To replace a driver’s license in Illinois, you can either apply online through the Secretary of State at ilsos.gov or visit a Driver Services facility in person. Online works for most people whose license is simply lost or damaged and still in good standing. In person is required if you’re not eligible online, if your license was stolen and you want to handle it face to face, or if you’re upgrading to REAL ID at the same time. Either way, you’ll need your license number, date of birth, and Social Security number to get started.
Who Qualifies to Replace Online
The online duplicate option is open to most Illinois drivers, but not all. You can’t use it if:
- Your license is suspended, revoked, or canceled.
- You hold a driver’s license in another state.
- You’ve already received three replacement licenses in the past 12 months.
If any of those apply, you’ll need to go to a Driver Services facility instead.1Illinois Secretary of State. Duplicate Driver’s License or ID Card Your license also needs to still be valid. If it recently expired, the transaction becomes a renewal rather than a duplicate.
How to Replace Your License Online
Go to ilsos.gov and open the duplicate driver’s license option under driver services. You’ll enter your Illinois license number, your date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security number. The system pulls up your record and walks you through confirming your address and personal details, so no physical documents are needed.1Illinois Secretary of State. Pay the fee with a credit or debit card. Save or print the confirmation once payment goes through. Your new card comes by mail, so make sure the address on file is current before you submit.
Replacing Your License at a Driver Services Facility
If you’re not eligible online, or you’d rather handle it in person, find your nearest Driver Services location through the facility finder at ilsos.gov.2Illinois Secretary of State. DMV Facility Locations Many locations now require appointments, so check before you go.
Bring documents in three categories:
- Proof of identity, such as a U.S. birth certificate, U.S. passport, or permanent resident card.
- Proof of your Social Security number, such as your Social Security card, a W-2, or a pay stub showing the full number.
- Two proofs of Illinois residency with your current address, such as a utility bill, bank statement, or lease.
A new photo is taken at the facility. You’ll pay the replacement fee and leave with a temporary paper license. Most visits run about 20 to 30 minutes, though wait times vary.
Your Temporary License and When the New Card Arrives
The temporary paper license issued at the facility is valid for up to 90 days.3Legal Information Institute. Your permanent card should arrive in the mail within about two to three weeks. If it doesn’t, contact the Secretary of State’s office to check the status.
Flying Before Your New Card Arrives
TSA does not accept a temporary paper driver’s license at airport security checkpoints.4Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint If you have travel planned, use a U.S. passport, passport card, or military ID instead. Without one of those, TSA may still verify your identity through alternative procedures, but you should expect delays and no guarantee of getting through.
Should You Upgrade to REAL ID at the Same Time?
If your current license doesn’t have a gold star in the upper-right corner, it isn’t REAL ID-compliant. Replacing a lost or damaged card is a natural moment to upgrade, because the visit and document requirements overlap. Federal REAL ID enforcement began on May 7, 2025, under a phased approach that runs through May 5, 2027.5Federal Register. You can’t upgrade to REAL ID online. Plan for an in-person visit and bring:
- An original or certified proof of identity, such as a U.S. birth certificate, U.S. passport, or permanent resident card.
- Proof of your Social Security number, such as your Social Security card, a W-2, or a pay stub.
- Two proofs of Illinois residency, such as utility bills, a bank statement, a mortgage statement, or a lease.

Extra Steps If Your License Was Stolen
A stolen license carries your name, date of birth, address, and photo, which is enough for someone to open accounts in your name. Treat it as an identity theft risk on top of a lost card.
File a Police Report
The Illinois Secretary of State recommends filing a police report as soon as you realize your license was stolen. Use your local police department’s non-emergency line or go to the station. The report creates an official record you can point to later if fraudulent accounts or charges appear.
Protect Your Credit
Place a fraud alert with any one of the three major credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion. Whichever one you contact is required to notify the other two. For stronger protection, place a credit freeze with each bureau. A freeze blocks new credit accounts from being opened until you lift it, and freezes are free to place and lift. If You’re Military and Stationed Out of State
Active-duty service members, their spouses, and dependent children living with them can defer the expiration of an Illinois driver’s license for up to 120 days after discharge or reassignment back to an Illinois base. The deferral also covers civilian Department of Defense employees. The printed expiration date can pass without your license actually expiring while you’re serving.
You can still use the online duplicate option from out of state as long as you meet the standard eligibility rules and haven’t already had three replacements in the past year. Anything that requires an in-person visit, including a REAL ID upgrade, will have to wait until you’re back in Illinois or on leave.
