Replacing a lost Virginia driver’s license costs $20 and, in most cases, takes only a few minutes through the DMV’s online portal. If you can’t use the online option, any Virginia DMV customer service center can issue the replacement in person. And if your license expires within a year, skip the replacement and renew instead. Here is how to replace a lost Virginia driver’s license, along with the details that decide which route applies to you.
Replace It Online
The fastest route is the DMV’s online replacement portal. You verify your identity, confirm your address, and pay by credit card, debit card, or electronic withdrawal from a bank account.1Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Replace Driver’s License or CDL
You can update your address during the same transaction, so a separate trip for that isn’t necessary.1Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Replace Driver’s License or CDL

While You Wait for the Card
After an online replacement, the DMV instructs you to print your receipt and carry it until the physical card arrives. Allow at least 15 days for delivery before contacting the DMV about a missing card.1Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Replace Driver’s License or CDL
The printed receipt isn’t a driver’s license, but it shows you’ve applied and gives law enforcement a way to verify your driving record. Carrying a second form of photo ID during those 15 days is a sensible backup.
Do You Need a Police Report?
Not for a simple loss. The Virginia DMV doesn’t require a police report before replacing your license, so if you just misplaced it, order the replacement and move on.
Theft is different. If your wallet was stolen or you suspect your license is being used fraudulently, a police report creates a paper trail that helps you dispute unauthorized transactions, contest fraudulent citations, and show you weren’t behind any misuse.
If You Get Pulled Over Before the Card Arrives
Virginia law requires every driver to hold a valid license. Driving without one, whether because you lost it, let it expire, or never had it, is a Class 2 misdemeanor on a first offense, and a Class 1 misdemeanor on a second or later violation. A judge can also suspend your driving privileges for up to 90 days after a conviction.7Virginia Code Commission. Virginia Code 46.2-300 – Driving Without License Prohibited; Penalties
There’s an important out for someone who actually holds a valid license and simply didn’t have the card. Courts have discretion to dismiss the charge entirely if you appear with proof that you hold a valid license before your court date.7Virginia Code Commission. Virginia Code 46.2-300 – Driving Without License Prohibited; Penalties That is the strongest reason to order your replacement the day you notice the license is gone. The printed DMV receipt helps at the roadside, and the replacement card in hand is what resolves it in court.
