How to Submit the Oklahoma DOC Visitor Application Online

To apply online to visit someone in an Oklahoma prison, use the Oklahoma DOC visitor application on the department’s visitation page at oklahoma.gov/doc/facilities/visitation.html. As of December 1, 2025, ODOC runs applications and scheduling through a centralized Visitation Unit, and the form is hosted in Smartsheet so it opens in your browser.¹ Approval can take up to 90 days, so start early.²

What to Have Ready Before You Open the Form

Pulling your documents together first prevents the two mistakes that cause most rejections: typos in ID numbers and missing uploads.

For the person you want to visit, you need their full legal name and their ODOC identification number. ODOC numbers are six or seven digits, depending on when the person entered the system.³ If you’re not sure of the number or the exact spelling, look them up on ODOC’s offender search page at oklahoma.gov/doc/offender-info.html.⁴

For yourself, the form asks for your Social Security Number, date of birth, current street address, and a photo of the front and back of a valid ID. Acceptable IDs include a state driver’s license, a state-issued identification card, a U.S. passport, a military ID, or a school ID.⁵ The new online system lets you upload the ID photo directly instead of mailing a copy.¹

You’ll also describe your relationship to the inmate. ODOC counts a spouse, natural or surrogate parents, grandparents, in-laws, children (including stepchildren and adopted children), grandchildren, siblings, and aunts or uncles as immediate family. Friends can apply too, with one important limit: a person listed as a friend cannot be on more than one inmate’s visitor list anywhere in the ODOC system.⁶

Submitting the Application

Go to oklahoma.gov/doc/facilities/visitation.html and open the visitor application link. Enter your personal details, the inmate’s name and ODOC number, and upload the photo of your ID. Before you submit, check the ODOC number and your Social Security Number carefully. A single wrong digit can push you to the back of the queue.

If you can’t use the online form, ODOC still accepts printed applications at its Oklahoma City headquarters.¹ Questions about the application go to the Visitation Unit at 405-768-3269 during weekday business hours.

The Background Check and How You’ll Know You’re Approved

Every applicant 18 or older goes through a background check before being added to an inmate’s approved list. Security staff review criminal history, active warrants, and any protective orders that would prohibit contact with the inmate. Approval can take up to 90 days.² The new centralized Visitation Unit was created partly to shorten that wait, but plan for the full window.

ODOC does not contact you directly with the decision. The inmate is notified, and they reach out to tell you the application went through.² Once you hear from them, you can start scheduling.

Who Gets Denied

The background review is substantive, not procedural. Several situations lead to denial:

Active warrants. Expect denial, and expect to be arrested if you show up at a facility.
Current supervision. If you’re on probation or parole, you generally cannot visit. Family members under ODOC supervision may be an exception, but both facility heads must approve it in writing.⁶
Former inmates. If you previously served time, you cannot visit any ODOC inmate for three years after completing all active sentences, incarcerated or supervised. After that waiting period, the facility head still has to approve your application.⁶
False or incomplete answers on the form.

If you’re denied, the notice usually gives a brief reason. ODOC’s published policies do not lay out a formal visitor appeal process, so the next step is to call the Visitation Unit at 405-768-3269 and ask whether the issue can be resolved or whether reapplying later is an option.

Rules Specific to Children

Children under 18 don’t fill out the application, but the adult bringing them has to qualify. If the child is the inmate’s natural or adopted child, any approved visitor can bring them. For any other child, the person accompanying them must be their parent or legal guardian, and you’ll need documentation such as a birth certificate or adoption papers to prove it. ODOC may also restrict a child’s visit if a court, the Department of Human Services, or another source indicates the visit isn’t in the child’s best interest.⁶ When a child turns 18, they must submit their own application and pass a background check.²

Scheduling Your First Visit

Approved visitors cannot walk in. Every visit has to be scheduled ahead of time, either by calling the Visitation Unit or by using the online scheduling request form on the visitation page. Requests for a given visiting period must be submitted by 1:00 p.m. the preceding Wednesday. After that cutoff, changes or additions require facility administration to grant an exception.²

Visiting hours run from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., but the weekly time you’ll actually get depends on the inmate’s security level:²

Maximum security: one to four hours per week, depending on classification level. Level 1 inmates receive only non-contact visits.
Medium security: one to six hours per week, with Level 1 restricted to non-contact.
Minimum security: one to eight hours per week, with Level 1 restricted to non-contact.
Community corrections: up to eight hours per week, or up to 16 hours at halfway houses.

Special visits and attorney visits are held on Mondays and Thursdays.²

A Note on Video Visits

The online visitor application is separate from video visitation. Video visits run through Securus Video Connect, which has its own one-time registration and identity verification. Inmates initiate the calls, and once facility staff approve your Securus account, future calls are automatically approved as long as the account stays in good standing. You’ll need a computer or smartphone with a working webcam, microphone, and reliable internet. Session availability, length, and cost are set by the individual facility, so confirm the specifics with the Visitation Unit or the inmate before you rely on video as your main way to connect.
