular drivers) earns an unrestricted license. Acuity between 20/40 and 20/70 still qualifies, but the DMV adds a daylight-driving-only restriction, and may add corrective-lens or outside-mirror requirements depending on your results.12Oregon Department of Transportation. Certificate of Vision The floor for any Oregon license is 20/70 in at least one eye with a visual field of 110 degrees.13Oregon Public Law. OAR 735-062-0050 – Eyesight Check Content and Standards
Wear your glasses or contacts to the screening; the DMV tests you as you present. Failing isn’t a dead end. See an eye doctor, have them complete a Certificate of Vision (Form 24), and come back with it.
After You Renew
You leave the DMV, or finish online, with a temporary paper permit. It’s valid for 30 days and the DMV can extend it another 30 if needed.14Oregon State Legislature. Oregon Code 807.310 – Applicant Temporary Permit Rules Carry it with your old card until the new one arrives, which typically takes about three weeks.6Oregon Driver & Motor Vehicle Services. REAL ID Information If the new card doesn’t show up by then, contact the DMV. The renewed license is good for another eight years.3Oregon Public Law. Oregon Code 807.130 – Expiration
One warning if you’re flying during the wait: TSA does not accept the temporary paper license at airport security.15Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint Bring your passport or another TSA-accepted ID. This surprises people who upgrade to Real ID specifically for an upcoming trip.
If You’re 65 or Older
Drivers 65 and older must renew in person, no matter how clean the record.2Oregon Driver & Motor Vehicle Services. Get a Driver License – Over 18 The in-person requirement exists so the DMV can run the vision screening. If a clerk has reason to question your ability to drive safely, additional knowledge or road tests may be required. The license still runs eight years at the same $54 fee.
If You’re in the Military
Oregon National Guard or reserves members deployed outside the country keep valid driving privileges for 90 days after active duty ends. After discharge, you have six months to renew without penalty, and ORS 807.150 requires the DMV to process your renewal within that six-month window if you held an Oregon license when you entered service.1Oregon Public Law. Oregon Code 807.150 – Renewal Proof of Address Rules Carry your military ID with the expired license during the transition.
