You can submit your SAR 7 online through BenefitsCal by logging in at BenefitsCal.com, linking your CalFresh or CalWORKs case, completing the periodic report on your dashboard, uploading your pay stubs, and signing electronically. The form is due by the 5th of your submit month, and the county still treats it as timely if it arrives by the 11th.1California Department of Social Services. SAR 7 Eligibility Status Report
Know Your Deadline Before You File
Your submit month is the sixth month of your six-month reporting period. The form itself covers the fifth month, called the data month. Because the form reports on income already earned, you cannot sign it until the first day of the submit month at the earliest.2California Legislative Information. California Welfare and Institutions Code 11265.1
If your reporting period runs January through June, May is your data month and June is your submit month. The form is due June 5. It still counts as on time if the county receives it by June 11.1California Department of Social Services. SAR 7 Eligibility Status Report
Set Up BenefitsCal and Link Your Case
BenefitsCal is California’s statewide portal for managing public assistance, used by every county.3BenefitsCal. BenefitsCal – Together, We Benefit If you already have an account, log in. If not, create one at BenefitsCal.com using a working email address.
Having an account is not enough on its own. You have to link your existing benefits case before the SAR 7 will appear on your dashboard. From the dashboard, scroll to “Things to do” and select “Link a case.” You will need your seven-digit case number, which is printed on your EBT card and on letters from your county. After you submit the linking request, give the system a few hours, and up to the next business day, to connect your case.
What to Have Ready
Before you open the report, gather:
- Pay stubs covering the data month for everyone in the household who worked
- Documentation of any other income received that month (Social Security, disability, child support, unemployment, lottery winnings)
- Records of any household changes since your last report (someone moved in or out, a birth, a move to a new address)
- Records of property changes (a car sold, an account opened or closed)
- For CalWORKs, any change in marital or domestic partnership status, or a pregnancy
You will photograph or scan these to upload with the form.1California Department of Social Services. SAR 7 Eligibility Status Report
Filing the Report Step by Step
Once your case is linked, the online process is straightforward:
- Open the report. On your dashboard, under “Things to do,” click “Start your periodic report.”
- Answer each section. The form asks yes-or-no questions about household composition, income, expenses, property, and family status. Answering yes expands the section for details. Enter exact dollar amounts and dates that match your pay stubs.
- Upload verification. Use the built-in upload tool to attach photos or scans of pay stubs and any other documents the form requests.
- Sign electronically. You sign under penalty of perjury, certifying that everything you reported is true. An electronic signature carries the same legal weight as a handwritten one under California law.2California Legislative Information. California Welfare and Institutions Code 11265.14California Legislative Information. California Civil Code 1633.7
- Save your confirmation. After you submit, a confirmation screen appears. Download it or take a screenshot right away. This is your proof of timely filing if anything is disputed later.
Check BenefitsCal in the days after you submit. If a document is missing or a figure needs clarification, the county will post a request under “Things to do,” and you can upload the additional item there.
If You Miss the Deadline
If a complete report is not in by the 11th, the county sends notice that your benefits will end at the end of the month. You can still avoid a gap: benefits are restored if a complete report reaches the county by the end of the first working day of the following month.2California Legislative Information. California Welfare and Institutions Code 11265.1
If your CalFresh benefits are discontinued because you did not file, you have a longer window before you have to start over. Under a statewide waiver, your county can restore CalFresh without a new application or interview if you submit a complete SAR 7 with the required verification within 30 days of the discontinuance date.5LACOUNTY.GOV DPSS. CalFresh Restoration of Eligibility and Benefits Benefits for the month of discontinuance come through prorated rather than in full. Miss the 30-day window and you have to reapply from scratch, including a new application and an eligibility interview.
Income Changes Between SAR 7 Filings
The SAR 7 is a semi-annual snapshot, but there is one thing you cannot save for the next form. If your household’s total gross monthly income rises above 130 percent of the federal poverty level for your household size at any point during the six-month period, you must report it to the county mid-period. This is the Income Reporting Threshold, or IRT.6California Department of Social Services. All County Letter 15-42
For federal fiscal year 2026 (October 2025 through September 2026), the monthly IRT for a one-person household is $1,696. The threshold rises with household size. Households certified for CalFresh with income between 131 and 200 percent of the poverty level are not subject to the IRT and do not need to report income changes between reports. Your specific threshold is listed on your most recent Notice of Action.
Other mid-period changes, like someone moving in or out, generally can wait for the next SAR 7, though reporting them sooner can prevent overpayments you would later have to repay.
If You Cannot Use the Online Portal
You are not required to file online. The SAR 7 can also be submitted by mail, by fax, or in person at your county social services office. You can download a blank form from the California Department of Social Services and complete it by hand. Mailing addresses and fax numbers vary by county, so call your local office to confirm before sending. County staff can also take your information over the phone, though verification documents may still need to come in separately.
After You Submit
An eligibility worker reviews your report, your income figures, and your uploaded documents. The review can take several weeks. If anything is missing, the county sends a Request for Information, which will appear in your BenefitsCal account and by mail.
Once the review is complete, you receive a Notice of Action stating whether your benefits will continue at the same level, go up, go down, or end. Keep your submission confirmation, copies of what you uploaded, and any letters from the county together in one place. If you disagree with the decision, the Notice of Action explains how to request a hearing, and your records will matter if it comes to that.
