How to Replace a Lost Louisiana Driver’s License

To replace a lost Louisiana driver’s license, request a duplicate online at expresslane.org or visit a local Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) office. The total is $17: a $5 duplicate fee plus a $12 handling charge.1Justia Law. Louisiana Revised Statutes Title 32 RS 32-413 – Loss or Destruction of Licenses; Duplicate Drivers License2Justia Law. Louisiana Revised Statutes Title 32 RS 32-412.1 – Handling Charges Both fees are waived if your license was stolen and you file a police report. Online is faster if your address hasn’t changed and you aren’t upgrading to REAL ID; otherwise you need to go in person.

Replace It Online

The quickest route is the OMV’s duplicate credential request at expresslane.org. Enter your license information, pay with a credit card, and print the receipt that confirms the transaction. The replacement card is mailed to the address on file.3Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. Duplicate Credential Request

Two conditions limit the online option. Your mailing address must match what’s already on your license, because address changes can’t be processed through the portal. And you can’t add a REAL ID indicator online. If either applies, visit an OMV office.3Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. Duplicate Credential Request

If you already had a REAL ID-compliant license and only need a duplicate with no changes, the online process works and your replacement will keep the REAL ID indicator.

Replace It at an OMV Office

Walk-ins are accepted, but booking an appointment through expresslane.org cuts your wait time. Payment at OMV offices is accepted by credit card, cash, and money order.

If you’re also upgrading to REAL ID, bring documents in several categories:

  • Proof of identity, such as a U.S. passport, birth certificate, or another government-issued photo ID.
  • Social Security verification, such as your Social Security card or a W-2 form.
  • Proof of Louisiana residency, such as a utility bill, lease, mortgage statement, or bank statement showing your name and current address.
  • Proof of auto insurance, such as a current insurance card or declaration page.

These categories trace to the federal REAL ID Act, which requires states to verify identity, Social Security number, lawful status, and principal residence before issuing a compliant license.4Department of Homeland Security. What It Costs and Who Pays Less

The $5 duplicate fee is set by statute, and the $12 handling charge applies to all license transactions, so $17 is the standard total.1Justia Law. Louisiana Revised Statutes Title 32 RS 32-413 – Loss or Destruction of Licenses; Duplicate Drivers License2Justia Law. Louisiana Revised Statutes Title 32 RS 32-412.1 – Handling Charges Online transactions may add a processing fee.

Two groups don’t pay the $5 duplicate fee: people whose licenses were stolen (with a police report as proof) and foster children. For a stolen license, both the $5 fee and the $12 handling charge are waived, so file the police report before you apply.1Justia Law. Louisiana Revised Statutes Title 32 RS 32-413 – Loss or Destruction of Licenses; Duplicate Drivers License

There is no financial-hardship waiver in the statute.

If Your License Was Stolen

Someone holding your license has your full name, date of birth, address, and license number, which makes a stolen card an identity theft problem on top of a replacement errand. In addition to filing the police report:

  • Create an identity theft report and recovery plan at identitytheft.gov, or call 1-877-438-4338.6IdentityTheft.gov. When Information is Lost or Exposed
  • Place a free fraud alert with any one of the three major credit bureaus; that bureau must notify the other two.
  • Watch your accounts for unfamiliar charges, new accounts, or address changes you didn’t make.

Should You Upgrade to REAL ID While You’re At It?

Since May 7, 2025, non-REAL ID licenses are no longer accepted at TSA airport checkpoints, so a replacement is a reasonable moment to upgrade.8Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint A REAL ID-compliant license carries a star in the upper corner and requires the full set of identity, residency, and Social Security documents listed above.

Upgrading means going in person so the OMV can verify your originals. Louisiana currently waives the $5 duplicate fee when you upgrade to REAL ID before your regular renewal date, though you still pay the $12 handling charge. The waiver is set to expire on June 30, 2026.9Louisiana State Legislature. Louisiana Code 32-413 – Loss or Destruction of Licenses; Duplicate Drivers License

Bridge the Gap With LA Wallet

Louisiana’s LA Wallet app puts a digital version of your license on your phone. It doesn’t replace the need to order a physical duplicate, but it can carry you through the wait for the mailed card.

LA Wallet is accepted at TSA checkpoints with CAT-2 identity verification technology, including Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport and more than 250 other checkpoints nationwide.10Transportation Security Administration. Participating States and Eligible Digital IDs TSA still recommends carrying a physical ID as backup, and the digital license must be based on a REAL ID-compliant credential to be used at airport security.

Driving While You Wait for the Card

Louisiana requires every driver to carry a valid license while operating a vehicle on public roads.11Louisiana State Legislature. Louisiana Code 32-52 – Driver Must Be Licensed A first offense carries a fine of up to $175 or up to 30 days in jail, or both. A subsequent offense increases to a fine of up to $500 or up to 90 days in jail, or both.12Louisiana State Legislature. Louisiana Code 32-57 – Penalties; Alternatives to Citation

Losing your license is not the same as having it suspended. Your license is still valid on OMV records, and driving on a suspended or revoked license is a separate, more serious offense carrying fines up to $500 and up to six months of imprisonment.13Louisiana State Legislature. Louisiana Code 32-1023 – Penalties If you’re stopped without the physical card, the officer has discretion on citing you, and showing proof that your replacement is in progress helps.

CDL Holders Have More to Watch

Commercial drivers face steeper consequences for being caught without the card. A second offense within three years brings a 60-day disqualification from operating any commercial vehicle. A third within that window extends the disqualification to 120 days.14eCFR. 49 CFR 383.51 – Disqualification of Drivers One safety valve: if you can show the citing officer or the court that you held a valid CDL on the date of the stop, the offense is dismissed.

Federal rules also require CDL drivers to keep a valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate on file with the state. If your medical certificate has lapsed or wasn’t properly reported to the OMV, your commercial driving privileges may be downgraded during the replacement process even if the CDL itself is still valid.15FMCSA – Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Medical Check your medical certificate status before you apply so a replacement doesn’t turn into a downgrade.
