How to Book Your Appointment
All scheduling runs through the DPS online portal at txdpsscheduler.com.1Texas Department of Public Safety. Driver License Services – Appointments The scheduler starts by asking whether you’re a new or existing Texas customer and what service you need. Choose the option for a new or renewal identification card. If your exact situation isn’t on the list, pick “Service Not Listed” to book a general appointment.
Enter your name and date of birth, and the system will display offices and available dates. Compare a few locations before you commit. An office 20 or 30 minutes farther from you can sometimes have openings days or weeks sooner than the one closest to home. Once you pick a date, choose a time slot and add an email or phone number for the confirmation. That confirmation carries a unique number and a link you can use later to reschedule or cancel.
When Nothing Is Available
If the scheduler shows no openings on the days you need, check back early in the morning. Most DPS offices release a limited number of same-day appointments throughout the day, bookable either online or at a self-service kiosk inside the office, and they go quickly.1Texas Department of Public Safety. Documents to Bring
Missing paperwork is the single most common reason people leave a DPS office without a card. You need documents in four categories, and photocopies are not accepted for the identity document. Bring originals or agency-certified copies.
Form DL-14A
Download and fill out Form DL-14A, the Texas Driver License or Identification Card Application, before you go. It’s a fillable PDF on the DPS website.3Texas Department of Public Safety. Any mismatch can get the application kicked back at the counter.
Proof of Identity and Lawful Status
You need one document that proves who you are and your citizenship or lawful presence. U.S. citizens typically use a valid U.S. passport, a certified birth certificate, or a certificate of naturalization. Two Proofs of Texas Residency

- A current deed, mortgage statement, or residential lease
- An electric, water, gas, internet, or cell phone bill dated within 180 days of the application
- A current Texas motor vehicle registration
- A valid homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy

Social Security Verification
Bring your original Social Security card if you have it. A W-2 or 1099 also works, and so does a preprinted paycheck or pay stub dated within 180 days of the application.4Texas Department of Public Safety. What Happens at the Appointment
Get there a few minutes early. Check in at the self-service kiosk using your confirmation number or the barcode on your phone. When your number is called, hand over Form DL-14A and your supporting documents. The technician verifies the paperwork against state records, takes your photograph, and captures your fingerprints.
You’ll also be offered the chance to register with the Donate Life Texas organ donor registry, which is voluntary and covers donation after death only.7Texas Department of Public Safety. After you pay, you’ll leave with a temporary paper receipt that works as ID for most purposes while your card is being made. The plastic card generally arrives by mail in two to three weeks. How Much It Costs
A new or renewal ID card costs $16 if you’re 59 or younger and $6 if you’re 60 or older. Both fees include a $1 administrative charge that’s waived for transactions completed by mail. The card is valid for six years from your birthday.10Texas Department of Public Safety. Driver License Fees
Disabled veterans can qualify for a fee-exempt ID card. Requirements generally include an honorable discharge, a service-connected disability rating of at least 60 percent with VA compensation, and no sex offender registration obligation.11Texas Department of Public Safety. Residents who need a photo ID solely for voting can get a free Election Identification Certificate at DPS offices during regular business hours. That’s separate from the standard ID card.
One Card at a Time
Texas doesn’t allow you to hold a driver license and an ID card at the same time. If you already have one and want to switch, you’ll surrender the existing card at the DPS office as part of your appointment.1Texas Department of Public Safety. Driver License Services – Appointments
When You Can Skip the Appointment
Renewals often don’t require an office visit at all. You can renew online if you renewed in person last time, your card expires within two years or expired less than two years ago, you’re a U.S. citizen, and your Social Security number is on file with DPS.12Texas.gov. If you happen to hold both a driver license and an ID card, you have to come in and surrender one before any online transaction is available to you. Learner licenses don’t qualify for online renewal either.
