How to Verify a CNA License in California Online

To verify a CNA license in California online, go to the CDPH Licensing and Certification Verification page at cvl.cdph.ca.gov, choose “Certified Nurse Assistant” from the Certificate/License Type dropdown, and search by certificate number or by last and first name.1State of California, Department of Public Health. Running the Search

Certificate number gives the cleanest match. CDPH recommends it because name searches can pull back a long list, and a small spelling difference can hide the record you want.1State of California, Department of Public Health. L and C Certification Verification Search Page

If you only have a name, enter the last name and first name. There is also a “Last Name Starting With” option, useful when you know the surname but are unsure of the first name or its spelling. Expect more results to sift through. Click “Search” and the certification details appear.

What the Status Means

Only active certifications and certifications with a finding of denial, revocation, or suspension appear on the verification page. Expired certificates do not show up at all.3California Department of Public Health. Certified Nurse Assistant

  • Active. The certification is current and the person is authorized to work as a CNA in California.
  • Denied. The application was rejected. The person is not authorized to practice.
  • Suspended. The certification has been temporarily removed, usually after a disciplinary finding. The person cannot work as a CNA until the suspension is lifted.
  • Revoked. The certification has been permanently taken away for a serious violation. The person cannot practice.
  • No results. The certificate may have expired, the name may be misspelled, or the person may never have been certified in California.

The gap between “no results” and a disciplinary status is the part that trips people up. A blank result usually just means the certificate lapsed or was never issued, but the page itself does not distinguish the two. If you need to know which, call CDPH.

Abuse, Neglect, and Misappropriation Findings

Federal law requires every state nurse aide registry to record any substantiated finding of abuse, neglect, or misappropriation of resident property. Entries must be made within 10 working days and stay on the registry permanently, unless the finding was made in error, the aide was found not guilty in court, or the state learns the individual has died.4eCFR. 42 CFR 483.156 – Registry of Nurse Aides

If a registry entry carries one of these findings, it must also include any statement the nurse aide submitted disputing it. The state is required to disclose the full details of the investigation and outcome to anyone who asks. Employers checking the registry before hiring should treat that disclosure as part of the verification, not an add-on.

When the Certificate Does Not Appear

A blank result is not automatically a red flag. Common explanations:

  • Typo. Recheck spelling, especially hyphenated or compound surnames, and try “Last Name Starting With” if an exact match fails.
  • Expired certification. Expired certificates do not appear on the verification page at all. There is no “expired” label; the record simply is not there.   • Recent name change. If a CNA has not yet sent CDPH legal documentation of a marriage, divorce, or court-ordered name change, the registry may still list the old name.
  • New certification still processing. There can be a lag between passing the competency exam and appearing on the registry. Ask for proof of exam completion in the interim.

A Note on Out-of-State CNAs

A CNA who trained in another state and has applied for California certification through reciprocity will not show up in the California registry until CDPH processes and approves the application.3California Department of Public Health.
