To schedule a Texas driver license appointment, go to txdpsscheduler.com, choose your service type, pick a location, and lock in a date and time. Every in-person driver license and ID service at the Department of Public Safety runs through that portal. There are no general walk-ins, so the appointment comes first and the office visit comes second.
Check Whether You Actually Need to Come In
Many Texas drivers can skip the office entirely. You can renew online if you renewed in person last time, hold a Class C, M, or CM license (or a CDL without a hazardous materials endorsement), are under 79, and your license either expires within two years or has been expired for less than two years. You also need to be a U.S. citizen with a Social Security number already on file with DPS.1Department of Public Safety. Renew Your Texas DL, CDL, Motorcycle License or ID
If none of that applies, you’ll need an appointment. Services that require an in-person visit include:
- Original driver license, including surrendering an out-of-state license
- Renewal when you don’t qualify for the online option
- Duplicate or replacement for a lost, stolen, or damaged card
- State ID card (original, renewal, or replacement)
- Driving skills (road) test
- CDL applications, renewals, and medical certification updates
Pick the correct service when you book. A road test slot allocates a different time block and an examiner; a standard paperwork visit does not. Choose the wrong category and the office may not be able to finish your transaction that day.2Department of Public Safety. Driver License Services – Appointments
Booking on the DPS Scheduler
The whole process runs through txdpsscheduler.com. Enter your personal information, select the service you need, then choose from the available offices. The portal shows open dates and time slots per location, and availability varies. Offices in Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth fill up weeks out; smaller locations often have openings sooner.2Department of Public Safety. Driver License Services – Appointments
A review screen confirms the details before you submit. Once you do, the system generates a confirmation number and emails it to the address you provided. Save that number. You need it to check in at the office, and you need it again to reschedule or cancel.
Same-Day Options
A limited number of same-day appointments are released throughout the day at most offices. They surface in the same online scheduler and go fast.2Department of Public Safety. Driver License Services – Appointments
You can also walk into a DPS office and use a self-service kiosk in the lobby to check for same-day openings. If nothing is available that day, the kiosk lets you book a future date or a different location. It isn’t a true walk-in path, since you still leave with a scheduled slot, but it works if you don’t have internet access at home.
Documents to Bring
What you need depends on the service, but the core requirements for an original license are set by state law: your Social Security number (or proof you’re not eligible for one) and identity documents such as a birth certificate, passport, or immigration paperwork showing lawful presence.3State of Texas. Texas Transportation Code 521.142 – Application for Original License
You also need two documents proving Texas residency, and they can’t come from the same source. Accepted options include:
- A current deed, mortgage statement, or residential lease
- A utility bill (electric, water, gas, internet, or phone) dated within 180 days
- Bank, investment, or credit card statements dated within 180 days
- A preprinted paycheck or pay stub dated within 180 days
- A current vehicle insurance policy or registration
- A valid Texas voter registration card
- Government mail from a federal, state, county, or city agency dated within 180 days
If you can’t produce two documents from that list, Form DL-5 (Texas Residency Affidavit) with supporting paperwork is an option.4Department of Public Safety. What to Bring When Applying for a Texas Driver License or Identification Card The dated documents use a 180-day window, not the 90 days that some older references cite.
If you already hold a Texas credential, have the license or ID number handy so staff can link your record. Form DL-14A can be filled out ahead of time to speed the visit. Once DPS accepts your completed application, fees are nonrefundable.5Department of Public Safety. Texas Driver License or Identification Card Application
If You Want the REAL ID Gold Star
Federal enforcement of the REAL ID Act began May 7, 2025. A REAL ID-compliant Texas license carries a gold star in the upper-right corner and is expected for boarding domestic flights and accessing federal facilities, though TSA has said passengers without one won’t be turned away outright during the transition and may face additional screening instead. A Texas license without the star is still valid for driving and non-federal identification.6Texas.gov. Texas REAL ID
You’ll get the star automatically at your next renewal or by requesting a replacement card. If that’s why you’re booking, bring the full identity and residency document set above; REAL ID verification is more thorough than a basic renewal.
Extra Prep for a Road Test
Road test appointments are the most documentation-heavy visit you can book. On top of the standard identity and residency documents, you’ll need proof of vehicle insurance for each vehicle you own and an Impact Texas Drivers (ITD) certificate. ITD comes from a short online video course (separate teen and adult versions) and must be dated within 90 days of your skills test.7Department of Public Safety. Apply for a Texas Driver License
The vehicle itself must be currently registered and insured, with working turn signals front and rear, working brake lights, a horn, operational seatbelts, and a passenger door that opens. No temporary “IN TRANSIT” plates. Borrowing a car with a burned-out brake light or lapsed insurance will get your test canceled before it starts.
Prerequisites vary by age. Applicants under 18 must have held a learner permit for at least six months and completed an approved driver education course. Those 18 to 24 must complete a six-hour adult driver education course and be processed through DPS before testing. Applicants 25 and older skip the education requirement but still need a restricted license issued by DPS and the ITD certificate before the exam.
If you don’t pass, DPS holds your application at that office for 90 days. After 90 days or three failed attempts, you submit a brand-new application and pay the fee again.8Department of Public Safety. How to Prepare for a Drive Test
You don’t have to take the road test at a DPS office. Texas authorizes third-party providers (driving schools) to administer the Class C road exam. Pass there, then book a regular non-road-test DPS appointment to complete licensing. Wait times are often shorter because providers set their own schedules.9Department of Public Safety. Third Party Skills Testing Program
CDL Appointments
Commercial driver license services are appointment-only and carry extra requirements. The biggest is medical certification. You self-certify into one of four categories based on interstate or intrastate operation and whether your activities are excepted or non-excepted. Non-excepted interstate and non-excepted intrastate categories require a medical examiner’s certificate.10Department of Public Safety. Commercial Driver License (CDL) Medical Certification Requirement
As of April 10, 2026, Texas will no longer accept paper medical certificates. All certification results must be submitted electronically through the National Registry II system. If your CDL appointment is around that date, confirm with your medical examiner that they’ll submit electronically.
CDL renewals have a tighter window than standard licenses. You can renew up to one year before expiration, compared with two years for a Class C. A CDL with a hazardous materials endorsement can’t be renewed online and always requires an office visit.1Department of Public Safety. Renew Your Texas DL, CDL, Motorcycle License or ID

- Driver license (age 85+), new or renewal: $9

Licenses for adults ages 18 through 84 are issued for eight years.11Department of Public Safety. Driver License Fees
The Day of the Appointment
Arrive no earlier than 30 minutes before your scheduled time. DPS generally limits building entry to the customer only, with exceptions for ADA accommodations, small children, elderly individuals, and situations requiring a parent or legal guardian.2Department of Public Safety. Driver License Services – Appointments
DPS cancels appointments after 30 minutes of lateness, which is more forgiving than the 10 or 15 minutes cited in older guides. Don’t plan on using that buffer, though. Arriving late compresses processing time, and the office can ask you to reschedule if there isn’t enough time left to finish.
Rescheduling or Canceling
Log back into the scheduler with your confirmation number and email to view your reservation, pick a new date, or cancel outright. If you can’t make it, cancel rather than no-show. Missed appointments are a chronic problem and consistently failing to show can make it harder to book future visits.2Department of Public Safety. Driver License Services – Appointments
