How to Take the Tennessee Permit Test Online

If you’re between 15 and 17, you can take the Tennessee permit test online from home on a computer, laptop, or tablet while a parent or legal guardian supervises through the Tennessee Proctor ID App. The exam has 30 multiple-choice questions and you need 80% to pass. Passing online doesn’t hand you a permit, though. You still have to visit a Driver Services Center for a vision screening, your photo, and the $10.50 fee before you can drive.

Who Qualifies for the At-Home Test

The online option is only for applicants who are at least 15 and no older than 17. Anyone 18 or over takes the knowledge test in person.1State of Tennessee, Safety & Homeland Security. Driver License Knowledge Permit Test Online

You’ll also need to have your paperwork ready. Tennessee requires proof of U.S. citizenship or legal presence (a birth certificate, passport, or other approved document), your Social Security number, and two documents showing your Tennessee residency, such as a utility bill, bank statement, or rental agreement.

Because you’re under 18, you also need to show school enrollment. A current high school diploma or GED works if you’ve already graduated. Otherwise, your school completes the Certification of Compulsory School Attendance form (SF-1010), which is valid for 30 days during the school year, or dated within the last 30 days of the spring semester if you’re testing over the summer. A parent, stepparent at the same address, or legal guardian also has to sign the Minor/Teenage Affidavit accepting financial responsibility for you.2TN.gov. One thing to check before you plan a test day: your proctor must have a record on file with the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security, because the app cross-checks their identity against state records. If the parent or guardian you had in mind doesn’t have a Tennessee driver record, you’ll need a different proctor who does.1State of Tennessee, Safety & Homeland Security. Devices and the Proctor App

You and your proctor each need a separate device. The proctor uses a phone or tablet running the Tennessee Proctor ID App. You take the actual test on a computer, laptop, or tablet. Cell phones can’t be used for the test itself.1State of Tennessee, Safety & Homeland Security. Driver License Knowledge Permit Test Online

The testing device needs the latest version of Chrome, Edge, Safari, or Firefox. For the proctor’s phone, iPhone users need at least an iPhone 6 running iOS 13.1 or newer, and Android users should check the current requirements on the Google Play listing.1State of Tennessee, Safety & Homeland Security. Have your proctor download the app a day or two ahead. They search “Tennessee Proctor ID” in the App Store or Google Play and complete the registration, which verifies their identity against their Department of Safety and Homeland Security record. That verification is not something you want to be doing five minutes before the test.3TN.gov. Online Knowledge Test Instructions

What’s on the Test and How to Study

Questions come from the Tennessee Comprehensive Driver License Manual, a free PDF from the Department of Safety and Homeland Security. Four topics each make up about 25% of the exam: traffic signs and signals, safe driving principles, rules of the road, and drugs and alcohol.4TN.gov. Tennessee Comprehensive Driver License Manual

You need at least 24 of the 30 questions right to pass.1State of Tennessee, Safety & Homeland Security. Taking the Test Step by Step

Once the app is set up and your testing device is ready:

  • On your computer, laptop, or tablet, go to the IDEMIA web test portal at tn-wt.iddls.com/portal/TN and review the testing rules under the Testing Menu.
  • Click “Verify Identity and Take Test.” A QR code appears. Your proctor scans it with the Proctor ID App.
  • Your proctor selects your preferred language and enters your demographic information. Check it and confirm.
  • Once your identity is verified, the 30-question exam starts.3TN.gov. Online Knowledge Test Instructions

If you finish within 30 minutes, you’re done. If the test runs longer than 30 minutes, your proctor must scan the QR code again for a mid-test re-authentication. Skipping that step triggers an automatic failure.1State of Tennessee, Safety & Homeland Security. Driver License Knowledge Permit Test Online

What Will Automatically Fail You

A handful of things end your test on the spot:

  • Leaving the test screen. Switching tabs, opening another window, or navigating away from the test page in any way is an immediate fail.
  • Having any electronic devices, recording equipment, notes, or written reference material near you.
  • Asking anyone, including your proctor, for help with a question.
  • A network or power outage lasting more than 60 minutes. For shorter outages, your proctor can resume the session by scanning the QR code again.1State of Tennessee, Safety & Homeland Security. Driver License Knowledge Permit Test Online

Your proctor’s job is strictly to verify identity, handle QR scans, and keep the room clean. They can’t coach you through questions.

If You Don’t Pass

You have to wait at least 24 hours to retake it, and you can only attempt the online version twice. After two failed online attempts, your next try has to be in person at a Driver Services Center.1State of Tennessee, Safety & Homeland Security. Driver License Knowledge Permit Test Online

The Department of Safety and Homeland Security also reserves the right to require you to retake the knowledge test at a Driver Services Center even after you pass the online version. It’s an integrity safeguard rather than a routine step, but worth knowing.1State of Tennessee, Safety & Homeland Security. Driver License Knowledge Permit Test Online

Finishing at the Driver Services Center

Passing online doesn’t give you a permit. You still have to show up in person at a Driver Services Center with the original or certified copies of every document from the eligibility list, even if you uploaded them earlier. The center verifies them there.6TN.gov. Adult First-Time Drivers

You’ll take a vision screening. Tennessee requires at least 20/40 in either eye. If you don’t meet that, you receive a form to take to a licensed optometrist or ophthalmologist and come back once your vision is corrected.7State of Tennessee Help Center. Some centers let you book an appointment online, though not every location participates.
