To take the Iowa DOT permit test, book an appointment through the statewide online scheduler at iowadot.gov, which covers every Driver’s License Service Center and 79 participating county treasurer offices.1Iowa Department of Transportation. DOT Introduces New Statewide Scheduling System for DMV Services Applicants as young as 14 can test, and students under 18 have a second path: take the knowledge test at home or at a participating school through the Skip the Trip program, then make an in-person visit for the permit card itself.
Booking the Appointment Online
Open the Iowa DOT scheduling page and, under the Testing category, pick “Knowledge Test (Non-Commercial/Motorcycle).”2Iowa Department of Transportation. Schedule an Appointment Choose a location, then a date and time from the calendar for that office. Confirm your details on the summary screen and save the confirmation that comes back to you.
Bring the confirmation when you arrive. If nothing at your preferred office fits, try another service center or check back in a day or two, as new slots open regularly.
Skip the Trip: Testing at Home or at School
Iowans under 18 can take the knowledge test outside a DOT office through Skip the Trip. You still need an in-person appointment afterward for the vision screening, photo, and permit issuance, but you avoid using an office visit on the exam itself.3Iowa Department of Transportation. Online Permit Test (Skip the Trip)
At Home
Students within 30 days of their 14th birthday and younger than 18 can test at home. The school does not need to be enrolled in Skip the Trip for this path. A few conditions apply:
- The parent or guardian proctoring the test must hold a valid Iowa driver’s license.
- You need an internet-connected computer. Phones and tablets are not accepted.
- A parent or guardian submits the Application to Proctor Knowledge Exam. Processing runs 7 to 14 days.
- Once approved, you’ll get an email with a test link that expires in 72 hours. If it lapses, you reapply.
At a Participating School
Many Iowa schools are enrolled, and students at those schools can sit the test there. After passing, you receive an email with your results and then schedule the in-person DOT visit to finish up.3Iowa Department of Transportation. Online Permit Test (Skip the Trip)
What to Bring
Iowa requires proof of four things for an instruction permit: identity and date of birth, Social Security number, lawful status, and Iowa residency.4Legal Information Institute. Iowa Code 761-601.5 – Proofs Submitted With Application Showing up a document short usually means rescheduling, so check the list the night before.
- Identity and date of birth: a valid U.S. passport or passport card, or a certified birth certificate carrying the issuing authority’s stamp or raised seal.
- Social Security number: your Social Security card is the straightforward option. A W-2, a 1099 (SSA or non-SSA), or a pay stub showing your full SSN also works.5Iowa Legislature. Iowa Administrative Code 761-601.5 – Proofs Submitted With Application
- Iowa residency: two separate documents showing your name and current Iowa address, from a source other than yourself, each listing the issuer’s name and address. Utility bills, bank statements, and insurance documents are common.
Applicants under 18 also need the Parent/Guardian Written Consent form (Form 430018). A parent or guardian can sign in person at the office or complete the form in advance and send it with the applicant.6Iowa Department of Transportation. What the Test Looks Like
The knowledge test is 25 multiple-choice questions pulled from the Iowa Driver’s Manual, and you need 80% to pass, meaning 20 correct.7Iowa Department of Transportation. Iowa Driver’s License Practice Test Topics include traffic laws, road signs and signals, safe driving practices, sharing the road, and impaired driving rules.
The DOT posts a free online practice test that uses the same question pool as the actual exam. Running through it a few times is probably the single most useful thing you can do to prepare. The driver’s manual itself is downloadable in English and other languages.8Iowa Department of Transportation. Driver’s Manual
At the Service Center
Arrive a few minutes early and check in at the front desk or self-service kiosk. Staff verify your appointment and documents, then send you to a testing station. You’ll also complete a vision screening during the visit, and you must pass both it and the knowledge test to receive the permit.6Iowa Department of Transportation. Driving With Your New Permit
The permit is only half the story. Permit holders under 18 must have a qualifying supervising adult in the front passenger seat whenever they drive.11Iowa Legislature. Iowa Code 321.180B – Graduated Driver’s Licenses That adult must hold a valid license for the type of vehicle being driven and fit one of these categories:
- A parent, guardian, or custodian, with no age minimum beyond the valid license.
- An immediate family member at least 21 years old.
- A driver education instructor, including student teachers in an approved safety education program.
- Any other licensed adult at least 25 years old, with written permission from the permit holder’s parent, guardian, or custodian.
You cannot carry more passengers than there are seat belts.6Iowa Department of Transportation. Instruction Permit for Under Age 18 With a qualifying adult beside you, driving is permitted at any hour, including at night.
