Replacing your Oklahoma driver’s license costs $25 and can be done online through Service Oklahoma or in person at a licensed operator, as long as your current license hasn’t been expired for more than three years. The documents you’ll need depend on whether you’re also updating your name or address, and whether you want the replacement to be REAL ID-compliant.
What to Bring
Oklahoma requires at least one valid identity document for a replacement. If your existing Oklahoma license or state ID hasn’t been expired for more than three years, that credential alone may satisfy the identity requirement. Without a current credential, bring an original or certified birth certificate, a valid U.S. passport, or another document from Service Oklahoma’s approved list.
You also need to verify your Social Security number. A Social Security card, a W-2, or an SSA-1099 works.
If your home address has changed since your last license was issued, bring two documents showing your new residential address. Each must include your name and current address. Recent utility bills dated within the last 60 days, a bank or credit card statement, an active residential lease, a mortgage document, or a homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy all qualify.1Service Oklahoma. Senate Bill 19 eliminated the old two-tier system of primary and secondary identification documents, so the current list is simpler than what longtime Oklahoma drivers may remember.
Replacing Online
The fastest route for most people is the Service Oklahoma online portal. You’re eligible if you already hold a valid Oklahoma driver’s license that hasn’t been expired for more than three years. The system lets you confirm your personal information, update your address, and pay the fee without visiting an office. Rather than uploading scanned documents, Service Oklahoma verifies your information against existing state records.
The online channel has real limits. Name changes cannot be processed remotely. If your license has been expired for more than three years, you can’t use the replacement process at all, online or in person. And if you upgrade to REAL ID compliance for the first time, that has to happen in person too.
Online applicants don’t receive a temporary paper permit. The permanent card ships to the address on file. If you need something to carry in the meantime, go in person instead.
Replacing In Person
Licensed operators, formerly known as tag agents, handle driver’s license replacements at more than 270 locations across all 77 Oklahoma counties.2Service Oklahoma. Expanded In-Person Services are Now Offered at Licensed Operators Service Oklahoma Licensing and Exam locations also process replacements without appointments. A live wait-time feature on the Service Oklahoma website lets you check in online and see current wait times before heading out.
Bring your identity documents and payment. Staff verify your documents, take a new photo, and issue a temporary paper license on the spot. That temporary credential is legally valid for driving and serves as identification until your permanent card arrives.
Go in person if any of these apply: you need a name change, you’re upgrading to REAL ID compliance for the first time, you’re a noncitizen, or you want a temporary paper license immediately.
The $25 Fee
The statutory replacement fee is $25.00 for any class of license.3Justia Law. Licensed operators and Service Oklahoma offices generally accept cash, checks, and debit or credit cards, though individual offices may vary. Online payments go through a secure payment gateway using a credit card or electronic check.
Your Temporary Permit and Permanent Card
An in-person application gets you a temporary paper license valid for driving immediately. Law enforcement recognizes it as legitimate proof of licensure, so keep it accessible whenever you drive. It carries the same information that will appear on your permanent card.
Your permanent plastic license is manufactured at a central facility and mailed to the address on your application. Service Oklahoma doesn’t publish a guaranteed delivery window, but most applicants receive their card within a few weeks. If it hasn’t arrived after about 30 days, contact Service Oklahoma to verify the mailing status and confirm your address. A wrong digit in a zip code or an outdated apartment number is the most common reason cards go missing.
Oklahoma previously offered a mobile ID app, but that app has been decommissioned, so a digital license isn’t an option while you wait.
Name Changes
If your name has changed due to marriage, divorce, adoption, or a court order, you must provide a certified document proving each name change in the chain from your identity document to your current legal name. Acceptable documents include an official marriage certificate, a divorce decree, a court-ordered name change, or a valid U.S. passport reflecting the new name.1Service Oklahoma. Updating Your Address
You can update your address as part of an online replacement. Enter your new address during the process, and the new card is mailed to your new home. If you also need a name change, handle both in person.
Stolen Licenses
Oklahoma doesn’t require a police report to process a replacement for a stolen license. The process is the same whether your license was lost, stolen, or damaged. Filing a police report is still smart if you suspect identity theft, because whoever holds your license has your full name, date of birth, address, and photo.
If Your License Has Been Expired More Than Three Years
A replacement is only available if your license hasn’t been expired for more than three years. Beyond that window, Oklahoma treats you as a new applicant. You’ll need to retake the written and vision tests and apply for a fresh license. If your license is close to expiring anyway, a renewal makes more sense than a replacement, since renewal resets your expiration date while a replacement carries the original one forward.3Justia Law. Non-U.S. Citizens
Noncitizens must appear in person and provide proof of authorized presence in the United States. Your replacement license will expire on either your current license’s expiration date or the expiration of your authorized stay, whichever comes first.3Justia Law. Should Your Replacement Be REAL ID?
Federal REAL ID enforcement began on May 7, 2025. You now need a REAL ID-compliant license or a valid passport to board domestic flights and enter federal facilities.5Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID If your current Oklahoma license already carries the gold star, your replacement will too. If it doesn’t and you want to upgrade, you’ll need the full REAL ID document set: proof of identity, proof of Social Security number, and two proofs of Oklahoma residency, and you’ll need to appear in person.
The fee is $25 either way. The only real difference is the paperwork you bring, so if you plan to fly or enter federal buildings and your old license wasn’t compliant, handle it during this replacement rather than making a second trip later.
