How to Request a Car Title in Florida: Duplicate and Paper Copies

To request a car title in Florida, you file with your county tax collector’s office, either in person or by mail. The cost depends on which request you actually need. If your title is simply held electronically by the state and you want a paper copy, the fee runs from $2.50 by mail to $10 for a same-day printed title. If your paper title was lost, stolen, or damaged and you need a true duplicate, the fee is $75.25. Florida does not accept duplicate title applications online.

First, Figure Out Which Request You Need

Since January 2013, Florida stores all vehicle titles electronically by default.¹ If you paid off a car loan and never asked for a printed title, you almost certainly have an active electronic title on file. That electronic record is valid proof of ownership. You only need a paper copy when you sell the vehicle, trade it in, use it as loan collateral, or move it to another state.²

A duplicate is different. You need a duplicate title when you previously had a paper title in hand and it’s gone, or when a dealer or private seller never delivered the original paper title after your purchase. The duplicate process voids the old paper document, which protects you if the missing one turns up in someone else’s hands.

Two conditions to check before you spend anything. If your vehicle still has an active lien, the title stays electronic until the lien is satisfied, and you cannot convert it to paper.² And if your title was recently issued but never reached you in the mail, you may qualify for a free replacement rather than a paid duplicate. You must apply within 180 days of the issuance date, and at least 20 days must have passed since it was mailed.³ Past 180 days, the standard duplicate fee applies.

Converting an Electronic Title to Paper

If the state is holding your title electronically and there’s no lien, you’re not asking for a duplicate. You’re asking for a print. Florida gives you three ways to do it:

Online through the MyDMV Portal for $4.50. The paper title arrives by mail in about three to four weeks. You can’t pick it up or print it at home.²
By mail to your county tax collector for $2.50. Include a photocopy of your valid photo ID and a written request to print the electronic title. Three to four weeks to arrive.²
In person at a county tax collector’s office for $10. This is called a fast title, and the printed document is handed to you the same day.²

Fast title is worth the extra cost if you’re mid-sale or need the document quickly. Call your local tax collector’s office first to confirm they offer same-day printing.

Requesting a Duplicate Title

The form is HSMV 82101, titled “Application for Duplicate or Lost in Transit/Reassignment for a Motor Vehicle, Mobile Home or Vessel Title Certificate.” Download it from the FLHSMV website or pick up a copy at any tax collector’s office.³ It asks for your full legal name, mailing address, the vehicle identification number, and lienholder details. If there’s no lien, write “none” in that section.

The total fee is $75.25. That’s a $70 base title fee, a $1 security materials surcharge, and a $4.25 service charge.⁴ Add $2.50 for shipping and handling if you want it mailed rather than picking it up.⁵

Licensed private tag agencies charge their own service fee on top of the state fees. Florida law lets tax collectors authorize these agencies to set that amount, and the charge must be itemized for you before you pay.⁴ Ask first.

Documents to Bring

Along with Form 82101 and payment, you’ll need:

A valid, unexpired photo ID. A driver license or identification card from any state, or a passport.⁶
Proof of ownership if the original title was never received. A bill of sale works. Florida’s official bill of sale is Form HSMV 82050, and a valid one includes the vehicle’s year, make, model, body type, color, VIN, existing title number if available, buyer and seller information and signatures, sale date, price, and an odometer disclosure for motor vehicles.⁷
A lien satisfaction letter from your lender if a lien was recently paid off.

If someone else will handle the request for you, Florida accepts a general or limited power of attorney, but it must be signed in front of two witnesses and notarized.⁸

Where and How to Submit

You have two submission options for a duplicate title: in person or by mail. The MyDMV Portal does not accept duplicate title applications, only electronic-to-paper conversions for titles that were never lost or damaged.²

In Person

Take Form 82101, your supporting documents, and payment to any Florida county tax collector’s office or licensed tag agency. Staff review everything on the spot and can flag problems immediately. Most offices accept cash, checks, and credit or debit cards. To leave with the title printed the same day, ask for a fast title and pay the additional $10.⁵

By Mail

Mail Form 82101, a photocopy of your valid photo ID, and a check or money order to your local county tax collector’s office. The form itself directs you to submit it to the tax collector, not to FLHSMV headquarters in Tallahassee.³ Use certified mail so you have a delivery record. Office addresses are listed at flhsmv.gov/offices.

How Long It Takes

A fast title in person is same-day. Any other submission arrives by mail in roughly two to four weeks. The title is mailed from FLHSMV in Tallahassee to the address on your motor vehicle record, so update that address before you apply if it’s out of date.

If four weeks pass and nothing arrives, contact the tax collector’s office where you filed. For mailed submissions, your certified mail receipt helps trace where things stalled. If the new duplicate itself was lost in the mail, file another Form 82101 as a lost-in-transit request at no charge, as long as you’re within 180 days of the issuance date.³

Two Situations With Different Rules

If the titled owner has died, you are not filing Form 82101. You’re transferring the title into a surviving spouse’s or heir’s name using Form HSMV 82040, along with a death certificate and, in many cases, an affidavit that the estate has no outstanding debts. Probate is not always required, but it can become necessary if heirs disagree.⁹
