How to Replace a Lost Illinois Driver’s License

To replace a lost Illinois driver’s license, you have two options: order a duplicate online through the Secretary of State at apps.ilsos.gov for $5, or visit a Driver Services facility in person. The online route is faster and simpler, but it does not give you a temporary paper license, and several common situations disqualify you from using it. Which path to take depends on whether you need proof of your license right away, whether you want to upgrade to a REAL ID, and whether anything about your record or address has changed.

Order a Duplicate Online

The online system is the quickest option. You enter your Social Security number, date of birth, eye color, and zip code, pay the $5 fee by credit card, debit card, or electronic check, and the replacement ships to the address already on file.1Illinois Secretary of State. The important catch: the online system does not issue a temporary paper license, and once you complete the transaction online you cannot walk into a facility afterward to pick one up. If you need to drive legally with proof of a license before the permanent card arrives, go in person from the start.1Illinois Secretary of State. Duplicate Driver’s License or ID Card

You cannot use the online duplicate system if any of the following is true:

  • Your license is suspended, revoked, or canceled.
  • Your license is being held by a court in lieu of bail.
  • You owe a reinstatement fee.
  • Your license expires within the next 30 days.
  • You previously changed your address online or by mail.
  • You hold a license in another state.
  • You have already obtained three replacements in the past 12 months, or ten in your lifetime.
  • You need any changes to the information on the card.

If any of those apply, your only option is a Driver Services facility.1Illinois Secretary of State. Duplicate Driver’s License or ID Card

Replace It In Person

A facility visit gives you two things the online route cannot: a temporary paper license handed to you before you leave, and the ability to update your record or upgrade to a REAL ID at the same visit. Many higher-traffic locations accept or require appointments, which you can schedule on the Secretary of State’s website.3Illinois Secretary of State. Appointments

You present your documents, complete the duplicate application, and a staff member runs a quick records check. After you pay the fee, you receive a temporary paper license that is legally valid while the permanent card is produced and mailed, typically within 15 business days.2Illinois Secretary of State. Documents to Bring to the Facility

The Secretary of State sorts acceptable identification into four groups, and you need at least one original from each. Photocopies and digital images are not accepted.4Illinois Secretary of State. Document Requirements to Obtain a Driver’s License/State ID Card

  • Group A, signature: a major-brand credit or debit card, a canceled check dated within 90 days, or a current court order.
  • Group B, date of birth: a birth certificate, a U.S. passport or passport card (current or expired less than two years), or a naturalization certificate.
  • Group C, Social Security number: your Social Security card, a W-2, an SSA-1099, or a pay stub showing your name and full Social Security number.
  • Group D, Illinois residency: a utility bill, bank statement, or homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy dated within the past 90 days. One document is enough for a standard license.

Every document should show your full legal name. A mismatch between the name on a document and the name in the state’s database will slow things down.4Illinois Secretary of State. Document Requirements to Obtain a Driver’s License/State ID Card

Fees

The duplicate license fee is $5 for most drivers, and $2 for drivers aged 81 and older. The Secretary of State accepts cash, checks, and major credit and debit cards. Credit card payments carry a processor fee, while the processing fee for electronic checks is currently being waived.1Illinois Secretary of State. Duplicate Driver’s License or ID Card

If You Want to Upgrade to REAL ID at the Same Time

Replacing a lost license is a sensible time to upgrade, since you are already pulling identity documents together. REAL ID has been required for domestic air travel since May 7, 2025, so a standard Illinois license will no longer get you through a TSA checkpoint.5Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID The main added requirement is a second Group D residency document, and not every Group D item qualifies for REAL ID. Check the Secretary of State’s REAL ID checklist before your visit. A REAL ID upgrade cannot be done through the online duplicate system; it has to happen in person. If you do not fly domestically or enter federal buildings that require it, a standard replacement is fine for everyday driving.

Driving Before Your New Card Arrives

Illinois law requires every driver to carry a valid license and to show it to any officer who asks.6Illinois General Assembly. Illinois Compiled Statutes 625 ILCS 5/6-101 If you are stopped without your physical card, you can be cited. The statute does provide a defense: if you produce satisfactory evidence in court that you held a valid license at the time of the stop, the charge should not result in a conviction.7Illinois General Assembly. Illinois Compiled Statutes 625 ILCS 5/6-112 Your replacement receipt or temporary paper license can serve as that evidence.

That defense only covers the situation where your license was valid but not physically with you. Driving on a suspended, revoked, or expired license is a separate and far more serious offense, chargeable as a Class A misdemeanor carrying up to a year in jail.

Illinois also offers a mobile driver’s license through Apple Wallet for iPhone and Apple Watch users. The Secretary of State explicitly notes it is not a replacement for a physical ID, and some law enforcement interactions still require the physical card.8Illinois Secretary of State. ID in Apple Wallet It may help in certain situations while you wait, but do not treat it as your only backup.

If You Think It Was Stolen, Not Just Lost

A lost license is an inconvenience. A stolen one is a potential identity theft problem, because it carries your name, date of birth, address, and a unique identification number. If you suspect theft, take a few steps beyond ordering the replacement.

File a police report. It creates a paper trail that proves when the theft occurred, which matters if someone later opens accounts or commits fraud using your information. The Illinois Attorney General’s Identity Theft Hotline, at 1-866-999-5630, offers one-on-one guidance on reporting the theft to financial institutions and repairing your credit.9Illinois Attorney General. You can also place a fraud alert or credit freeze with the three major credit bureaus. A fraud alert only requires contacting one bureau, which must then notify the other two. A credit freeze is stronger but requires contacting Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion individually. Both are free and can block someone from opening new credit in your name.10Federal Trade Commission. Credit Freezes and Fraud Alerts A police report is not a legal prerequisite for getting your replacement license; the duplicate statute only requires satisfactory evidence that the original was lost.11Illinois General Assembly.
