How to Take the Permit Test Online in California

You can take the California permit test online from home using a laptop or desktop with a webcam, after submitting the eDL 44 application and paying the $46 fee. The DMV proctors the exam remotely on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., and a passing score is good for 12 months. You still have to visit a DMV field office afterward for identity verification, a vision screening, a photo, and a thumbprint before the permit is issued.¹

Who Qualifies for the At-Home Test

The DMV opened the remote knowledge exam to four groups: minors between 15½ and 18 applying for a provisional instruction permit, adults 18 or older applying for a first California Class C license, people who recently moved to California and need a license here, and drivers whose renewal triggers a knowledge test. All four take the same proctored online test.²

If you’re under 18, a parent or guardian has to consent to the DMV interacting with you online and recording the session before you can begin.²

What to Do Before the Test

Start with the online driver’s license application, form eDL 44, on the DMV website. The form asks for your full legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, and California residence address. Every field has to match government records. A typo in your Social Security number or a name that doesn’t match your birth certificate will hold up the whole process.¹³

The fee for an original Class C license is $46 and is nonrefundable. That one payment covers the knowledge test, the permit, and up to three test attempts. Your application stays valid for 12 months from the date you pay, so the knowledge test, office visit, and (for minors) behind-the-wheel test all have to happen inside that window or you start over and pay again.⁴⁵

Minors have an added prerequisite: completing a driver education program before applying. Keep the certificate of completion for the office visit.⁶

Computer, Webcam, and Testing Hours

The online knowledge test runs only on a desktop or laptop with a built-in or external webcam and a reliable internet connection. Tablets and smartphones will not work for this test.²

Testing is available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., excluding state holidays. You can’t start or finish a session outside those hours, so give yourself enough runway before the 4 p.m. cutoff.⁷

Taking the Test

Once your eDL 44 and payment are processed, you’ll get an email with a link to the testing platform. The session opens with identity verification. You take a photo through your webcam and agree to be monitored throughout the exam. The proctoring software watches whether you stay in frame and flags signals of outside help, including looking off-screen repeatedly, another person entering the frame, or switching browser tabs.⁷

The questions are multiple choice, drawn from the California Driver Handbook. Applicants under 18 answer 46 questions; applicants 18 and older answer 36. You need 80% to pass.⁸ The test is available in 35 languages, and you select yours before you start. Results appear right after you submit your final answer.⁷

If You Don’t Pass

You get three attempts on a single application. Applicants under 18 must wait at least seven days before retaking (not counting the day of the failed attempt). Adults can retake sooner.⁹

Fail all three and the application is closed. You’ll submit a new eDL 44 and pay another $46 to get a fresh set of three tries.⁴

The DMV Office Visit You Still Have to Make

Passing the online test does not put a permit in your hand. You still need to go to a DMV field office, where staff verify your identity, screen your vision, take your photo, and collect a thumbprint. Only after that visit will the state issue the instruction permit.¹

Bring original documents, not photocopies. For a REAL ID-compliant permit or license you’ll need one proof of identity (a U.S. passport, certified birth certificate, permanent resident card, or other qualifying document showing your full legal name and date of birth), two different proofs of California residency showing your name and California address (a utility bill and a bank statement, for example, or an insurance document and a tax return), and, if your current name doesn’t match your identity document, legal record of each name change such as a marriage certificate or court order.¹⁰

Minors bring their driver education certificate too, and a parent or guardian must be present to sign the application and accept financial responsibility.¹¹

What the Permit Lets Minors Do Next

A provisional instruction permit has to be held for at least six months before a minor can take the behind-the-wheel driving test. If the 12-month application window runs out before those six months are up, you’ll reapply, though time already spent holding the permit still counts.⁸

During that period, a minor must log at least 50 hours of supervised practice driving with a California-licensed driver who is 25 or older, and 10 of those hours have to be at night. The permit does not allow solo driving; a supervising driver must be in the passenger seat at all times.¹¹
