What Happens After You File

The Welfare Investigation Unit reviews the report and decides whether to open a formal case. Cases with enough evidence are referred for an administrative disqualification hearing, and investigators can look back up to 72 months when calculating any overpayment.⁴ Federal rules require the state to give the accused person written notice at least 30 days before the hearing, and the state has 90 days from that notification to hold the hearing and decide the case.⁵

You will not get updates. Privacy laws bar DSS from telling a reporter what is happening in someone else’s benefits case, and that is true whether you left your name or not.
