Texas gives you 30 days after a move to change the address on your driver license, and you can do it online through the TxT portal, by mail with Form DL-64, or in person at a Department of Public Safety office. The change is treated as a replacement card, so you’ll pay a small fee and receive a new license in the mail within a few weeks. This covers how to change the address on a Texas driver’s license through each of the three methods, what it costs, and what the deadline actually requires.
Change It Online Through TxT
The fastest route is txt.texas.gov. Sign in or create a Texas by Texas account, pull up your driver license record, enter your new residential address (and a separate mailing address if you use one), confirm the details, and pay the replacement fee by credit card. The confirmation page you print at the end serves as your temporary license until the new card shows up.
Online service is limited to drivers who meet all three of these conditions:1Texas.gov. Online Services Eligibility for Texas Driver License and ID Cards
- Your license is not expired, suspended, revoked, or disqualified. If it’s expired, you can change the address only if you renew at the same time.
- Your Social Security number is already on file with DPS.
- You are a U.S. citizen.
Change It by Mail With Form DL-64
If you’d rather not go online, download Form DL-64 from the DPS website. The form asks for your full legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, current driver license number, and both your old and new addresses.2Texas Department of Public Safety. DL-64 Application for Change of Address
The eligibility rules match the online option: valid license, SSN on file, U.S. citizen. You also need to be at least 18 and cannot hold a provisional or learner license.3Department of Public Safety. How to Change Information on Your Driver License or ID Card Send the completed form with a check or money order to the DPS address printed at the top of the form. Mailed transactions skip the $1 administrative fee, so the total by mail is $10 instead of $11.4Department of Public Safety. Driver License Fees
Living out of state temporarily but still holding a Texas license? Mail-in works for you too. Commercial driver license holders should note that the residence address on the form must be a Texas address.5Department of Public Safety. Renew or Replacing Your DL or ID While You Are Out-of-State
Change It in Person at a DPS Office
Anyone who doesn’t qualify for the online or mail-in options must visit a DPS driver license office. That includes drivers whose license has expired (and who don’t want to renew at the same time), non-citizens, and anyone whose SSN isn’t on file.
Book an appointment through the DPS online scheduling system. Some offices accept walk-ins, but an appointment saves a long wait. Bring your current license and two documents proving your new Texas residential address. Both must show your name and the new address, and at least one must show you’ve lived there for at least 30 days.6Department of Public Safety. Texas Residency Requirement for Driver Licenses and ID Cards
Documents that satisfy the residency requirement include:
- A current lease, deed, mortgage statement, or homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy
- Utility bills for electric, water, gas, internet, cable, or cell phone service dated within 180 days
- Bank, credit card, or investment account statements dated within 180 days
- Mail from a federal, state, county, or city agency dated within 180 days
- A W-2, 1099, or 1098 from the most recent tax year
- A valid Texas voter registration card, vehicle registration, or license to carry
Two documents from the same provider generally don’t count. The exception is a local government or utility that offers multiple residential services and bills them separately. If you can’t produce two qualifying documents, ask about the Texas Residency Affidavit (Form DL-5).
What the Address Change Costs
DPS treats an address change as a replacement card. The fee is $11, which includes a $1 administrative charge. That $1 is waived on mailed transactions, so mail-in costs $10.4Department of Public Safety. Driver License Fees The cost is the same for a standard driver license, a commercial driver license, or an ID card. Changing your address does not reset your expiration date; the new card carries forward the original expiration.
Temporary Permit and When Your Card Arrives
Whichever method you use, you’ll receive a temporary permit that acts as a valid license for 60 days. Keep it with you while driving until the permanent card arrives, which typically takes two to four weeks.
If four weeks pass with no card, call DPS. A typo in the mailing address is the usual reason cards come back as undeliverable, and DPS can confirm what’s on file and reissue if needed.
Vehicle Registration Is a Separate Update
Changing your driver license address does not update your vehicle registration or title records. Those live with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, and you have to update them separately.7Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Change of Address
Two records may need attention. The address where your registration renewal notice is mailed can be changed online at the TxDMV site using your license plate number and the last four digits of your VIN; the update posts within two business days. The owner address on the title and the vehicle location cannot be changed online. For those, download Form VTR-146, complete it, and mail it to the TxDMV address on the form.8Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Change of Address for Texas Motor Vehicle Form VTR-146 Skipping this step sends your renewal notice to your old address, which is an easy way to let registration lapse.
Voter Registration Is Also Separate
Your voter registration doesn’t update automatically either. Changing your address with DPS does not notify the Secretary of State, and the voter registration portal specifically warns that it does not change your driver license.9Texas.gov. Official Texas Voter Registration Name and Address Change You update voter records through the Secretary of State’s online portal using your driver license or ID number, Social Security number, and Voter Unique Identifier (VUID) from your voter registration card.
The 30-Day Deadline and What Happens If You Miss It
Texas Transportation Code Section 521.054 gives you 30 days from the effective date of your move to notify DPS of both your old and new addresses and apply for a replacement card.10Texas Public Law. Texas Code Transportation 521.054 – Notice of Change of Address or Name The clock starts on the move date, not the day you finish unpacking.
Missing the deadline is a citable traffic offense. It rarely surfaces unless you’re pulled over with an outdated address on your card, but a traffic stop is a bad time to find out. The cleanest approach is to handle the driver license, vehicle registration, and voter registration in one sitting right after you move. The online options for all three add up to less than 20 minutes.
