To schedule a driver’s test in Maryland, book a Non-Commercial Driver’s Skills Test appointment through the Motor Vehicle Administration’s Central Scheduling System at mymva.maryland.gov, or call the MVA at 1-800-950-1682. Confirm You’re Eligible to Book
The scheduling system checks your record against the MVA’s prerequisites. Miss one and you won’t get an appointment, so run through this list first.
Age and Permit Holding Period
You must be at least 16 years and 6 months old to test for a provisional license.2Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration. Rookie Driver – Provisional License You also need to have held your Maryland learner’s permit for a minimum period that depends on your age:
- Under 18 without a high school diploma or equivalent: 9 months
- 18 with a high school diploma or equivalent: 3 months
- 19 to 24: 3 months
- 25 and older: 45 days

Driver Education
Every new Maryland driver, at any age, must finish a certified driver education program: 30 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with an approved provider.4Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration. Supervised Practice Hours
You also need documented practice with a supervising driver who is at least 21 and has held a valid license for at least three years:
- Under 18: 60 hours of practice, including 10 hours at night
- 18 and older: 14 hours of practice, including 3 hours at night

One boundary worth flagging: if you already have a valid Maryland learner’s permit, you cleared the vision screening and written knowledge test when you got it, and you can go straight to booking the skills test. Documents to Have Ready
Gather these before you sit down to book, because you’ll need them at the appointment and it’s easier to spot a gap now than the morning of:
- Proof of identity: an original U.S. birth certificate or valid U.S. passport
- Proof of Social Security number: your original Social Security card or a W-2 form
- Two proofs of Maryland residency, such as utility bills, bank statements, or a vehicle registration card
- Your driver education certificate of completion
- The completed Rookie Driver Practice Guide with the signed certification page

Book the Appointment
Online
The fastest way is the MVA’s Central Scheduling System at mymva.maryland.gov. Have your learner’s permit number in front of you. Then:
- Select Non-Commercial Driver’s Skills Test as the appointment type.
- Pick the MVA branch closest to you.
- Choose an open date and time from the calendar.
- Enter your personal and permit information to confirm the booking.
Save the confirmation number the system gives you. You’ll need it to reschedule or cancel, and you have to bring it on test day.
By Phone
If you’d rather speak to someone, call the MVA Customer Service Center at 1-800-950-1682. Have your permit number and personal details ready so the representative can pull your record and offer open slots. You’ll get the same confirmation you’d get online.
Rescheduling or Canceling
If you need to move the appointment, log back into the scheduling system and choose a new date; the old slot cancels automatically once the new one is confirmed. Showing up late can forfeit the appointment, so reschedule in advance rather than gamble on traffic.
What to Bring on Test Day
The MVA is strict about this. Show up missing anything on the list and the examiner will turn you away.
Personal documents:

You supply the vehicle. It has to be in safe working condition, with no check engine or dashboard warning lights on and at least half a tank of gas. If You Don’t Pass, When You Can Rebook
Failing doesn’t cost you anything and doesn’t cap your attempts. The retest wait depends on how many tries you’ve had:
- After a first failure: you can reschedule as soon as the next day, subject to availability.
- After a second or later failure: you must wait at least 7 days before retesting.
