Replace It Online If You Qualify

The SCDMV’s online portal is the fastest route. Log in, choose the replacement option, confirm your information, and pay by credit or debit card. No branch visit, no paperwork to bring.

Three things can push you out of the online lane:

Replace It in Person at an SCDMV Branch

Bring documents from three categories:

  • One proof of identity, such as a valid U.S. passport or an original or certified birth certificate.

A Name Change Is Not a Replacement

If your name has changed because of marriage, divorce, or a court order, don’t try to fold that into a duplicate. You must visit an SCDMV branch in person and bring the marriage license or court order along with your other documents. It’s a separate transaction, not something the online replacement or a routine duplicate covers.

Should You Upgrade to a REAL ID While You’re There

If you’re going into a branch anyway, consider making the replacement a REAL ID. What Happens After You Apply

The SCDMV issues a temporary paper certificate right away, whether you applied online or at a counter. Driving Before the New Card Arrives
