How to Renew Your PA Driver’s License: Fees, REAL ID, and Steps

You can renew a Pennsylvania driver’s license online, by mail, or in person at a PennDOT driver license center or authorized messenger service. A standard four-year renewal costs $39.50. PennDOT mails a renewal notice about three months before your license expires, but you don’t have to wait for it. After your application is processed, PennDOT sends a camera card, which you take to a photo license center to have your picture taken and receive your permanent plastic license.1Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. When to Renew

A Pennsylvania driver’s license is valid for four years and expires the day after your birthday. If your birthday falls on June 15, the license expires June 16. PennDOT sends a renewal notice roughly three months out, which gives you a comfortable window to handle it.2Pennsylvania General Assembly. Pennsylvania Code 75 – Expiration and Renewal of Drivers Licenses

Drivers 65 and older can choose a two-year cycle instead of four years. You’ll renew more often, but the process is the same.1Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Renew a Driver’s License

What It Costs

  • Four-year renewal: $39.50
  • Two-year renewal (age 65+): $27.50
  • REAL ID upgrade, one-time: $30.00, added to the renewal fee

Online renewals are paid by credit or debit card. Mail-in renewals take a check or money order payable to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Messenger services charge the state fee plus their own service fee, which varies.3Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Payments and Fees

What You Need for a Standard Renewal

If nothing on your license has changed, you need very little: your current driver’s license number, your full Social Security number, and your date of birth. Those go on Form DL-143, PennDOT’s Non-Commercial Driver’s License Application for Renewal. You can download it from PennDOT or pick it up at a driver license center.4Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Application for Renewal – Non-Commercial Driver’s License

How to Renew

Online

The fastest route for most drivers is PennDOT’s online driver and vehicle services portal. Enter your license information, confirm your details, and pay by card. PennDOT then mails a camera card to your address within about 14 days.5Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Online Transactions and Payments FAQs

Online renewal is not available if you hold a commercial driver’s license, if your license has been expired for six months or more, if the information on file is no longer current, or if you hold a “valid without photo” license. In any of those cases, renew by mail or in person.6Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Driver Licenses, Learner’s Permits, and ID Cards FAQs

By Mail

Complete Form DL-143 and send it with your check or money order to:

In Person

You can walk into a PennDOT driver license center or use an authorized messenger service. Messenger services are private businesses contracted with PennDOT that can process the renewal and, in many cases, hand you the product on the spot. They charge the state fee plus their own service fee.7Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Online Messengers

The Camera Card and Photo Step

Renewing a Pennsylvania license is not a one-step process, and this is where people get tripped up. After PennDOT processes your renewal, they mail a camera card. The card acts as temporary driving authorization, and you bring it to a PennDOT photo license center to get your picture taken and pick up your permanent plastic license.8Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Find a Location

Not every PennDOT location handles photos. Use the location finder to confirm which centers near you offer photo services before you make the trip. Once your photo is taken, the center prints your license on site.

Adding REAL ID During Renewal

Federal REAL ID enforcement began on May 7, 2025. A standard Pennsylvania license is no longer accepted for boarding domestic flights, entering federal buildings, or getting onto certain military installations. You’ll need a REAL ID-compliant license (marked with a gold star) or another federally acceptable ID like a passport.9Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID

Renewal is a natural time to upgrade. The one-time $30 REAL ID fee is added to your renewal cost, and you must apply in person at a driver license center with original documents in three categories:

  • Proof of identity: a U.S. birth certificate with a raised seal or a valid, unexpired U.S. passport
  • Proof of Social Security number: your Social Security card, a W-2, an SSA-1099, or a pay stub showing all nine digits
  • Two proofs of Pennsylvania residency: utility bills, a lease, a vehicle registration card, an insurance card, or mail that has moved through the postal service

Documents must be physical originals. Electronic copies are not accepted, and you can’t add REAL ID through online or mail renewal.10Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. REAL ID Document Requirements11Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. REAL ID in Pennsylvania

If Your Name Has Changed

A name change can’t be handled online or by mail. Visit a driver license center in person with the supporting document: a marriage certificate for a name change through marriage, a certified copy of the court order for a court-ordered change, or a state-issued birth certificate with a raised seal to return to a birth name. All documents must be originals.12Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Change a Driver’s License or Photo ID Name or Address

If Your License Is Already Expired

Pennsylvania does not offer a grace period. Driving with an expired license is a summary offense, and the fine depends on how recently your license was valid:

  • Expired within the past year, with a valid license before that: $25
  • All other cases: $200

If you’re stopped and can produce a valid Pennsylvania license at the issuing authority’s office within 15 days of the violation, the charge can be dismissed.13Pennsylvania General Assembly. Pennsylvania Code 75 – Drivers Required to Be Licensed

Once a license has been expired for six months or more, online renewal is no longer available. Renew by mail or in person. If the expiration has gone on much longer, PennDOT may require additional steps before reissuing the license. Active-Duty Military and Their Families

Active-duty service members stationed outside Pennsylvania get an automatic extension on their driver’s license for the entire time they’re away. The license stays valid during active service and for 45 days after the member returns to the state or separates from the military. The same protection applies to a spouse and children.14Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Apply for a Military Status Endorsement for a Pennsylvania Driver’s License

To use the extension, the expired license must still be legible, and the service member or family member should carry documentation of active-duty status outside Pennsylvania. If a service member needs to renew while stationed away for more than 60 days and can’t visit a photo center, PennDOT can issue a photoless license.14Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
