How to Replace a Lost Driver’s License in Missouri

To replace a lost driver’s license in Missouri, you have two options: apply online through the state’s myDMV portal at mydmv.mo.gov if you qualify, or visit any Missouri Department of Revenue (DOR) license office with proof of identity and Missouri residency. You’ll complete a short affidavit, pay the standard license fee, and receive a paper temporary license valid for 45 days. Your permanent card arrives by mail within 10 to 15 business days.

Can You Replace It Online?

Missouri lets you order a duplicate online only if every one of the following is true:

  • Your current Missouri license is still valid and has more than 184 days left before it expires.
  • The DOR already has a U.S. citizenship document verification indicator in your record.
  • Your Missouri driving record meets the DOR’s evaluation criteria. Certain violations or out-of-state flags can disqualify you.
  • Your previous transaction wasn’t also done remotely. Missouri caps consecutive remote transactions, so you may be required to appear in person this time.

Non-citizens who hold USCIS-issued immigration documents must submit those documents for review and can’t use the online option without additional verification.1Missouri Department of Revenue. Documents to Bring

What you need depends on whether you want a straight replacement of a standard (non-REAL ID) license or plan to upgrade to a REAL ID-compliant card during the same visit. Decide before you go, because the paperwork differs.

Standard Duplicate

For a non-REAL ID replacement, bring one proof of identity and one proof of Missouri residency. Acceptable identity documents include a certified U.S. birth certificate, a valid U.S. passport, a Permanent Resident Card, or a Certificate of Naturalization. Residency can be shown with a utility bill, bank statement, voter registration card, or similar document listing your Missouri address.2Missouri Department of Revenue. An expired Missouri or out-of-state license also works as identity proof for a non-REAL ID application, provided it expired within the last 184 days. A photocopy of a certified birth certificate paired with a U.S. military ID or military discharge papers is accepted for non-REAL ID applicants only.2Missouri Department of Revenue. REAL ID Duplicate or First-Time Upgrade

If your lost card was already REAL ID-compliant and your documents are still on file, the DOR may not require every category again. If you’re moving to REAL ID for the first time, bring documents in four categories: identity, lawful presence, Social Security number, and Missouri residency.3Missouri Department of Revenue. Driver Licensing Checklist

The key difference from a standard duplicate is residency proof: REAL ID applicants must present two documents from two different sources showing their Missouri address, not just one.2Missouri Department of Revenue. Documents for Driver License, Nondriver ID, and Instruction Permit For the Social Security number, you can present your Social Security card, a W-2, or a pay stub showing the SSN. If your SSN was verified in the past and is already on file, current Missouri license holders can provide it verbally, though a failed electronic check against Social Security Administration records will send you back for a physical document.3Missouri Department of Revenue. Every document must be an original or a certified copy. License offices won’t accept photocopies, printouts, or images on your phone for identity, lawful status, or Social Security verification.

Upgrading during a replacement adds paperwork, but you only have to do it once. Federal REAL ID enforcement began on May 7, 2025, so you now need a REAL ID-compliant license or another accepted document, such as a valid U.S. passport, to board a domestic flight or enter certain federal facilities.4Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID If you already carry a passport and won’t use your license for federal purposes, a standard duplicate is simpler.

At the License Office

You can go to any Missouri DOR license office, not just the one that issued your original card. Along with your documents, you’ll complete Form 4676, the Affidavit of Lost, Destroyed, or Stolen License. It asks for your legal name, Social Security number, date of birth, and the identity documents you’re presenting, and you sign it under penalty of perjury. The form also has a field for an alternate mailing address if you want your replacement sent somewhere other than the address on file.5Missouri Department of Revenue. Staff will take a new photo and screen your vision. Missouri requires at least 20/40 acuity; if you need corrective lenses to reach that threshold, your license will carry a corrective-lens restriction, and vision worse than 20/160 disqualifies an applicant entirely.6Missouri Department of Revenue. 12 CSR 10-24.090 Missouri Driver License or Permit Vision Test Guidelines

What It Costs

Missouri doesn’t charge a separate replacement fee. You pay the standard license fee for the class and term you’re issued:

  • Class F, standard non-commercial: $16.50 for up to three years, $25.50 for up to six years.
  • Class E, non-commercial with chauffeur endorsement: $24 for up to three years, $33 for up to six years.
  • Class A, B, or C commercial: $29 for up to three years, $38 for up to six years.

Drivers 75 and older receive shorter-term licenses at reduced rates. A new Class F license for someone 75 or older costs $14, and renewal costs $9.7Missouri Department of Revenue. Permit/Driver License/Nondriver ID Fees

License offices accept cash, personal checks, cashier’s checks, money orders, and Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express. Card payments carry a convenience fee of 2.0% plus $0.25 per transaction.8Missouri Department of Revenue. The Missouri Driver License and Nondriver ID

After You Apply

You leave the office with a paper temporary license valid for 45 days from the date of issuance. It’s your legal driving credential in the meantime. If Your License Was Stolen

A stolen license is different from a misplaced one because your name, date of birth, and address are now in someone else’s hands. File a report with your local police department; a report creates a paper trail if fraudulent activity surfaces later. Then consider placing a free one-year fraud alert with one of the three credit bureaus (Experian, TransUnion, or Equifax), which requires businesses to verify your identity before opening new credit in your name.10IdentityTheft.gov. When Information is Lost or Exposed

If you find that someone has already used the stolen license to open accounts or make purchases, report it at IdentityTheft.gov to build a recovery plan.11Federal Trade Commission. ReportFraud.ftc.gov – FAQ A credit freeze goes further than a fraud alert by blocking new credit inquiries until you lift it. It’s free at all three bureaus.

Active-Duty Military Outside Missouri

Active-duty military members and their dependents who are temporarily out of state can replace a license by mail using Form 4317 instead of visiting an office. The form includes instructions for submitting documents and payment remotely.12Missouri Department of Revenue. Form 4317 – Mail-in Driver License Application This mail-in route isn’t available to applicants living in Missouri, who must use myDMV or a license office.

Commercial Driver’s License Replacement

Replacing a lost CDL follows the same general process: visit a license office with identity and residency documents, pay the fee, and take a new photo. Fees run higher, up to $38 for a six-year Class A, B, or C license, and you should confirm your medical certificate is current since the office may check it during the transaction.7Missouri Department of Revenue. Non-citizen CDL holders face stricter federal requirements. Under current FMCSA rules, non-domiciled CDL applicants must present an unexpired foreign passport and a valid Form I-94 showing eligible employment-based status, the state must verify immigration status through the federal SAVE system, and the transaction must be handled in person.13Federal Register.
