How to Submit Your Traffic School Certificate in California

In California, you almost never have to submit your traffic school certificate yourself. Since September 2012, every DMV-licensed traffic school has been required to transmit your completion electronically, so the school reports directly to the DMV and your court pulls the record from there.1Superior Court of California, County of San Mateo. Traffic School Your job is to finish the course before your deadline, hold onto the completion receipt the school gives you, and confirm afterward that the court and DMV both updated your record. The one situation where you do file the certificate yourself is a ticket issued on federal property.

How the Electronic Submission Works

After you pass the final exam, the traffic school transmits your completion data to the DMV’s secure Traffic Violator Course Completion database. Your court then retrieves that record from the DMV and closes out your case.2Superior Court of California, County of San Francisco. Once the court records the completion, the DMV applies a confidential status to the conviction under Vehicle Code 1808.7. The conviction stays visible to courts and law enforcement, but it’s hidden from insurance companies and the public version of your driving record, and no negligent-operator point is assessed.3California Legislative Information. Because the entire chain is electronic, your only action after finishing the course is to save the completion receipt the school issues. That receipt isn’t the official filing, but it’s your proof if something goes wrong on the court’s end. You don’t mail anything, upload anything, or visit the courthouse.

Federal Court Tickets Are the Exception

Tickets issued on federal property, such as military bases, national parks, and federal buildings, are handled by the U.S. District Court rather than a California Superior Court. Federal courts don’t accept electronic submissions from traffic schools, so you’re responsible for sending the proof of completion in yourself.4Central District of California. Online Traffic School Requests

For the Central District of California, you can mail a copy of the certificate or email a copy of the confirmation showing course completion. The mailing address is:

U.S. District Court, Attn: CVB Clerk

Riverside, CA 92501

One important difference from state court: if you received a federal citation, do not pay the amount due before requesting traffic school. Use the court’s online eligibility tool first, and if you can’t request it online, you’ll need to appear in court to make the request.5United States District Court Central District of California. Verifying the Court and DMV Received It

Electronic systems are reliable but not perfect. A glitch between the school, the DMV database, and the court can leave your case in limbo, so check both sides after you finish.

Court Case Status

Most California Superior Courts offer online case lookup tools where you can search by citation number or case number. These portals show whether the traffic school completion has been recorded and whether the case has been updated to reflect a confidential conviction. Each county runs its own system, so search for your county court’s website and look for a case access or traffic case search page.6California Courts. How to Look Up a Court Case

DMV Driving Record

The court side only tells you half the story. Confirm the point has been masked on your DMV record by requesting your driving record online through the DMV’s website for a $2 fee, or by mail for $5.7California DMV. Request Your Drivers Record Find the violation on the record. If traffic school was processed correctly, the conviction should appear as confidential and carry zero negligent-operator points.

Allow a few weeks for the full chain to complete. The school transmits to the DMV within a few business days, but the court still needs to retrieve and process the record, and the DMV then needs to apply the confidential status. If more than 30 days have passed since you completed the course and your record still shows a point, contact both the court and the traffic school to find out where the process stalled.

If Your Deadline Is Close or Already Past

Courts typically give you 90 days from the date you elect traffic school to complete the course.8Superior Court of California, County of San Diego. Traffic School Some courts phrase this as three months from your payment date, which works out roughly the same.2Superior Court of California, County of San Francisco. Traffic School Your court notice should state your specific due date.

If you’re not going to finish in time, some courts allow a one-time extension. Los Angeles County, for example, offers a 60-day extension through the court’s online portal.9Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles. How Do I Request a Traffic School Extension Not every court offers this, and if you’re not eligible, the option simply won’t appear. Contact the court before the deadline passes rather than after.

Missing the deadline is expensive. Once your due date passes, the court closes your case, reports the conviction to the DMV as a point on your record, and forfeits your bail payment. The traffic school option is gone. The court may add a civil assessment of up to $100 for failing to comply with a court order.10California Legislative Information. California Penal Code PEN 1214.1 If you also failed to appear for a required hearing, that failure can be charged as a separate misdemeanor under Vehicle Code 40508.11California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code VEH 40508 The DMV may place a hold on your license until the case is resolved.

If you’ve already missed the deadline, contact the court and ask to have your case reopened. Courts have discretion, and the further past your deadline you are, the harder the conversation gets.

A Note for Commercial License Holders

If you hold a class A, class B, or commercial class C license and got a ticket in a noncommercial vehicle, the electronic submission works the same way, but the outcome on your record is different. The conviction will not be masked, so insurance companies and employers can still see it. No negligent-operator point is assessed, and the conviction remains visible for federal reporting purposes under Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations.12California Legislative Information.
