How to Tell If You Have a REAL ID in Massachusetts

To tell if you have a REAL ID in Massachusetts, look at the top right corner of your driver’s license or Mass ID. A REAL ID-compliant card has a small star printed there. If your card has no star, it’s a standard credential.¹ That single marking is the difference between a card TSA will accept at the airport and one it won’t, now that federal enforcement began on May 7, 2025.²

Federal regulations require every state-issued license or ID to carry a security marking that reflects its compliance level, and Massachusetts uses a star for that purpose.³ The star sits in the top right corner of the card. It’s the same on a driver’s license and on a Mass ID.

A standard Massachusetts license or Mass ID does not have the star.¹ There is no other visual cue to hunt for. Star present, REAL ID. Star absent, standard.

Checking Your Status Online Through myRMV

If your card isn’t in front of you, or you want a second confirmation, the Registry of Motor Vehicles lets you check through its myRMV portal.⁴ To log in you need your license or ID number, your date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security number. The RMV uses multi-factor authentication, so you may also need to verify through an email address, phone number, or authentication app tied to your account.⁵

Once you’re in, look for the field labeled “ID Type” on your profile summary. It will say either REAL or Standard.

Signs You Probably Have a Standard Card

You can often guess your status before checking. The RMV only issues a REAL ID after you present original identity documents in person. If you renewed your license entirely online and never brought paperwork to a service center or AAA branch, your card is almost certainly standard. An online renewal alone cannot produce a REAL ID.

Similarly, if you’ve held the same card for years and were never asked for a passport or birth certificate, Social Security proof, and two residency documents, the RMV had no way to issue you a REAL ID.

What Each Type of Card Lets You Do

Since May 7, 2025, a standard Massachusetts license is no longer accepted at TSA airport checkpoints for domestic flights.² The same restriction applies to entering most federal buildings and nuclear power plants.⁶

A standard card still works for plenty of things. You do not need a REAL ID to:⁷

Enter federal facilities that do not require ID for general access
Apply for or receive federal benefits such as Social Security or Veterans benefits
Vote or register to vote
Enter a police station or request law enforcement assistance
Access health or life-preserving services

A standard license is also fully valid for driving anywhere in the Commonwealth and for any non-federal identification purpose. And if you already carry a valid U.S. passport, you don’t need to upgrade at all for air travel; TSA accepts a passport in place of a REAL ID.⁸

Massachusetts does not currently offer an Enhanced Driver’s License. Your two options are a standard card or a REAL ID.¹

Upgrading a Standard Card to a REAL ID

If you checked and you have a standard card, you can upgrade at any RMV Service Center or at a participating AAA branch if you’re a member. The RMV accepts both scheduled appointments and walk-ins for REAL ID transactions.¹

You must bring original documents (not photocopies, not laminated) in three categories:¹

One document proving lawful presence and date of birth: a valid U.S. passport, a certified U.S. birth certificate, or a permanent resident card issued by DHS or USCIS are the common options.⁹
One document proving your Social Security number: a Social Security card (not laminated), a W-2, an SSA-1099, a non-SSA-1099, or a pay stub displaying your full nine-digit number.⁹
Two documents proving Massachusetts residency, showing your residential address rather than a P.O. Box. Common choices include a utility bill, bank statement, cell phone bill, credit card statement, or current lease or mortgage. Most bills and statements must be dated within 60 days; tax documents must be for the current year.¹⁰

A single document can only count toward one category. A W-2 showing both your Social Security number and your Massachusetts address covers one requirement, not two at once.⁹

The fee depends on your timing:¹

Upgrade outside your renewal cycle: $25
Upgrade at renewal (Class D or motorcycle): $50
Upgrade at renewal (commercial license, Class A/B/C): $75

If you have travel booked, plan around delivery time. The temporary paper license you receive while waiting for your permanent card is not accepted at TSA checkpoints, even when the underlying application is for a REAL ID.⁸ Make sure the physical card arrives before you fly, or bring a passport instead.
