Illinois doesn’t issue a tracking number for a Link card in the mail, but there are two reliable ways to track an Illinois EBT card on its way to you: call the Illinois Link Help Line at 1-800-678-LINK (5465) to confirm the mailing date, and sign up for free USPS Informed Delivery to see a scanned image of the envelope before it reaches your mailbox. After the Illinois Department of Human Services approves your application, the card should arrive within about seven days.1Illinois Department of Human Services. Illinois Link Program If you qualify for expedited benefits, you can skip the mail entirely and pick the card up at your local Family Community Resource Center.
How Long the Card Takes to Arrive
IDHS tells approved applicants to allow seven days for mail delivery. If nothing has shown up after ten days, contact your caseworker.1Illinois Department of Human Services. Illinois Link Program Those are calendar days, and weekends or federal holidays can push things back a little.
Federal rules set the outside limit. The state must make benefits usable within 30 calendar days of your application date, and within 7 calendar days if you’re approved for expedited service.2eCFR. 7 CFR 274.2 – Providing Benefits to Participants The card and PIN both need to reach you before those deadlines.
One detail that trips people up: Link cards are mailed in envelopes marked “Do Not Forward — Return to Sender.”3Illinois Department of Human Services. MR 08.27 – Undeliverable Illinois Link Cards Are Now Mailed If you’ve moved recently and haven’t updated your address with IDHS, the post office will send the card back instead of forwarding it. Confirm the address on file with your local office before the card ships.
Watch for It With USPS Informed Delivery
The closest thing to real-time tracking is USPS Informed Delivery, a free service that emails you scanned images of mail headed to your address. The Link card travels as a standard first-class letter, so it appears in the daily preview the same as any other envelope. Sign up at usps.com/informeddelivery with your home address and email. Most mornings you’ll get a notification once the mail has been scanned at the local processing facility, usually a day or two before it lands.
The scan won’t say “Link card” on it, but the return address and envelope style make it easy to spot. If a week has gone by and Informed Delivery still hasn’t shown anything from IDHS, that’s your cue to call the help line.
Confirm the Mailing Date by Phone
The Illinois Link Help Line at 1-800-678-LINK (5465) runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The automated system will ask for your nine-digit Social Security number and date of birth, then let you choose an option for card status or replacement inquiries. If the card has already been mailed, the system tells you the date it went out.4Illinois Department of Human Services. Manage My Illinois Link Account
If you’ve had a Link card before and still have the number, enter it to speed up the lookup. IDHS stores card numbers as either 16 or 19 digits.4Illinois Department of Human Services. The ebtEDGE portal and app at ebtedge.com are the state-endorsed tools for managing an active account, but they aren’t much help for a first card you haven’t received yet. For that, the phone line is the reliable option.4Illinois Department of Human Services. Manage My Illinois Link Account
Skip the Mail With Expedited Pickup
If you qualify for expedited SNAP benefits, you may not have to wait on the mail at all. Illinois gives expedited-service applicants the option of picking up a Link card in person at their nearest Family Community Resource Center.6Illinois.gov. Illinois Application for Benefits Eligibility – Apply Without Account Whats Next Guide Expedited service generally applies to households with very low income or almost no resources, and the state has to make benefits available within seven calendar days of application.2eCFR. 7 CFR 274.2 – Providing Benefits to Participants If you think you qualify, ask your caseworker about it when you apply.
What to Do If the Card Doesn’t Arrive
Once ten days have passed, start with the address. Apartment numbers, zip code typos, and old addresses are the most common reasons a card goes missing, and the post office will not forward it to a new address.3Illinois Department of Human Services. MR 08.27 – Undeliverable Illinois Link Cards Are Now Mailed
If the address is right, report the card as not received. You can call 1-800-678-LINK (5465) or use the Illinois Link Card website.5Illinois Department of Human Services. Report or Replace Lost/Damaged Link Card Either method disables the missing card so nobody else can spend your benefits and triggers a replacement. The replacement resets the delivery clock, so expect another seven days or so for it to arrive.1Illinois Department of Human Services. Illinois Link Program
Report it as soon as the delivery window passes. Waiting leaves a gap where someone who intercepts the envelope could drain your benefits before you ever hold the card.
Don’t Forget the PIN Comes Separately
The card won’t work until you set a Personal Identification Number, and federal rules require the PIN to be mailed separately from the card, at least one business day apart. You can also pick your own PIN rather than wait for an assigned one.2eCFR. 7 CFR 274.2 – Providing Benefits to Participants To set or change it, call 1-800-678-LINK or use the ebtEDGE site or app. IDHS recommends changing your PIN regularly, ideally before your monthly benefit issuance date, and never sharing it. If someone else uses your card with your PIN, IDHS generally cannot replace the lost benefits.4Illinois Department of Human Services. Manage My Illinois Link Account
