How to Replace Your Driver’s License in Oregon

To replace your driver’s license in Oregon, use the DMV2U online portal or visit a DMV field office, pay the $30 fee, and drive on the interim card until the permanent one arrives in the mail within about 20 days.¹ Online is faster and works for most same-for-same replacements. An office visit is required if you’re upgrading to REAL ID, changing your name or address on the card, updating your photo, or coming back from a suspension.² Move quickly either way: driving without a license on you is a Class C misdemeanor in Oregon, even when your driving privileges are otherwise valid.³

Replacing Online Through DMV2U

The fastest route is DMV2U.Oregon.gov. You’ll answer security questions, confirm your personal details, pay the $30 fee by debit or credit card, and print an interim card on the spot.² The whole thing takes a few minutes.

Online replacement is only available if you meet every one of these conditions: the DMV has a photo of you on file less than nine years old, you’re keeping that photo and your current physical description, you don’t want to add REAL ID, you’re not suspended or revoked in any state, and you don’t hold a limited-term license.⁴ Miss any of those and you’re going to an office.

When You Need to Go to a DMV Office

Plan on an in-person visit if you’re upgrading to a REAL ID, want a new photo, are changing your name or address on the card, or are getting your license back after a suspension.² Book an appointment through the scheduler on DMV2U. Standby walk-in service is offered too, but wait times can be unpredictable, so an appointment is worth the few minutes it takes to set up.⁵

At the office, you complete the application electronically, present your documents, pay the fee, and leave with an interim card the same day.

Documents to Bring

For a simple same-for-same online replacement, payment may be all you need if your DMV record is current. For an office visit, or if your records are out of date, be ready to prove identity, date of birth, and lawful status.²

Oregon accepts a wide range of documents as proof of your residence address: utility statements, mortgage or rental agreements, bank statements, insurance cards, pay stubs, W-2 forms, voter notification cards, and mail delivered by USPS, FedEx, or UPS from a verifiable business or government agency. At least one document must show your current name and address.⁶ Bring originals, not photocopies.

Standard Card or REAL ID

Replacement is a natural moment to decide whether you want a standard license or a REAL ID. A standard Oregon card works for driving and everyday identification but will not get you through a TSA checkpoint or into most federal buildings. REAL ID enforcement began on May 7, 2025.⁷

If you already carry a U.S. passport and don’t need your license for federal purposes, a standard replacement saves you the extra $30. If your license is your only government photo ID and you fly domestically, the REAL ID upgrade is worth the extra step. You can spot a REAL ID by the gold star in the upper corner of the card.

Upgrading to REAL ID means going in person with an original identity and lawful-status document, such as an unexpired U.S. passport or passport card, a U.S. birth certificate, a certificate of naturalization, or a permanent resident card. You’ll also need a verifiable Social Security number; the DMV checks it directly with the Social Security Administration, and the name on your SSN record must match your current legal name. If they don’t match, update the SSA record first or the verification will fail.⁸

A first-time REAL ID also needs two printed proofs of address from different sources, such as a utility bill and a bank statement, or a lease and a pay stub. Replacing an existing REAL ID with no changes is lighter, since your records are already on file.⁸

Replacement Fees

Oregon charges a flat $30 to replace a standard Class C driver’s license. Adding REAL ID compliance is another $30, for a total of $60.¹ Online payment is by debit or credit card; DMV offices accept additional payment methods.

If your permanent card never shows up and the DMV has to reissue it through no fault of yours, you can request a no-fee reissue. You have to wait at least 20 days and no more than 70 days from the original issue date to qualify.²

Your Interim Card and the Wait

Whether you apply online or in person, you get an interim card immediately. It’s a paper document that stands in for your license while the plastic card is produced and mailed. Allow up to 20 days for delivery. If nothing has arrived after 20 days, check your card status on DMV2U.⁹

The interim card has a real limit: many agencies and businesses won’t accept it as identification. The TSA and the Social Security Administration both explicitly reject it.⁹ If you have a flight or a federal appointment during the wait, bring a passport.

If Your License Was Stolen

A stolen license is more than an inconvenience. Your card carries your full name, date of birth, address, and photo, which is most of what someone needs to open accounts in your name. Alongside the DMV replacement, Oregon DMV recommends these steps if you’re a victim of identity theft:¹⁰

File a police report with local law enforcement so the theft is documented if the license is later used for fraud.
Notify your bank and creditors so they can flag suspicious activity.
Report to the FTC at IdentityTheft.gov or 877-438-4338 for a recovery plan tailored to your situation.
Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to place fraud alerts, and consider a credit freeze.¹¹

A new card doesn’t neutralize the risk from the stolen one, so handle the identity-protection steps in parallel.

Changing Your Name at the Same Time

If you’ve had a recent name change through marriage, divorce, or court order, a replacement is a natural time to update the card. Name changes require an in-person visit. Bring proof of the legal change, such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order, along with proof of identity and address.¹²

For a REAL ID, the name on your license has to match what the SSA has on file. If you haven’t updated Social Security yet, do that first or the DMV’s electronic verification will fail and you’ll leave without a card. Standard cardholders have more flexibility, since the DMV can verify your Social Security number under a different name as long as you provide documents connecting them.¹²

If Your License Is Suspended, Revoked, or Canceled

You cannot replace a license that has been suspended, revoked, or canceled. Once any of those actions is in effect, you must surrender the license and stop driving until you complete the reinstatement process.¹³ After you clear whatever triggered the action, whether that’s paying fines, completing a diversion program, or meeting an insurance requirement, the DMV issues a replacement card at the same $30 fee.¹

Commercial Driver’s Licenses

CDL holders follow the same broad process with extra requirements. Online CDL replacement through DMV2U is available if you meet the same eligibility criteria as standard drivers: current photo on file, no REAL ID upgrade, no endorsement changes, and no suspensions.⁴

In person, you’ll state the type of commercial driving you do and confirm whether you meet federal operating requirements. If your CDL requires medical certification, valid medical documentation must already be on your DMV record. Drivers with a hazardous materials endorsement face additional TSA screening, including proof of citizenship or immigration status.⁴ CDL replacement fees are separate from Class C fees, so check the DMV’s CDL fee schedule for current amounts.
